Teken van leven van Arjen Kamphuis

Among family and friends of Arjen Kamphuis there is a glimmer of hope after the discovery that his phone has been used. "We have signals that the person who turned it on also knows the PIN code of the SIM card. So that indicates that it was Arjen himself," says Ancilla van de Leest, a good friend of Kamphuis.

The replacement of the SIM card by a German one doesn't have to be something remarkable, according to Van de Leest. " Because of his work, it is logical that he has multiple cards. And he also lived in Germany for a while."

Kamphuis is a well-known figure in the international world of hackers and cyber security. He advises governments, journalists and whistleblower sites such as Wikileaks. For example, he wrote the book 'Information Security for Journalists', which has been translated several times.

His disappearance immediately feeds all kinds of conspiracy theories on the Internet. Van de Leest: "Of course. Arjen is always working on projects that are not always pleasing to everyone. But lately he hasn't been doing anything else than usual."

Arjen Kamphuis is an expert in cyber security and that is the core of his work. He actually has a real job with a real company. Linked-IN profile here, he worked for all the big IT-consultancies.

As an expert in cyber security, Arjen knows that he can be traced through his phone. If he wouldn't want to be found, he wouldn't even bother to switch SIM card. He would remove the battery.

It doesn't make much sense.

Dutch police searched Kamphuis’ apartment in Amsterdam, taking DNA samples from his toothbrush, van de Leest said.

Partial breakthroughs have only added to the mystery. Police revealed that 10 days after Kamphuis had disappeared in the High North, someone tried to use his cellphone near the village of Vikesa, 650 miles south of Bodo, attempting to activate a German SIM card.

Unconfirmed sightings of the missing man have been reported in Sweden and as far away as southern Denmark, in two towns on the North Sea coast, Esbjerg and Ribe. Those reports and the SIM card pulled German, Danish and Swedish police into the investigation.

A grass-roots, crowdsourced hunt has also taken shape online, with people passing on potential clues and sightings to police. Some false leads have drawn the attention of amateur sleuths and the news media, including excitement a few days ago about the sighting of an abandoned tent in Lofoten, an archipelago north of Bodo that is popular with hikers, which turned out to be unrelated to Kamphuis.

Have you seen a white station wagon?
Witness may have seen that Arjen Kamphuis was picked up in Saltstraumen

Btw, Saltstraumen is a small strait with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. It is located in the municipality of Bodø in Nordland county, Norway. It is located about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southeast of the town of Bodø. (Wikipedia)

Would that have been round 4-5 pm? You can catch a glimpse of the following text: Dette var mellom klokken 16 og 17..

Is it known in what direction (to or from Bodo) the stationwagon was going?

A Security Expert Tied to WikiLeaks Vanishes, and the Internet Is Abuzz
By Henrik Pryser Libell
Sept. 7, 2018
OSLO — In a remote Norwegian town north of the Arctic Circle, a cybersecurity expert with ties to WikiLeaks checked out of a hotel, dressed in khaki hiking gear and carrying heavy baggage.

That was on Aug. 20. No one has reported seeing him since.

The disappearance of Arjen Kamphuis, 46, has so far flummoxed a widening police investigation that has chased stray clues and false leads in Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. Norwegian police have released statements saying that they have no idea whether he was a victim of foul play, but that they “are open to all possibilities.”
“After all this, there is no scenario that I haven’t thought about. It could literally be anything,” Ms. van de Leest said.

“He wasn’t afraid to make enemies,” she added. “He did not ‘hide his opinions under a chair,’ as we say in Holland.”
The uncertainty, and Mr. Kamphuis’s links to WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy organization that has run afoul of governments and other powerful interests, has the internet buzzing with conspiracy theories. Some suggest a kidnapping — or worse — involving Russia, the C.I.A., MI6, Islamists or the Clintons, while others ask if he intended to disappear, possibly on some secret assignment for WikiLeaks.

Other spurs to speculation include that Bodo, the town where he was last seen, is home to Norway’s main military air base, that the armed forces’ joint operations center is nearby, and that part of the country’s cyberdefense center is hidden in a mountain outside town. Investigators have ruled out any connection between the military presence and his disappearance.

Friends say that Mr. Kamphuis, who is Dutch, was genuinely in Norway for vacation, had been there a few times before, and had plans to return to the Netherlands."

All tips should go to the police. IMHO this one is among them.

I was watching the evening news of EditieNL. Stationwagon wasn't mentioned. Highlights:

Mysterieuze verdwijning in Noorwegen

- Dutch police officers will travel to Norway on Sunday to help with the search for AK
- Ancilla says: we hope that he is still alive, that is the most important thing for us. We might consider this [ AK's mobile phone connecting to the network ] as a sign of life, if so, we are very happy about that.
- Ancilla also says they cannot exclude anything. AK's disappearance may be related to his work. Then again, he may have suffered an accident while hiking. They cannot exclude that either.
- Tech-reporter's opinion is that since AK is an expert in cyber security, it is highly unlikely that any random person could get access to his phone. So there is a clear chance that this was indeed AK.

But no one knows for sure.

It was to Bodø the stationwagon was going at 4-5 pm... But later on you can choose to go left to Bodø or right to Fauske.

Can you read the entire article, Lorrie?

I would love to know if this person was carrying his luggage. It was said he had a foldable canoo with him and his luggae would have been considerable. (Backpack?)

It was a dark dressed man with a middle-sized backpack. I do find it strange to take all the luggage with you to see the Saltstraumen for then to go back to Bodø to catch the train, why not store it at the hotel or at the railway station?

If it really was him, maybe his intentions was to catch a ride with someone southbound instead of going back to Bodø and take the train?

Probably wasn't him. He would have been dressed in lighter colours that day according to the local police. The lightest canoe available measures 37x25 inches when folded. would that fit into a medium backpack I wonder? Uh uh... no. (don't know if he bought that type, but it gives an indication.)

His luggage seems to have disappeared with him, or was it found in storage at the railway station?

Probably not, the driver isn't sure either.. He states it was a man with long blond hair and glasses, late 40 to 50 year old. Not too many of them around. But the information is a bit detailed.

Haven't heard anything about his luggage so I guess it disappeared with him.

Did the driver tell where he took him? Railway station in Bodø comes to mind, was that where the man got off?

No, the problem is that the driver who think he saw him had no space in his car for more passengers. But a white merchedes station wagon stopped, so the newspaper hopes that this car driver would contact them!

In August it will still have been a lot of tourists in Saltstraumen, fishing there is very popular among Germans and other nationalities. So it can have been tourists who picked him up...

The video shows the wrong hotel and not the Scandic hotel he stayed at, beside the only new information it gives is that he spend some 7 days before at another hotel in town. So he would have stayed 10 days in Bodø, what have done those days before he disapeared?
