The child abuse epidemic in New Mexico is just vile.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - A 17-month old is in critical condition and his parents are behind bars for child abuse.
. . .
Police say 35-year-old Florencio Mendoza and 24-year-old Dahn Leidy, his girlfriend, told different stories about what happened.
. . .
At one point, Mendoza claimed Leidy hurt the baby intentionally saying she wanted to watch him die and then commit suicide.
. . .
Doctors say the toddler is suffering from a lacerated liver and other injuries from blunt force trauma.

Mother, boyfriend jailed in extreme case of child abuse
. . .
Police say the boyfriend, Florencio Mendoza, called 911 Monday afternoon saying that his girlfriend, Dahn Leidy, had told him she was going to "hurt the baby, watch him die and commit suicide." When officers arrived on the scene on Bridge near Central they knocked on the door of Leidy's apartment for approximately 30-minutes.

Finally, they were able to make contact with Leidy who had the child on her hip. Officers say the boy was barely conscious and described him as having bruising on his right ear and mouth, bluish skin in the nose and mouth area, and a cut inside his lip.
. . .
When officers interviewed Mendoza, he told them that he could hear Leidy hitting the child but he did not intervene. He also told police that his 13-year-old son witnessed her kicking the boy.

Mother, boyfriend jailed in extreme case of child abuse

Mendoza called Albuquerque police Monday afternoon to report that Leidy told him she was going to “hurt the baby, watch him die and commit suicide.”

Police say they went to Leidy’s apartment and knocked on the door for a half hour before Leidy came out in a towel holding the 1-year-old. Leidy denied hurting her son, and told police she had gone out to her car and returned to find him with a bruise on his face. She said he then started vomiting “brown and blood” and blood came out of his nose. Leidy told them she didn’t call for help because her cellphone was broken, but she later admitted that the phone works and she just didn’t know where it was. Leidy also told police she had been smoking meth and marijuana.

When police interviewed Leidy’s boyfriend, Mendoza, he changed his story several times. He initially said he was not in the apartment when the baby was harmed, but he eventually said he and his 13-year-old son saw Leidy beat and kick the baby repeatedly but didn’t do anything. Once the baby began to throw up, Mendoza told police he did several “hard” abdominal thrusts on the baby until the baby vomited more.

Leidy then told Mendoza to “get the (expletive) out.”

Mendoza told police he collected all the drugs and paraphernalia from the apartment and left with his son, throwing the drugs in an open field on the way to his mother’s house.

This was just too painful to read, I actually lost my sleep because of this :(:(:(
How can any mother do this kind of monstrous thing to her little toddler?! I pray this little angel will be strong to stay alive and get a new home and loving foster parents.

AGAIN a history with CYFD!!! This makes me so angry. (I haven't been able to find any updates about the condition of the poor child as of yet, except that he was medically induced into a coma.)

The NM governor has helped contribute to the dismal state of affairs when it comes to CYFD. She appointed a person with no relevant experience whatsoever to head up the department: THE FREAKING TOURISM SECRETARY (who formerly worked for Gatorade and Quaker, for godssake).

Predictably, having no education or knowledge about civil service, or social work, or anything beyond marketing, the appointee promptly launched a PR campaign full of billboards and such to say how much New Mexico cares about its children and basically advertise the fact that CYFD exists. Instead of, you know, using the millions of dollars to actually fund and oversee the department.

Remember that Albuquerque is also home to poor Omaree Varela, baby Brianna, and Victoria Martens, along with way too many other abused children.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Dahn Leidy and her boyfriend, Florencio Mendoza, are accused of beating her 1-year-old son.
. . .
According to authorities, this wasn’t Leidy’s first time being investigated by the New Mexico's Children Youth and Families Department.

Police were called to Leidy’s apartment on July 9 after a neighbor, Danelle Valdez, saw Leidy’s son walking around by himself.
. . .
The police report from the incident said the child appeared to be fine, but Valdez disagrees.

“The baby just looked really red and hot and possibly dehydrated. The baby did have circles under his eyes like he had been crying for a long time,” Valdez.

CYFD said it was still investigating the July 9 incident and is now looking into the new allegations involving abuse.

KOB also learned Leidy lost custody of her older child. The state gave custody to the child’s paternal grandparents after another CYFD investigation.

Officers reported family to CYFD twice, prior to abuse incident

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
A report from the Albuquerque Police Department said that, on July 9, police arrived at Dahn Leidy's home after a neighbor saw Leidy's son outside alone.

Investigators checked the home for safety and food and, according to court documents, they determined that 1-year-old Ezequiel Ramirez was OK.
. . .
According to the police report, officers reported the incident to the Children, Youth and Families Department.

But before they could wrap up their investigation, police were called to the home again.

This time, police said, Ezequiel had been beaten so badly, doctors had to place him in a coma to treat him.
. . .

(The article goes on to quote the child's maternal grandmother who claims she was shocked and that she never thought there was any indication of abuse. I find this hard to believe, especially since one child had already been removed.)

Could there be any news of this case?

Second Judicial District Judge denied a petition for pretrial detention, and ordered both Mendoza and Leidy be released.

Pretrial services completed a risk assessment of both defendants and recommended that both be released with certain conditions. Leidy’s conditions include that she not have any contact with a child 10 years old or younger, and Mendoza cannot stay at a residence with Leidy.

There are cuss words that go here because why? Why are they released? Is this just the way New Mexico is now with the changes to bail?

Drug addicts can't take care of themselves let alone children. I would like to see jails and free clinics promote and readily offer vasectomy and tubal ligation procedures for any convict that wants them. As a matter of fact, encourage it. Give them a cash incentive! It will save children from the horrific abuse that we learn about in this case, and society in the long run.

Second, anyone who has been convicted of doing harm to a child should be in a special database to insure they can never work anywhere near children. Daycare, school, even as a janitor or lunch lady. Nada. Any other living children must be given to relatives, and visitations must be supervised. Perhaps this could be an extension of the Meghans law database to show those convicted of child abuse.

Finally, let's make sure they have to wear a special colored prison outfit so all the prisoners know they have abused a child, and can be sure to let them know how they feel about it.

And that's how I feel about this case. For starts.
