Feel the same way!!!! And with post #173. It has been two months!!! Is the felon with weapon charge still in jail? This poor family (the father!) deserves answers!! moo
There needs to be justice for this baby. I can't imagine why there hasn't been an arrest yet.

Maybe it was "leaked"?

Star News is out of Fayetteville and they are very good about filing FOIAs quickly to try to get info before someone in charge stops it. They have a great legal team backing them and they are not local to Robeson County, so they DGA*.... Unlike the Robesonian. Still, most of the time, they file for something, and it just so happens that a judge decides THAT DAY to go ahead and seal all info.

We did a story on Paitin in one of our episodes of our podcast, but we decided not to include images or links to news stories on our website because the father's side of her family publicly requested such. Otherwise we would have blasted links and images out there. It's so frustrating to see how these counties down in southeastern NC operate. They NEVER release information at ALL.

If you look back through cold cases from the area you will find a trend. Never a cause of death released, autopsies get delayed and then when completed it's all sealed. Then when LE is asked for an update on their investigation they have one thing to say: "We need the public's help. Give us leads."

Well, when people give them leads, they pointedly ignore them. I'm only talking about this area, not in general... But why do they ignore them? It could be several reasons, including the following: 1. *Everybody* down there is related. Chances are, people implicated by "public help" will be family members, neighbors, etc with LEOs. Even the SBI down there in that office has been a part of these ongoing problems. 2. It's dangerous to dig too much into some people's business, even if you are a LEO. 3. LE believes that the people who commit crimes will be taken care of eventually by the families of their victims, and there is a tacit acceptance of vigilante justice down there. 4. Lack of motivation. These investigators are not only lazy, but they are also notoriously undereducated.

Much of this is tied to the poverty, drug addiction, gang problems, and the fact that they are right off I-95. Human trafficking is also another huge issue, which they don't have the resources to deal with.

Sadly, I doubt we will see an arrest in this case. You have to be on camera holding a weapon to get charged with a capital crime down there. That's why it's such a dangerous place to live, and that is also why no amount of reward is enough for anyone to talk. They run the chance that instead of a reward for solid information, they will turn up missing.

Just wanted to point out that Star News is actually out of Wilmington, NC.

I agree with most of what you have posted. The Lumbee Indian tribe do not want outsiders in their business. And yes, you are correct that they do not want news reporters "prying" into their lives. Many of these families worked on my job and they are very close knit. Many, many of the law enforcement personnel are relatives with the community and yes, if possible, they take care of matters on their own. I can fully understand why the grandmother, step-grandfather and uncle of Mariah got out of the neighborhood.

I've seen it, too, lonetraveler. The Lumbee's are close-knit in many ways, and they go back several generations in the same areas -- where they have settled and still live close together, worship together (not necessarily in the same church, but in proximity), regional schools where many Lumbee children are together, etc., etc. They are a proud people and they do like to do things on their own. And LE in those areas -- Pender County, Robeson Co., Hoke Co., and a few others, are pretty close-knit as well -- LE knows the ways of the tribe, and certainly some Lumbees are LEOs as well. J'ville is in Onslow County and is about 37 miles from Willard. Willard is a very small unincorporated town -- lots of farming by family farmers -- nothing big.

I was born & raised in the city of Lumberton in Robeson County, but I left to go to college and haven't lived there in many years, but some things don't change very quickly. Growing up, I was not very close to where many Lumbees live, nor in schools close to many, but they were not far away. And of course, Lumbees do live in Lumberton, as well.

Is there any updates on this case? I can't seem to find one

The only info I found recently was this YT interview with sheriff, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nyxa7wIf8L0

They did a rape kit, she was strangled. The original MSM reported she was living with her grandmother and uncle. They have moved away. I pray there is some resolution for this baby. She was absolutely beautiful!

Video removed by user it seems. I wonder why?

“Rape kit results? If you have those yet or not?”

“It’s an investigation that is ongoing, and I just don’t want to let anything out right now to let anybody know where we are,” said Sheriff Smith. “We want to resolve this.”

Stein’s office informed us the Sheriff received the kit January 24th. The office confirmed the State Bureau of Investigation sent them back partial evidence.

After talking to a spokesman for the office, they tell us they are still waiting on more evidence that could come out of the autopsy. They tells us they have not received the autopsy as of yet.

Even toxicology doesn't take this long. Paitin was buried before Mariah Woods was reported missing, and that case is going to trial right now, so while I'm glad they spoke with you, oceanblueeyes, I wish they would have been a bit more forthright in answering your questions.

Down there in that area, I've noticed they will refuse to release information by blaming it on the autopsy, but in truth they just don't want to release information. We will soon be coming up on a year since the discovery of the first two victims in East Lumberton, and they have also not yet released autopsy results for them either. I'm not buying that those autopsies aren't complete, they just don't want anyone to know, because if we did, we would ask more questions.

There is a concerning pattern of not resolving cases down there in Robeson, Pender, and the surrounding counties. It could be many things like lack of resources, staffing shortages, etc, I won't say any more than that about possible causes. But whatever the problem is, it needs to be addressed and resolved so cases can be brought to court. Each individual case suffers when systemic problems in agencies exist, and there are many open cases which point in that direction.

Well, don't rush yourselves! It's not like there's a child rapist and murderer on the loose!

The lack of action on this case is driving me nuts.

Yep. Paitin was in the ground before Mariah went missing and her alleged killer's trial is already underway. Something isn't right. Especially when there were only three adults in that trailer that night.

What in the world is going on with this case???
