Maura's case is one of 2 that haunts me. The other case is that of Brian Shaffer. I was on the FBI site just now looking under the category of "Wanted: Kidnapped and/or Missing." Brian's missing poster popped right up. However, I scrolled through all of the others and could find none for Maura. So I put her name in the search for the site, and Maura's name did not show. Why would the FBI not have Maura listed on their site? My gosh, they have some people listed that went missing in the 1950's--but no mention of Maura. Could someone explain this to me?

I don't know where this ( rag in the muffler) deal got going as a sinister plot, but a rag will not stay in the exhaust due to exhaust pressure. If an object was stuffed in hard enough to stay and block the exhaust the car would cease running VERY quickly.

Snipped:

I was around her age, but it was back in the 1960's, and it's exactly what I did. Almost got thrown out of school as a result. Lucky for me nothing bad happened.

On second thought telemag - I'm a guy, and what I just said might be an apples-to-oranges comparison. Would a gal actually take off alone on a trip.... hmmm, now that I think about it, not so sure.
Also, my car at the time was in excellent condition....

A gal taking off in a car with problems is odd, and shows some sort of lack of concern...

I tried to put together a timeline of events that happened leading up to the disappearance of Maura Murray. I did NOT do any of the Investigating, Reporting, or any of the Foot Work. I am not trying to take credit for any of it. Basically I put other people's hard work into a time line.(I Hope that is ok- basically I thought it would be useful to see the event in the order of them happening) The Sources I used are James Renner's Blog and Wikipedia. Please ADD or Correct to any misinformation. I am not 100% positive that this timeline is absolutely FACTUAL. This is based on the best of my knowledge and the footwork other people put in!

Maura Murray Disappearance Time Line

Spring of 2003-

-(according to James Renner's interview with Hosseim Baghdadi) MM started seeing Hossein Baghdadi (on the DL) with the urge of her friends. They spent time going to movies, restaraunts or running. They talked about taking a vacation to the White Mountains so she could hike and he could go fly fishing. It was hot & heavy through out the summer (she drove to Amherst to spend some time with him) & then she suddenly stopped answering or returning phone calls or emails and broke the relationship off with out any explanation until she came back in the fall ('03) and told him that she had gotten back together with her "ex". (Billy Rausch).
According to Hossein, "She talked about running away. She said, 'I wish I could disappear.' When hossein heard she was missing, he thought, 'holy crap! Maybe she did it.'"

Early November 2003

-MM was caught using a stolen credit card & ordering pizzas. She was placed on a 3 month probation, to which if she didn't get in any more trouble she would be released from probation in February 2004. The theft amounted to $79.02

Thursday 2/5/04

-MM called her sister, Kathleen, MM seemed normal.

Friday 2/6/04-
1:00pm
: MM was at work when she received a phone call that made her upset. She was escorted back to her dorm room by her supervisor.

Saturday 2/7/04 (In order to the best of my knowledge in which event were happening)

-MM went used car shopping with her father. (still not definite)
-MM had dinner with her father & her friend, Kate Markopoulos
-MM dropped her father off at his hotel & then borrowed his car
-MM went to a dorm party with her friend
-MM's friend, Kate Markopoulos, was drunk & passed out at the party, remembers very little.
-MM was adamant about leaving the party and returning her father's car to the hotel, against her friends advice not to.

Sunday 2/8/04
2:30am- MM said that she was going to go back to her dorm room, instead she got into her vehicle en route to her father's hotel.
-MM crashed her fathers vehicle by hitting a guardrail on Route 9 in Hadley, causing $8,000 worth of damage. The police report noted driver inattention as the cause of the accident, but MM was not ticketed or cited.
-MM finally arrived at her fathers hotel. **(how she got there is still unclear to me, but I would have to assume by either police car or tow truck)
5:30am(around)- MM made (at least) one phone call to her Boyfriend, Billy Rausch (who was stationed in Oklahoma), from her father's cellphone.
10:30am(around) - MM wakes up & tells her father, FM, about the accident from the night before. (this is according to Fred Murrray's signed statement about his recollection of events leading to MM's disappearance)
-FM Rented a car
-FM dropped MM off at UMass
-FM headed back to Connecticut for Work

Monday 2/9/04

-"Sometime between Sunday and Monday morning, she packed up all her belongings in her dorm room, to include taking all her pictures off the walls, taking everything out of her bureaus, [and] put them all in boxes [and] left [them] on her bed," Scarinza told WCVB-TV, "[She] left a personal note to her boyfriend on top of the boxes." (**allegedly the note ended up being part of a conversation of an email from Billy to MM about an alleged affair that he was having)

