Detention Hearings (@ 11am MT for Santos, @ 1:30pm MT for Bing & @ 2pm MT for Welch) - NM – LS -3 year old girl, brought to Univ. of NM hospital dead & allegedly sexually abused, Jan. 14, 2024 in Albuquerque - Kerri Anne Santos (33) arrested (1/14/24) & charged (1/16/24) with 3 counts of child abuse & tampering with evidence.
Albuquerque Police Department (APD) said Kerri Anne Santos, 33, brought her three children to the University of New Mexico Hospital just before 4am on Saturday, 1/14/24. One of the children, a 3-year-old girl, was wrapped in a blanket. Santos reportedly claimed she left Massachusetts & was traveling through New Mexico when her daughter fell ill. She stated the girl fell off a toilet & was injured before she went to the hospital where staff determined she was dead. Police were called. Officials noticed bruises on the child & pressure marks on her ankles. The Crimes Against Children detectives started to investigate after this discovery. “Today’s tragic news outrages me as a legislator & it disgusts me and bothers me very deeply as a mother,” New Mexico Senator, Crystal Brantley. “New Mexico needs to adopt stricter criminal laws that no one can come into this state & abuse any child in our state & have that tolerated.” Three other adults were linked to the case, Christina Hopkins Pena-Canto, James Welch & Austin Bing. APD said Pena-Canto, Bing & Santos were staying with Welch. Santos allegedly admitted the injuries happened at Welch’s home in the 2100 block of Gold Avenue SE. The other children were placed with the Children, Youth & Families Department (CYFD) while authorities investigated. Local police learned there were Massachusetts police reports of domestic violence & suspicions of Santos using drugs around her children. Authorities also believed the 3-year-old had been sexually abused. “LS has bruising in different stages of healing all over her body with areas of concern: bruising behind both ears, ligature marks across both ankles, linear bruising around right wrist, and linear bruising along underwear line that from front hip to rear of buttocks,” the report read. The 6-year-old and 6-month-old were placed in protective custody with New Mexico's Children, Youth & Families Department.

1/16/24 Update: A forensic interview was conducted on the older sibling of the deceased child & detectives learned that two other adults, Christina Hopkins Pena-Cantor & her son, Austin Bing, drove with Santos & her three children to Albuquerque. Detectives also discovered the children, including the 3-year-old girl, were sexually molested. Detectives learned of allegations that one of the adults would tie the 3-year-old girl at the ankles & wrists with shoe laces. Santos allegedly told detectives that Pena-Cantor ordered her son, Bing, to tie down the girl on the bed on Friday. After arguing with Pena-Cantor and Bing, Santos eventually took the girl to the hospital, the affidavit reportedly said. Santos was going to lie about what happened but later allegedly admitted the injuries happened at Welch’s home.

This is absolutely horrific. I wondered if she fled MA with her kids because MA Department of Children and Family Services is very strict. What is not clear is who was sexually abusing those kids, and it is not clear to me why the mother has been ruled out.

I wonder if these traveling monsters brought their prey to New Mexico thinking the state would turn a blind eye to their activities. New Mexico government programs are a far cry from the superior welfare services in Massachusetts. IMO
