(NEWSER) – Cheyanne Bond wanted to be a nurse, but the money her family had saved for the 17-year-old's college tuition is now being spent on her funeral.

The cheerleader, who graduated from high school just two weeks ago, was shot dead in Newark Sunday night, and police haven't identified a suspect or a motive.

"They told her to get on her knees and they shot her in the head execution-style," her uncle tells CBS New York. "Just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time." Cheyanne was walking with her ex-boyfriend, who was also shot but survived.

That's quite unusual, right? For a woman to be told to get on her knees and then be shot point blank like that, for a simple robbery?

Perhaps the boyfriend can shed more light on who and perhaps why.. if this was not the act of a random total psychopath.

Sooooo, they shot the 17 y.o. girl in the head. Where did they shoot the ex boyfriend ????

On Tuesday, police released a surveillance photo of two males walking near the scene of the shooting who may or may not have witnessed the incident, authorities said.

Police said one of the males was wearing a white short sleeve shirt with a long sleeve shirt underneath and brown short pants. The second male was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a cap, police said.

I don't see the surveillance photo right off, but will post it later if I can find it.

Three teenagers were murdered in an execution-style attack in a Newark schoolyard in 2007. Four friends were told to lie face-down on the ground and empty their pockets. The attackers used guns and a machete. One of the four victims, who was singled out and separated from her brother and friends, survived. Here is the survivor's story (WARNING: Graphic):

In the shooting death of Cheyanne Bond, I haven't seen the condition of her boyfriend - only that he's recovering in a hospital and is a witness. We don't know how severely he was injured, so he may not be able to relate yet what he knows. The survivor in the 2007 Newark killing suffered permanent effects of her injuries. So, it may take a while before the BF is able to supply LE with information.

Why would witnesses not report a crime? Even if they feared retribution for getting involved, they could anonymously call 911 to assist the wounded.

Wonder where that is the men are standing. They are next to a wrought-iron fence. Along the sidewalk where the shooting occurred, there is a stone wall.

Thank you Indy Anna for the links to those precedents.

It does my head in, that people could be that callous to a young girl they don't even know. To *anyone*..

Once more, I am glad I live here, where just carrying a gun can get you a stiff prison sentence...especially now that drugs like crack and ice are so common here.

Her poor family..

I hope the young man who survived can help police ID these scumbags before they hurt anyone else.

The teenagers were walking along S 17th St. in front of West Side Park when shot.

I think the surveillance footage of the 2 witnesses is across the street. I've noticed, too, that most newer articles state that Cheyanne was with her ex-boyfriend rather than boyfriend. I wonder if this could be related to someone angry at seeing them together. Too many teens getting guns and killing other teens. But, it also seems that there have been a lot of teens (17-19 years) murdered in the Newark/West Orange area lately. Is someone out hunting down teens in NJ? I hope the perp(s) is/are found soon and brought to justice.

"I worry about being a victim," Rollins said. "I don’t affiliate with people who might get in a jam, but the way things are happening now — wrong place, wrong time — I don’t feel safe."

That sentiment has been expressed in neighborhoods across New Jersey’s largest city in the wake of another jarring killing.

"It’s hard growing up in poverty in Newark," said Kimble, 25, a graduate of Central High School. "It’s hard to leave when you don’t have the tools: Education. Guidance. Support."

Within the past two years, she said, five people she knows have been killed.

"I would never say you get used to it," she said. "You never get used to it. But there comes a point you have nothing else to say. There are no more words."

The Bendan Tevlin murder sceene is less than 10 miles from the Cheyanne Bond murder sceene.

Brendan Tevlin was murdered wednesday Jun 25, 2014... 5 days later, sunday June 30, 2014, Cheyanne Bond was murdered.

Both victims were shot.

And...Yesterday, in Paterson, NJ ca 13 miles north of Cheyanne Bond's crime scene, 12-year old Genesis Rincon was shot in the head (she is now braindead).
Some newsreport says Genesis Rincon was hit by a stray bullet some dont, so who knows?

I've also wondered if there's a connection between the killings, foreigner. On Brendan Tevlin's thread I posted this article that also tells about a young man named Brian who was murdered less than a year ago: http://thealternativepress.com/articles/a-fragile-thread-for-brendan-tevlin

Brendan didn't know Brian, but played the bagpipes at his funeral.

I don't remember reading about Genesis, but the article I linked in post #11 tells of several other area shootings of innocent teens. Very sad.

Newark NJ is, and has been for decades, an absolute crime ridden ch*thole. NJ has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country. Newark is full of criminals with guns. I went to school there. I used to drive from the parking deck to the freeway with my cell phone dialed to 911 so I could hit send and at least they'd know where to look for my body. A shooting of a teenager in Newark practically isn't even news. That's why I clicked on this thread. To see what made it different.

The story about the four teenagers shot on school grounds in 2007 is one I remember, I believe that was a case of ethnic cleansing.

FYI that would make it big news depending on who the shooters were (and more importantly who the victims were).

Hi, Sonya. I linked to an article on the 2007 Newark schoolyard slayings in post #6. The motive was robbery by 6 members of the MS-13 street gang and relatives, who had been drinking -- some of them juveniles. A couple of the attackers also sexually assaulted one of the females. All were convicted on most of the charges (a couple of defendants pled guilty). I don't remember seeing anything to suggest it was a case of ethnic cleansing. Here is another article in which charges against each of the defendants is outlined:

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/12/chilling_details_emerge_in_new.html

The case did bring about some security changes in Newark, but in light of the continued killings of innocent children (who are not even involved in drugs or gangs) people recognize that what's done is not enough. I'm glad more attention is being brought to these types of cases. Hopefully, it will bring about more changes to make Newark safer for those who are trying to do something positive with their lives.

Cheyanne's funeral was on Wednesday:

Cheyanne Bond’s college fund wasn’t supposed to be spent like this.

Just weeks ago, members of the 17-year-old’s family believed the money they had worked tirelessly to save would help cover books and other expenses as she prepared to pursue a nursing degree, the realization of a dream they had shared together.

Finally! An arrest has been made. Good work, LE!

Andre Fields, 31, of Irvington, was arrested and charged in the death of 17-year-old Cheyanne Bond, who was headed to college in September. Fields faces a first-degree murder charge in addition to robbery and weapons charges.

A beautiful life snuffed out during the robbery of a little iPhone. The article states a second suspect is still at large, but doesn't give his name or show his picture.