12-3PM- MM made several calls including asking about information on a condominium in Bartlett, New Hampshire, that her family had annually vacationed at for years, leaving a voice mail with another student, and a number giving recorded information about Stowe, Vermont for about 5 minutes.
1PM- MM sent an email to her bf, Billy Rausch, saying she had not felt like talking to anyone, but that she would call him later in the day.
2:18PM- MM made a phone call to her bf that lasted approximately 1 minute.
-MM searched MapQuest for directions heading to Burlington VT, using her computer
4PM (around)- MM e-mailed one of her work supervisors and some of her teachers to inform them that there had been a death in her family and that she would be out of town for several days, despite there being no such death.
3:30-4:30PM (sometime between)- A dorm mate reported seeing Maura leave the UMass Amherst campus
-Maura withdrew $280 (leaving her bank account nearly empty, paychecks due from her job in coming days) from an ATM and was recorded by CCTV footage. (she was alone)
-Maura then bought $35-$40 worth of alcohol (Vodka, Baileys, Boxed Franzia wine)
-Maura left Amherst, presumably driving on Interstate 91 north.
4:37PM- MM checked her voice mail messages.
7:29 PM- Police dispatch received a call from a Woodsville, New Hampshire resident, who reported an accident near her house on Route 112.
7:43 PM- another Woodsville resident reported a black Saturn partially in the road.
- (not sure exactly when this event happened)- A bus driver said that he spoke to a girl he later identified as Maura, and asked if she wanted him to call the police. She told him not to bother, as she had called AAA. (there was no cellphone reception in the area & AAA says no call was made to them.)
7:46 PM- an officer from Haverhill Police arrived on the scene. The girl who was seen by the second caller and the bus driver was not present. The car was facing westbound in the eastbound lane, locked and with a cracked windshield and two deployed airbags. A damaged box of Franzia wine was found on the rear passenger seat. (According to James Renner, he got official word from the PD that all alcohol was accounted for & left in MM's vehicle, where it was later found & cataloged by police, however other reports stated that the vodka and baileys were missing)
**other items found in the car include Maura's AAA card, the insurance forms she retrieved for her earlier accident, her gloves, music CDs, her makeup, directions for Burlington and Stowe, a favorite stuffed monkey, and the Nicholas Howe book, Not Without Peril, a book about climbing in the White Mountains. ***Family knows of a black backpack that MM owned. It was NOT left in the vehicle and still is unaccounted for.
8:00PM (just before)- The EMS and a fire truck arrived and quickly cleared the scene.
8-8:30PM- A Swiftwater, New Hampshire local reportedly saw a young person moving quickly on foot eastbound on Route 112, about 4 to 5 miles (6 to 8 km) east of where Maura's vehicle was discovered. The young person was reported to have been wearing jeans, a dark coat, and a light-colored hood. The witness reported that the person, upon being seen, quickly ran down a side dirt road. There have been inconsistencies in multiple interviews. (**this event was reported two days later)
8:49 PM - MM's car was towed to a local auto repair garage by Mike Levoie. He noticed the rag from MM's roadside kit stuffed into the saturn's muffler pipe. **According to James Renner, he interviewed Mike Levoie, he confirmed he noticed the rag and asked Fred Murray about it later. "He said he (FM) told her (MM) to put it there to keep it from smoking. The car was not running well."
9:30 PM- Police officer left to attend another call.

Tuesday 2/10/04

12:36PM- BOTLO (Be On the LookOut) was issued to Grafton County, Littleton, Haverhill, and Lisbon.
3:20PM- A voice mail was left on Maura's father's home answering machine stating that car was found abandoned. (He was working out of state and did not recieve the call)
5:00PM- Maura's older sister contacted her father to tell him that Maura's car had been found abandoned.
( Exact time unknown)- FM contacted the Haverville Police. He was told that if Maura was not reported safe by the following morning, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department would start a search.
6:46PM- Maura's family members contacted the University of Massachusetts Police Department, and requested that her dormitory room be checked.

