Hi all...
Good observations J. I checked that website and Maura does seem to be wearing that necklace in most pictures. Some articles mentioned the fact that Maura had expensive jewelry in the car the day she disappeared...perhaps she had it with her. I know LE returned Maura's belongings (from the car) within a few days of the crash, but then went to her sister's house a few months later and took everything back, including her computer which was in her dorm room. Perhaps you should post your 'question' at Maura's forum where her family is sure to see it...
Maura's Website

Lily, the other discussion board on Maura on Websleuths had been active on and off, but sadly, there hasn't been much, really, since the old information was lost.

Calikid...I agree that there should be some sort of national protocol for LE to follow when someone disappears.....child or adult...some cities and states do.
They treat a missing person case like a homicide until it is proven to be a voluntary disappearance. The reason they do that is so that if, regardless of initial lack of evidence of a crime, it turns out to be a crime any potential evidence is not destroyed........

Murray - I see how it is frustrating for people with missing loved ones, and why they would want a missing person considered a homicide until proven otherwise - but that completely violates the rights of adults who want to leave. If a family member could call in a missing persons report on another adult who doesn't want to associate with their family anymore, and suddenly their cell phone records, their bank records are accessable to the cops and family, that's a horrible invasion of an adult's privacy. Or even a boy friend who wants to know where his girlfriend went off too and she wants to leave, the list goes on of people who legitimately want their privacy from other people who want to know where they are.

It's a balancing act, the cops deciding who has left on purpose and who has met with foul play. In Maura's case, it's an impossible puzzle.

Prayers for her family. It seemed to me early on that she would turn up, as time goes on it seems less likely.

Hi Katherine...I agree that it is a balancing act for LE...but I still maintain that there should be some national protocol, and that within that protocol there should be certain conditions. I am all too well aware that there are good reasons for some people to go missing...battered women, people who are being stalked, etc., but the other side of that coin is that some of these very same people are the most likely to have been victims of homicide. Laci Peterson comes to mind...for whatever reason LE treated it as a crime from the beginning...Think about how many people may actually want to disappear...criminals probably top the list with juvenilles running away from home running second in all probability...

In terms of Maura...her cell phone was in her boyfriends' mother's name and he got the bill....it shows no activity after 4:30 or so on Feb. 9, 2004 the day she disappeared....and yet, from reports, it appears that LE didn't even try to contact the last people she called, which turned out to be a rental place. Maura didn't stop her mail or close her acccounts anywhere....all of her credit card and bank account information was going to the family anyway. Too many things showed Maura's intent to return to school despite the fact that her room was packed (or not unpacked). She had school books with her. She had, that day, gotten accident forms to make a report on her prior accident. She had tried to reach her boyfriend more than one time and in more than one way. She had birth control pills, she had tooth whitener and her toothbrush, she had her jewelry, she had clothes for a couple of days...none of which she took with her when she locked that car that night. She asked someone to call a wrecker...all of these things lead me to believe she was probably just going down the street a bit to get a cell signal.

Katherine,

In my opinion, Maura's case - and that of many other missing persons - did not have to be an impossible puzzle. When LE does nothing to search for someone for days, then it stands to reason that any leads or connections can be forever lost - leads that would confirm the well being of a person or the possibility of foul play.

An HONESt, THOROUGH, and IMMEDIATE investigation should determine in MOST cases if the person ran away or if there was foul play. The problem is there is no protocol to address these cases, and if you will do research, you will find that routinely, LE ASSUMES the person is a runaway.

There are certainly policies and procedures for any LE agency when it comes to a person missing from the the scene of an accident: especially when as NH LE reported there was a suspicion of drinking and driving combined with snowy weather, cold temperature (12 degrees) and time of day (7:30 PM)......yet there was no search for Maura for over 36 hours. By definition of the law, IF she was drinking, she was an endangered adult when LE left the accident site that night; it is also possible that she meets the definition for an endangered adult due to possible injury from the airbag that deployed.

Perhaps it is because I witness the pain that those who love Maura are enduring; and have felt the cold fingers of fear for my own loved ones not only because of Maura's case, but also because of so MANY others portrayed in the news, that I do not ascribe to the theory/opinion that a thorough investigation is a balancing act.

IF the police search IMMEDIATELY -which is when they will most likely learn of any possible connection - and FIND that a person is starting a new life, then all that is needed is a press release stating that they KNOW conclusively that the person HAS NOT succumbed to foul play, but does not wish to be located.

It should not be "legal" for any adult to disappear while leaving people wondering about their well being and even instilling fear in a community as to the possibility of a criminal luking about.

It would seem that in our bureaucratic society, it would not be too much to require of any adult that wishes to disappear to file a certified statement with LE to PREVENT the unnecessary expense of taxpayers in an investigation as well as the fear and worry of loved ones.

Certainly, LE should never be expected to provide information to a boyfriend, girlfriend or significant other. However blood relatives are another matter - even the notion that a college age student is an adult and has the right to go missing seems a very skewed idea to me. Maura had been away at college for 4 years, but her residence was still with her mother, and like most college-age adults, she was still being partially supported by her parents. Do you not think that they/parents of other missing adults should not be entitled to information about their loved ones in a situation such as this?

I join you in your prayers for Maura and those that love her.

Thanks Murray Dwyer. :)
I wasn't sure if I had missed a lot of the continuing discussion.

That seems like the sensible thing to do. In so many cases, especially with older children and teenagers, LE just rushes to the conclusion that they're runaways, and by the time they get serious enough to suspect abduction, the trail is cold. If they turned it around and looked at missing children's cases from the other end- homicide- maybe more would be returned to their families.

Calikid, it would seem SENSIBLE if EVERY missing case, child and adult, was immediately treated as one that involved foul play. If no evidence of foul play is immediately found, there is no loss, but if time destroys evidence, all is lost, and the expense of looking for evidence at a later date is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I don't have real statistics, but let's be REALISTIC, how many of the missing ever turn up alive? Yet, often times and on occasion, years and years later, we have bodies turning up near the location of where a missing person was last seen. That situation leaves us with a near zero probability of ever finding the murderer.

I am convinced that murders are taking place that are being classified as Missing Persons and that the person behind the murder is a serial murderer on the loose because of LE's policies. I am not saying that LE does not care, I am just saying that their current policy is wrong.

I think I have become jaded, it just seems that our society as a whole does not have the concern for protecting life that we should all expect and demand......after all, the next time, it could be our life or the life of someone that we love that may not be protected.

It saddens me to see that Maura's thread has not had recent postings.

Wednesday, May 4th will be her 23rd birthday and just a few days short of her missing for 15 long months ~~~ it is another very sad day and a very long time for the family to not have any answers.

There is a link at her website www.mauramurray.com where you can express your words of comfort and support to her family.

I encourage you to add your thoughts and prayers here on websleuths as well.

.......with concern and prayers for Maura and all who love her :blowkiss:
