Kathleen was attending Boston University as a freshman in 1972. Barely a couple weeks into her first semester in September, she hitched a ride from campus off of Commonwealth Avenue. [I read somewhere she was seen getting into a white vehicle...of note later on]

On October 1st, her partially nude(?) body was discovered by some local hunters off of Rt 111A in Nashua, NH on the Yudicky Farm Conservation Area. She had received a sharp blow to the jaw, but otherwise due to decomposition the cause of death was difficult to discern and no other details regarding her body were released to the public.

Throughout the latter half of 1972, multiple other young women from the Cambridge area disappeared after being last seen hitching for rides or heading to work. Their bodies were later found, often nude, raped, strangled and/or beaten to death. At least one other victim had received a sharp blow to the jaw, as Kathleen had. Then-Detective Robert Barry of Nashua PD, who was heading up Randall's case from the NH side, suspected a highly intelligent, psychopathic serial killer.

After a car chase and shoot-out with police on December 26th, a 33-year-old Boston-area pimp named Anthony J. Jackson was arrested, and after a thorough investigation was later indicted for at least four of the several Hitch-Hike murders: Damaris Gillispie, Ellen Reich, Ruth Abigail Hamilton, and Sandra Ehramjian. He used a gold Cadillac to commit the murders, which was located by police. Jackson was later convicted for three life sentences for the first three women, and much to the prosecution's surprise, found innocent by the jury on the fourth (Ehramjian). Evidence for the three he was convicted on was abundant and later detailed in public court files from when Jackson tried to contest his sentencing. (See below)

Kathleen Randall, as well as fellow young female victims killed during the same time period, Debra Rae Stevens and Kathleen O'Gorman, have been attributed by many to Jackson, but definitive information pertaining to these cases in particular and whether they were ruled out as being linked to Jackson is hard to dig up.

The murders of young women in the Cambridge area seemed to drop off instantly after Jackson's arrest.

Of note:

--Jackson possessed a metal container filled with hundreds of pornographic images of women--including his victims. He charged an associate of his, Donald McDonald, with disposing of the container. McDonald later testified against Jackson, and the container was located and retrieved from the river where it had been thrown. It is not disclosed publicly which victims had photographs taken of them--nor if the photographs included victims Jackson was NOT indicted for.

--Jackson is suspected of killing more than a dozen women. However, I have had a hard time locating any record of who these women are outside of those mentioned above. Donald McDonald testified that, while in holding, Jackson was shown an article in the paper about the murders and explicitly stated "The one from New Hampshire [Randall]...isn't mine. I have more respect for the FBI than that." In the same conversation he implied there WERE other women he killed, "others they don't know about," hinting some truth to the additional suspected murders. Of further mention, Jackson was known to travel to New Hampshire, and purposefully disposed of Ellen Reich's and Damaris Gillispie's remains a fair distance away from where he killed them to throw off the police.

In the 1980's, nearly all physical evidence from Kathleen Randall's cold case, as well as the cold case of another Nashua murder, Madelyn Crouse, were recorded to have been destroyed. This discovery was not made until the 2000's (before the NH Cold Case department was formed), when Nashua Detective Frank Paisson went to review Kathleen's investigation. The only person in the 1980's who could have ordered the destruction of the evidence was alleged by Nashua Detective William Hill to be then-Captain Robert Barry--the same detective who headed and was otherwise heavily involved in Randall's original murder investigation. When interviewed last Fall by the Nashua Telegraph, Barry said he had no recollection of ordering the destruction of evidence to "clean up" the records department.

The status of evidence from the other possibly related and (not known to be solved) murders of Debra Rae Stevens, Kathleen O'Gorman, and Sandra Ehramjian, is unknown.

Thought I could directly edit in additional information later on, but I guess there's a 60 minute window...that's unfortunate.

I called all relevant police departments inquiring about the current status of any investigations--open, cold, or closed--pertaining to Sandra Ehramjian, Debra Rae Stevens, Kathleen O'Gorman, and another victim whose name I only discovered this past week: Priscilla Lynfield. She had been found strangled with a scarf in her Chelsea, MA apartment on November 13th, 1972.

Regarding Sandra Ehramjian, the Brockton Police Records Department abruptly told me that they have nothing before 1983 due to a flood, and hung up.

Regarding Debra Rae Stevens, the Lynn Police Records Department sent me to a Detective's voicemail; he is currently on vacation and is expected to return this weekend.

Regarding Priscilla Lynfield, the Chelsea Police Records Department forwarded me to a Detective's voicemail. He has not called me back.

