Found this article in today's Valley News...I know it happens everywhere, but it is one of the first things I thought of when I heard about Maura Murray...somebody driving by and forcing her off the road...then waiting for her....fortunately this woman got away somehow. There is more to the story and a composite picture on the Valley News site:

Cops: Rapist Forced Woman Off Route 120
By Jodie Tillman
Valley News Staff Writer
Lebanon -- Police are on the lookout for a man they say forced a woman off Meriden Road on Friday night, pulled her out of her car and sexually assaulted her.
...............

The attacker was armed with a weapon, police said, but Lt. Scott Hunt declined to say what kind. He said identifying the weapon could compromise the investigation.

According to Hunt, the woman was driving north toward Lebanon when a black Ford Ranger pickup truck passed her and sped down the road. But as the woman proceeded north, right before the Laplant Road intersection, the Ford Ranger was back and forced her off the road.

........ assaulted in a pull-off, the woman was able to get back into her car and drive away, said Hunt. He said he did not know whether her attacker let her go or whether she escaped.

.............

The woman described her attacker as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, with a large build. He had short blond hair, blue eyes and a prominent tattoo on his left bicep. He was wearing earrings in his left ear.

..............The part of town where police said the attack occurred is rural but by no means remote: Houses with big yards come one after another on the stretch of road. A number of other residents interviewed yesterday said either they heard nothing or were not home around the time of the incident.

..........

This is the second report of a rape by a stranger this month. On June 1, a Bethel woman reported that a man had entered her house while she was sleeping and assaulted her, Vermont State Police have said.

The victim, who was alone in the house, did not give police a description of the man that they could go on. Her attacker was unarmed, police said.

Hunt said yesterday he did not know about the attack in Bethel, but “Obviously, a heightened sense of security is always good.”

Anyone with information should contact Lebanon Police at (603) 448-1212.

Chrissy,
This site ...

http://community-2.webtv.net/SilkyBoxerz/MissingPersons/

Has a list of the missing in vt./nh and I do see a few from 1971. Hope this helps. The person who made this site knows a lot about cases up here. SilkyBoxers may be able to answer your question?

Hi Chrissy,

There are these two: (later than the months you inquired about)

Lynne Kathryn Schulze, missing Dec. 10th, 1971

Cathy Marie Moulton, missing Sept. 24th, 1971

They are listed at www.doenetwork.com if you need more detail.

I seen this the story of the valley killer in a book a couple of years back, it was interesting to me at the time and then I found this thread. Does anyone notice that all of the women either missing or murdered on this site, with the exception of Christina Lunceford have one thing in common? If they went missing in New Hampshire, it was in or nearest the cold winter months and if they went missing in Vermont it was nearer the warmer months.(lot in August for some reason.) Also with the case of Barbera Agnew, she was killed in New Hampshire(or at least found there) and her personal effects were found in a dumpster in vermont, her car was later recovered at a rest stop in Vermont. Her skis were stolen, but not the other gear that goes with the skis(poles,etc...). Call me crazy, but I think this guy, if it is the same guy, lives in Vermont and goes to New Hampshire for ski season.

Also, I haven't went through them all yet, because there are so many, but of the murder victims, it seems they were either, strangled or stabbed. 2 perps? ya never know, maybe they're competing. The stabbings I've found so far are very distinctive, in the neck and in the abdomen. Almost like a signature.

Portland Police Search For Missing Woman

Posted: October 14, 2005

Police in Portland are asking for your help in finding 24-year-old Lynn Moran. She was last seen on Monday night, in Portland's old port.

Police say Lynn Moran was in Maine visiting friends and family. She grew up in the Portland area, but was living in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Her family became worried on Tuesday, because she never showed up at her job Tuesday morning. Police believe Moran was last seen on Market Street in Portland's old port between 9:30 and 10:30 Monday night. They have been posting missing persons flyers in the area.

Moran is about five foot two and a hundred pounds. Friends who were with her earlier that night tell police they went home before she did. But she left her cell phone and purse at a friend's apartment.

Moran's friends and family say it would be completely out of character for her to just "take off" without telling anyone.

Police seek tips in search for missing woman

By DAVID HENCH, Portland Press Herald Writer

Police are seeking the public's help in their search for a 24-year-old woman who was last seen in Portland's Old Port on Monday night.

Lynn Moran, who lives in Shrewsbury, Mass., failed to show up for work Tuesday morning. Her parents, who live in the Portland area, have not heard from her. They say it is unusual for Moran not to contact friends or family for days at a time.