Wednesday 2/11/04-

(Before Dawn)- FM arrived in Haverville, N.H.
8:00 AM- New Hampshire Fish and Game, the Murray's, and others began to search for Maura. A police dog tracked the scent from one of Maura's gloves 100 yards east from where the vehicle was discovered, but lost the scent.
5:00 pm- Maura's boyfriend and his parents arrived in Haverhill Police Department. He was interrogated in private and then was joined by his parents for questioning.
7PM- The police said that they believed Maura came to the area to either run away or commit suicide, although her family believed that this was unlikely.
(Exact Time Unknown)- Maura's boyfriend allegedly received a voice mail message, since deleted, that he believes was the sound of Maura sobbing. His cellphone had been turned off during his flight. The call was traced to a card issued to the American Red Cross. **According to James Renner, "A source close to the investigation now confirms the person who made the phone call has been located and interviewed. It was a Red Cross worker trying to reach William in reference to his requests for emergency leave from the military (the Red Cross can help servicemen get emergency leave in some cases). The Red Cross worker hung up because they believed they had reached voice mail and did not want to leave a message, opting to call again later to speak directly to Rausch."**

Maybe the Police know where Maura is? If in fact they have located her, would they make it public or tell her father if she didn't want them to? I doubt it. Perhaps that's why she's not on the FBI's Missing/Wanted list. Perhaps this is why they absolutely refuse to give Maura's Father any information regarding her case? She does have the right to privacy. I'm not sure if I quite believe this, but is it possible?? They would have to label her case as INACTIVE, right?

@OLDSTEVE--I am new to this and unsure of my ability to attempt a quote. However, in regard to your post about single women and road trips--I used to do it all of the time. From the time I got my driver's license (16) until my 20th birthday when I got married, I would hop in the car and just head west. The longest trip was through Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. This was the 70's so no cell phones and no credit cards, just stuffed my cash in the glove box. There were times I picked up hitchhikers a long the way for the company. Thinking back I probably caused several guardian angels to resign their positions :)

Now long divorced at 57, I will travel to the summer cabin in the dead of winter. I will take my ancient car and head up there even when snow is predicted. The entire community there is gone for the winter. I love the solitude there during the closed season. Just me and silence. So I can understand Maura's need to go somewhere she is familiar with and just be by herself to sort things out.

There was a case on Disappeared a few years back about a man who got involved with a cult. He was very into the cult, but also close to his family. And then one day he disappeared. Everyone searched for years, but he was never found, so they made the Disappeared episode.

A few years later, police contacted the family to say that he had been found alive and well, but that he did not wish to speak to his family and that they could not disclose his location.

So I got the impression that the police will contact family and let the public know a person has been found, all without revealing their location.

Thanks for your post! Also, :welcome: to this thread - great to get another point of view - and it's most interest to read- thanks!

Thanks for putting together the timeline Taraose, and :welcome: to this thread!

That sounds like the person often refered to as the contractor who lived close to accident, but I thought he didn't come forward till weeks (month?) later?

Yes! Thank you for correcting me. It seems I was wrong. I was in fact talking about Rick Forcier and he didn't mention seeing MM until some month(s) later.
Also! Thanks for the Welcome! I'll try to be as much help as possible!

Another thing I missed in thing timeline:
Thursday 2/5/12
7PM- Maura started work as a security guard to students that entered the dorms.
10:30-10:40- The lead supervisor realized that MM was upset. She asked her what was up, but she was unresponsive. She then started crying and said "My Sister"
-MM was sent back to her room. She was so upset that she couldn't sign out herself so her superviser, Karen Mayotte, did it for her.

Why in the world would her father tell her to stick a rag into her exhaust pipe to prevent the car from smoking? I can't think that any adult would be unaware that such an action would be dangerous at best.

So many of FM's statements make me wonder. All added up I really think he knows something he isn't saying (or thinks he does). I think he thinks MM went off to kill herself and just does not want to say so.

Yes, that is odd, and when I was young did allot with cars - even had two years of auto mechanics in HS, thinking I wanted to work on cars for the rest of my life (OT, thanks to my teacher who was best consular anyone could have, he talked me out that and I went into electronics) but placing anything inside a tail pipe is something I never heard of doing if exhaust system is sound... but:

Smoke commonly comes from oil burning.... Her car I heard mentioned had one cylinder not firing, if so I would think car would have been backfiring if this was ignition related since unburnt mixture leaving cylinder would explode once it got into the red hot manifold and beyond - producing what we hear as backfiring...

If exhaust system is without major leaks, then rag would be blown out the pipe by pressure of exhaust, unless some really was made to stay, but then car would not run right and even stall, would think this would make exhaust more smokey (there has to be exhaust) so ...

If exhaust is really leaky, then perhaps the logic was for the smoky exhaust to go out the leak(s) beneath the car and not appear coming out the pipe.... not safe in that exhaust might wind up in her car, and the back firing would be exposed under her car...

Be interesting if she had a window partially open while driving - to get air to alleviate exhaust going into the car...