Regarding Kathleen O'Gorman, who is of particular interest due to the similarities in her death to Kathleen Randall, the Milton Police Records Department forwarded me to a Detective who offered to look through their records vault and took my contact information in order to get back to me. He also let me know that the Blue Hills Reservation, where O'Gorman was found, is under State Police jurisdiction. The State Police Records department asked for me to submit a public records request, and also suggested I do the same with the Massachusetts District Attorneys' Association, as they would be more on the "up and up" about homicide investigations, being more in touch with the relevant police departments.

In other news, I've been informed of the following:

Detectives John Donovan and Edmund McNamara are DECEASED.

We lived in Nashua in the 80s. People still talked about these crimes as well as several area disappearances. There were rumors of involvement from somebody in LE who moved from local police to MA state police, possibly was a Boston police officer as well. I never heard a name.

After submitting Public Records Requests to the appropriate District Attorney Offices, I was notified by an Assistant DA today that I will not be allowed to review the investigative files of Kathleen O'Gorman--her case remains open and unsolved, and otherwise the files available would still be exempt from public viewing.

This is ironically the answer I was hoping for, as it means her files are secured as opposed to destroyed like Kathleen Randall's. The Assistant suggested I contact her with any further questions...I'm going to take her up on the offer and forward my tip regarding reviewing the evidence from O'Gorman's case with a modern comb, and if at all possible relaying it to the NH cold case unit in connection with Miss Randall.

Summary:
Kathleen Randall, age 18, a freshman from Boston University, was reported missing on September 19, 1972. She had been missing from her dorm since September 13, 1972.

Her body was found at Yudicki Farm on Route 111-A in Nashua on October 1, 1972. All indication from the scene suggest that she had been deceased for some time. Kathleen Randall was 18 when she was last seen alive on Sept. 13, 1972. She went missing from her dorm that day, police said.

Randall was reported missing six days later, on Sept. 19, 1972.

Her body was found at Yudicky Farm on Route 111-A in Nashua on Oct. 1, 1972.

Authorities said evidence at the scene suggested she had been dead for some time.

The manner of death was ruled undetermined by the medical examiner because of decomposition, but the circumstances surrounding her death suggest foul play was involved, officials said.

Authorities said they have been investigating the case as a homicide.

More than 30 years ago, evidence in this case and another unrelated case was destroyed by someone at the Nashua Police Department, police said.

"It was destroyed by our evidence technicians, and it was done in the 1980s," Nashua Police Chief Andrew Lavoie told WMUR in August 2017. "Certainly, homicide evidence, especially open homicide evidence, you never destroy that, and that's certainly our mistake."

Investigations into the missing evidence were conducted by Nashua police and the Attorney General's Office. It was never determined what happened to the evidence.

"We found that some of the evidence had actually been returned to the lawyer of the estate of one of the victims," Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin told WMUR in August 2017. "Other evidence was missing or believed to have been destroyed."

Lavoie said evidence procedures have changed over the decades. Every piece is now given a bar code, audited and scanned into a database, safeguards intended to prevent evidence from being destroyed again.

"You can't get rid of homicide evidence without the attorney general's approval and a court order, both," Lavoie said. "Even if we want to get rid of it, we can't. But again, none of that mitigates what happened. It doesn't matter that it was in the 1980s and not now."

New Hampshire unsolved case file: Who killed Kathleen Randall?

I joined Websleuths to talk to other people interested in Kathleen Randall's case, because it reminds me of a case I'm very interested in.

In 1974, A soldier from Vermont abducted, raped, and killed a young woman in Kansas. I thought the man's MO and bizarre rationale sounded like someone who might have a history of killing. I decided to look for similar cases near his hometown. Kathleen Randall physically resembles the Kansas victim. Both women were taken some distance from their abduction points and their bodies left on farms. Both were taken in a light-colored station wagon (the soldier drove a light blue Opel wagon, which looks almost white, especially after oxidizing). The killer is in prison in Kansas, and comes up for parole regularly.

Here's the Kansas woman, and some early '70s Opels.

What do you think?

Just curious if you are still researching this case and Anthony J. Jackson? I've recently started looking into the Hitchhike Murders. Do you have any clue when Jackson came to Massachusetts and from where? The first documentation I could find for him was in Roxbury in 1962 and before that it's almost as if he didn't exist. I also find it extremely odd that every newspaper article about him has him born in varying years. The most common year of his birth based on the newspaper articles is 1939 which should mean he would be listed in both the 1940 and 1950 censuses but I've yet to find him in either.

Prior to the Hitchhike Murders, Jackson was arrested for attempted murder of an ex-girlfriend. He was unsuccessful but this was possibly the start of his violent crimes.
