UPDATE: vehicle located behind apartment complex in Paterson, body in car

On Sunday, the Passaic County Prosecutor's office said police received a call from a concerned citizen regarding an unattended car left in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Paterson.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Coley's charcoal grey Altima and discovered what appeared to be a body in the back seat of the vehicle.

The medical examiner will work to determine the identification of the body.

[h=1]Authorities Believe Body Found In Car's Back Seat Is Missing Paterson Woman[/h]
PATERSON, N.J. – A body found in the back seat of a car owned by a missing 24-year-old Paterson woman is believed to be hers, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the Sunday morning discovery said.

Official identification of Shanaya Coley's body and the cause of her death were pending an autopsy by a state medical examiner, authorities said.
However, authorities are certain it's her, one said.

Authorities said they had not yet identified the body that was found, nor did they describe the condition or contents of the vehicle.

But the woman’s father, Willie Coley, said a Paterson police officer told him that authorities were virtually certain that the body was his daughter’s.

“I got an answer to my prayers today,” said the father. “Even though it wasn’t what I wanted and it was bad news, at least it was an answer.”

My prayers for the family. The closure is better than not knowing but they have still lost a beloved family member. My only question on the scene. She was last seen being placed in the trunk of her car. If you are attempting to hide a crime, why move the body to the interior of the car?

Apparently the man who called it on stated he noticed a smell since the day before. Now, things I have heard from citiZens in the complex where it was found: a police officers mom lives there, the car was not there as of 2am Sunday and the spot it was left in belongs to a vacant apartment. How does one get a car that everyone is looking for from location to another? Did this person have knowledge about the vacant apartment?

One article says her car. Then another says a car. So idk which is correct.

It was definitely her car. I watched a live feed on Facebook and saw the car on the FBI tow truck.

The man who found Coley's car on Sunday told NBC New York the car had been in his apartment building parking lot for months. As the weather got warmer, he started to notice a strange smell he hadn't noticed in the winter, he said.

Well now, which is it? Was it there for months or sometime after 2 AM on Sunday?

Hard to say especially since the media is still talking about this supposed restraining order that i remeber thwm saying turned out to be false. Every news outlet is saying something different. I don’t know “which is it” that’s the point of this form no? Post as much info as we can and sort it out? Am I wrong?

A man who reported the vehicle on Sunday told the news station that the car, which was parked less than a mile away from where Coley was last seen, had been at the apartment complex lot for months. He finally called cops after noticing a strange stench coming from the vehicle.

However, Angela Johnson, Coley's stepmother, told NJ.com she believed the car was recently moved there.

I circled the layout of the apartment complex. The blue x is the approximate location of the vehicle.

I highlighted on the map in blue where she was taken from and red where she was found, to give everyone a general idea of just how close. Her stepmom probably believes the car was just placed there because this area for sure should have been searched extensively.

Authorities on Monday were still unable to say with 100% certainty that a murder victim whose badly decomposed body found in the back seat of a car owned by missing Paterson mother Shanaya Coley is her -- despite their belief that it is.

A regional state medical examiner "will be conducting further tests in an effort to positively identify the decedent," who was found slain with "puncture and incision wounds," Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald said in a joint announcement.

Wow thank you for posting this map. This whole time I thought she was kidnapped from the other side of town. I just started working in Paterson last year, just a few blocks from where her car was found and not far from the kidnapping site. And I thought this was the "good" side of Paterson (if there really is one).

it generally is. I believe this was someone she knew and I believe that the car may have been there since December, but the body was placed there recently. I know cold slows decomp but not to the point where the body JUST started smelling. Hopefully more news reports come out.
