I have read that the mattress HAS been recovered, in Australian media.

I have read that the mattress HAS NOT been recovered, in US media.

Could someone please tell me if LE has recovered the old mattress or not? TY!

yes I agree wondergirl.....it was all over the news here yesterday that they found the mattress in the dump (landfill)

Why do ya'll think her "simple worthless check" charges are $2,000 each and his "simple worthless check" charges are only $1,000 each?...

My guess would be that she signed the bad checks and maybe his name was on the account??

My understanding is they found mattresses but not Zahra's.

I believe they were continuing a false report filed by Fox over the weekend, all the papers I viewed yesterday with this story were Fox affiliates.

news.com.au
heraldsun.com.au
townsvillebulletin.com.au

etc....

Could be wrong of course, but think that the local NC media is more reliable than ours here.

bad reporting on the mattress. LE states that they did not find anything during landfill search. LE did find several mattresses (go figure in a landfill) but they were NOT Zahra's

TIA to everyone who will provide the NG play-by-play.

I know a TON of people who home school. Our public schools allow them to participate in some of their programs, like sports, for example.

Home-schooling.. I imagine if you know what you're doing would be great in many ways, but I honestly believe there does need to be more monitoring of home-schooled children by someone...whether it's the school system or some other entity. People that are doing it the right way and for the right reasons shouldn't mind and however one feels about home-school, it obviously serves as such an easy safe haven for abusers as well...moo

When DSS/DCF workers don't have current teachers, neighbors (of more than a couple of months) to speak to, it really ties their hands..as well as Dr's and hospitals and since I haven't heard mention of any medical records in the US for Zahra, I am *assuming* at this point there is none..IF that is the case..with her history, that in itself is a shame..

LE has been known to search at night for the missing too.

(Sorry to grab your quote Kimster, I know you know this already, just needed something to reference.)

I am quite certain that they have been searching around the clock since she was reported missing.

The only reason we haven't heard about it and it hasn't been made public is because LE and all of the personnel that they have brought in is doing a great job of keeping it quiet and out of medias view. Rest assured, these men and women have been working 24/7 for the last two weeks, both behind desks and in the field. NOBODY wants to find this little girl as much as those that have and continue to be out there looking for her.

The only recent article to claim that Z's mattress was recovered was in the Melbourne tabloid the Herald Sun, which did not provide a source for its information; indeed, it did not even attribute its article to a specific author, using only "by staff writers" instead. Not the most credible source then.

Well, okay, but what about this article????

Mattress Found in Landfill Could Be Key Evidence in Case of Missing North Carolina Girl

North Carolina police hope DNA from a mattress found in a landfill will help crack the case of a 10-year-old girl who has been missing at least two weeks.

The mattress belonging to the missing girl, Zahra Clare Baker, had been thrown out by her parents days before her father reported her missing Oct. 9, police said. Police didn't expect to find her body in the landfill.

"Investigators hoped to use the mattress to confirm interviews with persons associated with this investigation and to reinforce the timeline," Hickory, N.C., police said in a written statement announcing the conclusion of their landfill search. "We also hoped it could provide some DNA evidence related to this case."

None of the comments provide direct, attributable, named sources. Typical Fox reporting - sensation over fact.

It was also on the local radio here as well......

just goes to show...

this is the exact article word for word that I am reading in the sunday mail and was in the townsville bulletin.....

Wondergirl, the inaccurate reporting came from FOX news and was picked up by Aus.com affiliates. Fox, I believe has now corrected, or is at least reporting it accurately now, however once the inaccurate info hit via fox it spread like WILDFIRE and is still spreading.

There has been alot of that sort of thing going on lately. I am sorry, I know it stinks to have that bubble burst but it has been thouroughly and unequivocably de-bunked.

ETA once it is on the net, just like anything else, it is there permanently for all to see.

Could be because she had many, many more prior charges for "simple worthless check" (I know for fact she DID have an extensive history of priors, along with numerous "failures to appear" in her bad check cases.)

I was going to say also..unless her worthless checks were written for more $. I know in SC that over $500.00 is one specific chg. over $1000.00 another and so on. But, other than for rent, weren't all of EB's less than that as they were written @ grocery stores IIRC..OR hers were written on a closed acct. vs active acct. and bounced. (as in closed acct. shows fraudulent intent from the get-go).. Just speculating..

John Miller (Hickory Daily News) says ...

No results of the search.

ETA: At that site he said they (media) were told they did not find anything

Thank-you, Revampz, I was wondering if there was a sort of "gentlemen's" agreement between LE and US media, to keep the fact that LE DID find Zahra's old mattress out of the media, and Australia wasn't exactly in the loop on the request to avoid reporting it?
