Convicted in the 2019 shooting death of a Sandia High School senior, Izaiah Garcia will now face a trial in the fall for another 2019 murder case. According to newly filed court records, Garcia is now expected to go to trial in September for the murder of 21-year-old Cayla Campos.

Campos was killed in a shooting at Bianchetti Park near Lomas and Tramway in October 2019.Investigators say she and her boyfriend were playing Pokémon Go at the park on a Friday night when Garcia shot Campos.

It looks like First Degree Murder convictions in New Mexico are essentially life sentences with the possibility of parole in 30 years.

True LWOP does exist in New Mexico, it is restricted to certain situations- mostly those involving murder of police officers, murder for hire, murder in the course of sexual assault, murder to prevent court testimony.

Of course, being eligible for parole does not mean one ever gets it.

You need to be a special kind of evil to do something like that.
Not just beating and torturing then shooting someone 19 times, which is horrific on its own, but these boys were kids. Those were men.

Izaiah Garcia, the man behind a deadly shooting at a homecoming party in 2019, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday. In 2021, Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing 17-year-old Sean Markey outside a home near Eubank and Montgomery in 2019.

Judge Brett Lovelace handed Garcia a life sentence plus two and a half years.

Garcia is also set to stand trial in September for a separate shooting that left 21-year-old Cayla Campos dead. Campos was killed in a shooting at Bianchetti Park near Lomas and Tramway in October 2019. Investigators say she and her boyfriend were playing Pokémon Go at the park on a Friday night when Garcia shot Campos. Investigators believe Garcia shot at Campos and her boyfriend as they tried to drive away from witnessing a robbery.

Garcia is also accused of stabbing an inmate last April while in MDC custody.

Good to see that the life terms are consecutive instead of concurrent. With consecutive sentences, "to life is going to mean for life".

On Thursday, Izaiah Andres Garcia, 23, was found guilty on all counts against him over the 2019 incident that culminated in the death of 21-year-old Cayla Campos. Jurors in a state district court convicted Garcia of murder in the first degree, depraved mind murder, shooting at a motor vehicle, armed robbery, assault with intent to commit a violent felony, tampering with evidence, child abuse, and conspiracy.

Witnessing an armed robbery in progress where three teenagers were being held up by two others at gunpoint, the couple quickly turned their car around and fled the area. But as Campos drove away, Garcia took note. Believing the driver to be a despised rival criminal, the killer took aim with a rifle and fired. Campos was shot once in the head and lost control of her car, crashing into a nearby home.
