"Suspects charged with shooting dead lawyer, 30, in New Jersey mall carjacking were driving a car that belonged to their MOM"

And it keeps getting worst. The Mom lives in South Orange, nice neighborhood, nice house. Henry is not from the slums in Newark. Yesterday on the news, the neighbors, who wish to remain anonymous, stated there was always a lot of traffic in and out of the Mom's house and expensive cars were often parked in the driveway. IMO) This MOM is either part of the gang or at the very least she was aware her son was carjacking.

More on Balsim Henry ...During his stay at a federal prison in Pollock, La., Henry flooded the federal courts with lawsuits and legal challenges to his sentence, earning a reputation as being something of a handful.
The attorney who represented Henry in 2006 when he pleaded guilty to the bank robbery charge, said he wouldn’t do it again. “I’m not representing him,” said John Murphy, a Staten Island attorney. “I’m not doing it.”“Difficult?,” Murphy added. “You know the old adage. If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.” Henry filed a federal civil rights lawsuit seeking some $20 million for what he claimed was an illegal search of his residence by federal agents and Newark police officers following the Nov. 26, 2003 robbery of the Union Center Bank.

I have heard that the "mom" is not biological mom, she is his aunt.

Jury Selection Begins In Mall Carjacking-Murder Of Toms River Man

http://patch.com/new-jersey/tomsriver/jury-selection-begins-mall-carjacking-murder-toms-river-man

Jury selection began Monday for one of four men accused of slaying 30-year-old Hoboken attorney Dustin Friedland during an alleged carjacking at The Mall At Short Hills in 2013, reports say.

Essex County resident Basim Henry, 33, will be the first of four suspects to stand trial for their alleged roles in a fatal shooting of the Toms River High School North alumnus and 2006 Bucknell University graduate, reports say.

In 2013, Friedland, 30, a Toms River resident, was fatally shot in the head during a carjacking when he and his wife returned to their SUV in a parking deck at the mall. Authorities stated that the couple's Range Rover was the target — not Friedland — in the incident.

Authorities have charged four Essex County men in connection with the shooting: Basim Henry, 33, of South Orange, Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington, Karif Ford, 32, of Newark, and Kevin Roberts, 35, of Newark.

The third day in the Short Hills mall carjacking trial was spent establishing a timeline in the days before and after the crime.

Surveillance video was shown in court of a GMC Suburban, believed to be driven by Henry to and from the carjacking site and registered to his residence, going through tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike. The owner of the Suburban was also reported to be Henry's mother.

In the video, the car enters the Turnpike around Exit 14 at 7:06 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2013, and exited at Exit 18 W at 7:27 p.m. A Range Rover registered to a woman form Holmdel entered at Exit 14 and got off at exist 18 W at the same times. They were also recorded going through the same toll lane, according to EZ Pass records the prosecution obtained from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

Surveillance was also shown of the what is believed to be Henry and the three other suspects in a liquor store. A man in a red vest was seen in the videos, and authorities later searched for a red vest and weapons at an apartment complex on Osborne Terrace in Newark. No weapons were found, but Essex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Michael Mossa testified that they did recover a red vest.

Day 4 of Short Hills mall murder trial focuses on suspect Basim Henry in his own words

Prosecutors played the jury a video recording of Henry’s interrogation hours after he was arrested at a Pennsylvania hotel. They say that Henry’s confession is on that tape.

Henry admitted during the interrogation that he had gone out looking to steal cars prior to Friedland’s murder.

“Think really hard. Did you follow any other Range Rovers home prior to the murder?” he is asked.

“No,” he replies.

Prosecutors are expected to wrap up their case Thursday. They are expected to call the driver who was allegedly followed in her Range Rover days before Friedland’s murder as a witness.

Final evidence presented in carjacking-murder trial

http://www.northjersey.com/story/news/crime/2017/03/23/final-evidence-presented-carjacking-murder-trial/99535200/

The trial in the fatal 2013 Short Hills mall carjacking case has moved forward as the presentation of evidence comes to a close.

Thursday saw a federal agent take the stand in the trial of Basim Henry, who is being tried for murder in the fatal shooting of Dustin Friedland during the night of Dec. 15, 2013. Also arrested for the crime were Hanif Thompson, Kevin Roberts and Karif Ford.

FBI agent John Hauger testified today about his work on the case. He is on the FBI's cellular analysis and Survey Team and specializes in historical cellular site analysis. He said he tracked the phones of the four suspects, which in 2013 could only be done when a text or call was active and connected to a cell tower. The data gives a general location, rather than pinpoint exactly where the phone is being used.

All four phones were active around Newark from 7:22 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2013. Only two were active from 8:45 until 9 p.m. around mall, Hauger said.

They were all active from 9:15 to 10:30 p.m. doing various activities around Newark that night though, said Hauger.

A woman allegedly targeted by the same suspects in a deadly carjacking at Short Hills Mall took the stand Thursday to talk about nearly becoming a victim.

Prosecutors say pictures and videos show the suspects following the woman, who owned a Range Rover, just days before Dustin Friedland was killed.

Prosecutors showed jurors video of the vehicle used by the suspects in the deadly carjacking driving around the Short Hills Mall three days before the shooting.

Thursday afternoon, defendant Henry stood with his attorney to announce he would not take the witness stand in his own defense.

The defense rested without presenting any evidence.
