After Barbara was gone for three years Nickerson officially divorced her. Prior to this he had attempted unsuccessfully to divorce Barbara. I can find that newspaper clip too. He had asked a judge for divorce because he claimed that Barbara would take over conversation when guests were over and she had asked him to hang curtains. After three years of no word from Barbara he was finally granted his divorce.
Barbara apparently told her mother that she was depressed and she was unsatisfied with married life. She also suspected that Nickerson was unfaithful.

Barbara clearly was losing site of her dreams shortly before she got married. Life had certainly crushed her spirits in many ways. Her husband was of no help with that. Surprisingly enough they traveled a great deal together. Backpacking on vacations and journeying in the woods camping together.

Barbara was no stranger to disappearing though. She had a good idea of how independent she wanted to be.
She thought that if she killed herself her soul would finally be released.
She would run away from time to time but she always wrote to her family. She was an avid writer. Her nephew even published a book with all the letters he could find that were in reference to Barbara.
