I had both my adrenal glands removed. I had them removed due to uncontrolled Cushing’s disease and most likely the Jane Doe had hers removed for the same reason as that was the most common reason to have adrenals removed. If you have one removed, it is usually an adrenal tumor. CAH take a stronger form of steroids, but I don’t know of them having adrenals removed. But I can double check.

Yes, she would have Addison’s (more properly adrenal insufficiency as Addison’s is the auto-immune form, but has a large recognition factor so generally people and doctors now use that term). She would certainly need daily medications to live. We also tend to have low blood pressure and sweating can make us quite ill. Low salt is a very bad thing for us.

I do know people that have had their adrenals removed in the 1970’s, and they would have had an open surgery, aka a very long incision. Even some people today who use unskilled surgeons convert to open. I have many small incisions (and load more for other things) for my adrenectomy.

When I am not on here, I help other people with their adrenal questions... or lack of adrenal questions!

I tried to hunt down old medical papers to find patient studies... none in that age range. Pre-internet and lots of things changed by then. Oddly I did find that they did the bilateral adrenalectomy for treatments involving aggressive breast cancer and prostate cancer (as adrenals are a source of dhea which is a precursor hormone to both estrogen and testosterone) in that time period. Her file does not appear to show any other disease process...

I also searched for centers (currently pituitary centers) where you would have doctors or surgeons skilled in the surgery and bah, due to age... will keep looking. They may not have used specialists at the time as open surgery is not as technically difficult as laparoscopic. It is not a common surgery, you would have thought LE could have tracked her medical records... I had to travel to get mine, which is quite common. I will see if the people who had it in the 70’s traveled.

Still hunting papers.
I found this:
The Continued Importance of Adrenalectomy in the Treatment of Cushing's Disease
so this tells me that in 1979 they were doing full open surgeries, medications were used in some cases, and it was before they did much on the pituitary as yet. I still think she had to go to a specialist center. I found that San Francisco was a pioneer in bilateral adrenalectomies (again for breast and prostate cancer at first) https://zsfgsurgery.ucsf.edu/media/234872/history of sfgh.pdf and oddly 80 runs through Elko county and straight to San Francisco.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
When her file converted to namUs, the detail dropped out sadly and they say all body parts are intact!:(

Yes, you are right about the NamUs file content....did you check the thread?...this info must have come from somewhere?

Also, I still couldn't find a missing person where the kind of diseases you mentioned was actually in the missing file.... Maybe she has falling between the cracks...A lot of times, especially in those days, taking a mp file for a runaway was denied. If a file was ever made, her needing medication, would have mentioned if a file, IMO....Maybe she was estranged from her family or married and wasn't reported missing by the perpetrator for obvious reasons. All kinds of thought running through my head...

The information comes from previous posts here, and my own information having no adrenals and helping people with no adrenals... it is not a common operation. Her age kinda of (but does not completely) rule out breast cancer, so the most likely reason for a bilateral adrenalectomy is Cushing’s.
A person without adrenals needs a lot of health monitoring, and daily meds. I have lost a lot of friends, and I have almost died myself (ironically in a hospital due to incompetence of a doctor who could not wrap his head around the fact that no adrenals = adrenal crisis in all cases when sick so he let me almost die). I don’t know why no one listed her as missing as she certainly qualifies as missing endangered but this was the 70’s and I don’t know if that was a a type of missing then. It is only guessing, and an avenue for search!

I chatted with one of my contacts and she had her bilateral adrenalectomy in 1978 at 24 years old for Cushing’s. She said it was a really big deal. She spent 10 days in the hospital for testing and then 10 days in the hospital for recovery as they went in via her back and removed some ribs. She did go locally, but she lived in a large metropolitan area, and went to a large hospital.

I am waiting to see if an 80 year old man who had a BLA has had similar information...

It just is not a common surgery... especially back then...

@Panhypopit Thank you very much for all your information about the physical problems if you have no adrenals and operations possibly done on this Jane Doe. Very interesting. I learn every day. Although this information is not mentioned on her Namus file, I have a strong believe that the fact it is mentioned in other files is relevant. What I have been trying to tell you is that if there is nobody reported missing, where this is explicitly mentioned, we are not going to solve this.

Just searching... here is a hitchhiker missing... hair color is wrong, but height, age etc. mention a disease “non life threatening” which I have to say most family do not understand what I have and think I am faking...

Tifanny Felky went missing in November, 6, 1974. This girl/woman was found July 16, 1974. Only when her missing date is off somehow....I don't think she is our Jane Doe.

Yes that was a newb o_O move on the dates, I changed it in the searches. I saw the rule outs, and she only has two, and none that I came up with, so if you think any are viable, I will submit (or someone can).
