I have a vague impression that Nevada tilts "olde west" in regards to prosecutions and sentencing- due to the presence of modern casinos and tourism. In the end, it would not take much break down in over all law in order or violence against tourists to cost mega tax revenue.

Though this murder had nothing to do with tourism nor casinos, I think Las Vegas tries to "nip things in the bud"- crime wise, lest lightly sentenced and now emboldened perps start cruising the Strip for their next victim.

God have mercy! This might be even worse than the beating and murder of Reena Virk in BC, Canada back in 1997!

This case also reminds me a bit of the videotaped beating of Victoria Lindsay by six girls that happened in Lakeland, Florida back in April 2008! Thankfully that girl survived!

I had never heard of Reena Virk. What a trainwreck and tragedy for everyone involved.

But there is a reason it is often advised to not wander more than a block off the Strip. A reason why despite good pay they can't get teachers. The current DA has a catch and release concept, and been pretty soft. I like that so far he is appearing tough on this. But I want to see him follow through. I want to see the final result of this.

Thanks for the information. As a side note, the areas around the Fremont Street Casinos also seems well patrolled and safe.

Now that I think of it, your information coincides with a relative of mine (dedicated family man) whose company placed him in Las Vegas 25 years ago. He hated it for the reasons you implied:

Largely transient residents with no interest in the long term viability of a neighborhood (alot of fast money attitudes), chaotic drug fueled arguments at the miniscule park in his middle class neighborhood, and... a biker gang firing wildly into a home down the street pursuant to a dispute over stolen bikes and expected "tribute".

Even the mayor of Laughlin, NV turned him off when an Q&A session following a motivational speech at his son's elementary school revealed that the Mayor's favorite recreation was: "Drinking 'Jack' n' shoot'in craps".

Like the teachers, he only stayed three years.

Details are conflicting, but it sounds like 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis was trying to defend a friend after the friend was accused of stealing several items, and was jumped and beaten, eventually to death, by a mob, who of course filmed it and put it on social media.

not that it matters but for accuracy sake, the People article says that the friend was actually the victim of theft and thrown in a garbage can by the mob at which point Jonathan confronted them and they then attacked him

That's really a shame. If you're a teen and you already had a history with the justice system and now advanced to being involved in a murder, you shouldn't be given the benefit of a plea deal. You should be removed from society permanently via a jail cell for the safety of society.

So the boy has been in the system before, and now he has taken part in a murder, and is still being treated as a juvenile and getting a sweet deal. The mention of the gang referral is interesting as well. Certainly if this young man is put back in the same community there isn't going to be a different result. I understand a prosecutor may well think this boy deserves yet another chance. But if he goes on to victimize others, violently, I hope that prosecutor is willing to accept some blame.

I was afraid it would happen, too, because although collectively it's very very clear 10 teens brutally murdered another teen, deciding individual culpability in a court of law would have been so difficult. They were at risk for getting no convictions at all, and still are at risk for that if one of these teens backs out of the group plea.

My heart aches for his grieving mother. She feels like she is alone in grieving the death of her innocent son - prayers she feels the public support that she has in this tragedy.

You called it right waaay back in your response to me when you stated that Las Vegas's dependence on tourism revenue was very separate from how the soft on crime DA prosecutes violent crimes- well, at least those violent crimes that do not occur in tourist areas.