But it's the backfiring I wondered about. Wished her car had been run to see how it ran (would have been good to test it for the book that was written) as I thought a gal driving a car that backfiring would call attention to herself, and change the dynamics of this case to one in which someone could have heard the noise and been following her -kind of like sharks attracted to wounded...

ETA - car would have gotten poor gas mileage - so many more stops, and more places to attract someone unwanted...

I have also found it weird she was not on the FBI's most wanted list for missing persons, but then again, Brianna Maitland is not either, and both disappearances there are similar due to the girls' stats and circumstances, with their cars found abandoned.

I also have that question, would they have to label her case as inactive, or no? I have read some missing persons cases where they are found alive and well years later, but want their privacy. Still, usually then their cases are at least quietly pulled off of websites and such.

ETA - Most like Saturn problem was a fuel injector problem, and as such, it wouldn't have been backfiring.

Just a few corrections to note:
Friday 2/6 --- Maura was at work and became upset and her supervisor was notified and responded sometime around 1 a.m. (maura was not on a phone at the time she was found upset). Any link to a phone call which made maura upset is pure guesswork with no proven fact. Maura mumbled "my sister" when the supervisor asked her what was so wrong. Police noted maura talked to her sister (hours earlier) and concluded that the phone call (might have been) what upset Maura. No facts to back it up or to back up that maura really meant "my sister" when the supervisor asked her what the matter was.

At the Saturday 2/7 dorm party, it wasn't maura's friend kate that was passed out but rather the dorm room's occupant sara alfieri, a friend of maura's who worked with maura at the campus art gallery and who also talked to maura on the sunday after maura's car accident (with her father's car) and Maura did not tell sara about the accident.

The tow truck did drive maura back to the hotel and also released the smashed up vehicle *her father's car* in the hotel parking lot (hotel has two parking lots, one large one in the back). The next morning Fred arranged for a separate tow truck to come tow the car away.

Lt. Scarinza correctly noted that maura left a personal note to her boyfriend (it doesn't matter that the note wasn't written by maura and that it was just an old email correspondence between the couple. Fact is, it was personal and most likely it was intended for her boyfriend, therefore maura left a personal note to her boyfriend.

The mysterious phone call that maura's boyfriend received (believed to be maura's voice wimpering and sobbing) at the airport WAS turned over to investigators who reviewed it and believe that what they could hear was simple phone static.

one other correction on something I posted.

I believe that maura lived on the fourth floor of the high-rise Kennedy Tower dorm and I noted that after her dorm party *which only consisted of a handful of people* maura walked downstairs to her dorm room.

I went back and verified and maura and her friend kate had left the party and maura walked UPSTAIRS to her dorm room. So sara's dorm was on a lower floor not a higher one. My mistake.

Also one other not often talked about tidbit/fact

Maura's "Good childhood friend" Katie Jones (Who is interviewed on the ID Disappeared show) actually went to college just 31 miles away from maura while maura was at UMass. The two never hung out. Katie had no clue maura had left west point and transferred to UMASS. Katie went to Western New England College in Springfield, mass.

This was one of maura's best friends.

Also one other not often talked about tidbit/fact

Maura's "Good childhood friend" Katie Jones (Who is interviewed on the ID Disappeared show) actually went to college just 31 miles away from maura while maura was at UMass. The two never hung out. i grant you its weird that she didnt know MM had left west point, but them not hanging out despite being "close by" doesnt raise any red flags for me. FWIW, I went to UMass and one of my closest friends went to school in Springfield and in 4 years we never saw each other once at our respective schools ... it was just a hassle to get to springfield and we both had our own lives happening.

plus when i lived on campus, i used my car as little as possible because the parking situation at UMass is dismal... the lots were so far away and so poorly lit/maintained it was hardly ever worth it.

My best childhood friend was going to MSU and we never hung out because of the distance, but being best friends we still texted and called here and there...and when she made a transfer I knew about it, not right away, but eventually it comes up in casual conversation.

Texting was not that popular when Maura went missing. Most phones weren't designed to text easily and you were charged per each text. Thus texting her friend at another college as a means to keep in touch would most likely never happen. Maura did not pay for her cell phone bill--that was paid for the BF or BF's family.

I also have no red flags going up that she did not maintain contact with a childhood friend after she left for college. Who is to say that Maura and this friend even ran in the same circles before HS graduation? Then starting a new life with all of the demands of college --both academic and athletic, meeting the new love of her life (Billy), and adjusting to living away from home and everything familiar she had little to no spare time left. It happens to all of us, our lives get busy and old friends who have little to no connection to our current lives get put on the back burner.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.
