Elk County Sheriff Dept posted a notice
FEMALE BODY LOCATED IN BURNER BASIN AREA.
The deceased was transported to the medical examiner’s office for identification.

They are not speculating who this may be by any means. I’m also unaware of the proximity of where this body was found to where Britney was last seen.

Here is the permalink to that specific post about the body being located:

I wonder if some of the delay is a result of Elko County not having a medical examiner's department.

Elko County

In this MSM article, it talks about what happens when you die in Elko County, Nevada:

Dying in Elko County

Elko County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nick Czegledi is the county’s deputy coroner responsible for investigating how people die. Whenever there is an “unattended” death Czegledi is charged with determining the manner and cause of death.

The funeral home also serves as the county morgue, Czegledi said. In the event of a suspicious death the body may be held there for a time, or transported to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.

It was a long article, with a lot of details, but I just quoted these two paragraphs.

About time: Sheriff: 16-year-old Spring Creek girl victim of homicide

A body found Wednesday between Elko and Spring Creek has been identified as a 16-year-old girl who went missing on March 8, and her death is being investigated as a homicide.

“While investigators have been working around the clock following up on leads and tips, a suspect has not been identified,” stated the sheriff’s office.

Relatively small community, victim taken in front of witnesses, vehicle clearly described - it's unbelievable a person of interest was not immediately established and much more than unbelievable at this point: suspicious