Moran also left her purse and cell phone in a Market Street apartment Monday night and did not retrieve her mother's car left parked near High and Congress streets.

"Because of all these things, we support the idea she is endangered," said Lt. Vern Malloch, head of the criminal investigations division.

I really wonder where all of these women are going? I hope they find her.

Northeast Kingdom Woman Vanishes

Albany, Vermont - January 9, 2006

Police in the Northeast Kingdom need your help finding a missing woman.

29-year-old Tina Fontaine of Albany was last seen Friday at Bob's Quick Stop in Irasburg. Investigators will not say if her disappearance is suspicious. They also remain tight lipped if she left any family behind.

Fontaine is five feet tall and weighs 120 pounds. She was wearing a baggy grey sweatshirt and jeans. She has brown eyes and long brown hair.

Give police a call if you have any information about Fontaine's disappearance.

Missing Women Prompt New Search Strategy

Albany, Vermont - January 10, 2006

"It's odd. It's very out of her character that something like this would happen," says Franky Niles.

Niles says he hasn't slept since Friday, when he kissed his girlfriend goodbye as he left their house in Albany. Tina Fontaine, 29, was last seen Friday afternoon, buying cigarettes at Bob's Quick Stop in Irasburg.

"She wouldn't just up and leave, at least without letting somebody know," Niles says.

Fontaine has lived in the Northeast Kingdom her whole life. She worked a substitute teacher at North Country High School. Her family, friends and six-year-old daughter haven't heard from her at all. Her car is in the driveway and nothing is missing from their home. She is seven weeks pregnant.

"What's going through my mind right now is everything. I feel useless, I feel helpless... there's nothing I can do," says Niles.

"At this time we have no reason to suspect foul play other than she's disappeared. We're concerned about that, but we're tracking down all the leads that are coming in and interviewing as many people and friends as we can," says Vt. State Police Lt. Leo Bachand.

State police say there is no physical evidence of a crime. But the detective division is not waiting to get involved.

"Usually the uniformed division would start on this and we would get called eventually, now we've stepped it up a little more," explains Bachand. "We have more resources, more time we can devote, where the uniformed guys are more emergency response and they have other duties with traffic and other stuff. We can commit our time and resources to a case by case basis, one case at a time."

The change-- a direct response to criticism that detectives waited too long to get involved in the disappearances of Maura Murray in Haverhill, New Hampshire and Brianna Maitland in Montgomery, both two years ago.

"Because of that we're trying to get right on that. The family deserves that. It's their daughter, their sister, they're concerned. We want to get in and do as much as we can as quick as possible," says Bachand.

Both Fontaine's boyfriend and state police hope publicity in the case will bring more leads. Anyone who has information on Fontaine is asked to call Vermont State Police.

WCAX - Tina Fontaine

Irasburg is about 22 miles from Montgomery where Brianna disappeared and 66 miles from the Woodsville/Haverhill area where Maura disappeared.

I just wanted to mention that I hadn't heard about this and can't find any info on my local tv station's website (wmur.com) about Tina Fontaine. I find this very strange. One would think that if the Vermont State police are asking for any help, that the request would be featured on our news since we are so near by.

Be aware of your surroundings,if your "gut"says that something is not right, chances are it is not right.

I have lived by the rule of always being aware of your surroundings and to pay particular attention to someone who is watching you, there is a reason they are! I graduated from the school of hard knock life and have lived in some very rough areas as a single woman and had more close calls than I care to remember. I always tell my daughters this and I don't care what area or how safe it is anyone can be a victim just by being in the wrong place so don't give the predator the opportunity. I always avoid areas I'm not familiar with but am extra cautious in those situations, sometimes it's just a deterent by showing that you are paying attention and not easy prey.

Strach304,

Thank you for your post.
Also something that people need to be aware of is;
Who are your childrens friends?
It does not matter how old your son of daughter is.
Here in Vermont I will tell you that the amount of incarcerated gang members is only getting bigger.
These people come here from out of state and prey on people who they can befriend have little or no family structure and want the person to feel loved and protected. These gang members also give the victims free drugs until they are hooked on heroin, crack or whatever else.So someone with a low paying job or no job will have to work for the gang to pay off the debt and feed the habit.I see the effects every working day,and I hear it all.
I could go on and on.

Are they dressing, talking or acting like the MTV rappers?Look at the makeup changes, are they trying to look like that.

The gang members look for that type of person to use.
