    CHILD QUEST International has
joined in the search for Norman Basil
Pappas, 20-year-old resident of the greater
*Carmel area who has been listed as miss¬
ing since late July, Carmel Police Depart¬
    ment said Wednesday.

Despite the added help, Detective Sgt.
Warren (Pete) Poitras said, the man has
    not been located.

“Yes,” said Poitras, “that network took
the case. It distributes missing person
    brochures all over the place.”

Pappas 1 mother dropped him off at the
Naval Postgraduate School, where he had
a parttime job, on July 26. That was the
    last time she saw him.

“A friend observed him in the area of
the Monterey bus station at 11 a.m. the
same day,” Poitras said, “but did not

speak with him. Basil hasn't been heard
    from since.”

Originally, it was thought that he may
have traveled to San Francisco. Acting on
information supplied by his mother about
where else Pappas might have gone,
    Carmel Police Department has covered
South Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree Na¬
    tional Park with bulletins.

Very confusing case.

From what I've found, the Monterey bus stop is just a half an hour walk from the school. So assuming Norman's mom dropped him off for work around 9 a.m., maybe he asked to be sent him home around 9:30, arrived at the bus station around 10:00 a.m., and then maybe the bus (or the ride?) he was waiting for didn't leave till after 11 a.m., which is why his friend saw him there around that time.

But from there, what was his goal? Traveling to San Francisco makes sense because SF is two hours away from Monterey, so maybe he thought he could quickly sneak away and be back in time for his mom to pick him up after work.

But the other locations—South Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree—are way too far for a quick day trip. So unless he was planning to run away, I don't understand why he might've chosen these locations.

It should've been easy enough to find out where the buses that day after 11am were headed. Then to show his picture to every driver. This is assuming his friend actually saw him there. I'd start with whether he was actually seen at work independently of his mother dropping him off. Then check out the friend.
