This is just horrendous. My heart goes out to the survivors.

My electric hotplate caught fire with a mouse climbing inside of it. It happened while I was renovating and wildlife was getting in.I won't have them in the house now. Luckily it shorted with a bang and woke the dog, who woke me with his barking.

Everyone, make sure you have a smoke detector & carbon monoxide detectors on every floor in your home and that there is one close enough to your bedroom and loud enough to wake you up. Check your batteries on your smoke detectors. Also, have an escape plan so kids know what to do in case of a fire.

This is so sad and so preventable, which makes it all the more tragic.

I would like to point out that most religious Jewish people do not follow this strict customs. And of those that do, there is a wide interpretation of these laws. A few Jewish families that I knew would use a crockpot to keep food heated. Crockpots are made to be kept on for an extended amount of time and are less likely to malfunction.

Here's an article with new footage of the children being placed in their graves. There's not much new information but it stated the mother, Gayle Sassoon, is in an induced coma. Mr. Sassoon will be coming back to be with his daughter, Tziporah, and his wife. The footage is again gut wrenching.

Blessings for this family for strength and guidance and for Gayle to come through

I've not found any updates for the daughter and mother as to medical conditions, or the father. Hope to hear good news soon. Please post if you find anything.

Brooklyn dad who lost 7 kids in fire mourns family at Passover while wife, daughter still hospitalized

"His wife, Gayle, 45, remains in a medically induced coma in Jacobi Medical Center while his daughter, 15-year-old Tziporah, is improving and expected to be released from Staten Island University Hospital North after the weeklong Jewish holiday, the friends said."

"The teen hasn’t been told yet about the tragic fate of her siblings, two sources said. It’s believed her mom doesn’t know the magnitude of the catastrophe either."

Thank you, Blondie. It is good news about Tziporah.

All I can say is........crazy man-made 'rules' in the name of religion. *smh* It's also stated in various news articles that FDNY firefighters set up a table on the street and were passing out pamphlets about fire safety along with smoke detectors and 9 volt batteries - but again due to the Sabbath laws for Orthodox Jews, they're not able to carry anything on the Sabbath so most just passed by the table and took nothing.

I am Jewish and I completely agree with you. MANY Orthodox Jews just hire (or ask) non-Jews to do things for them. I think they are ridiculous, though.

My friend used to be Orthodox (before she figured out she was gay and would be shunned) and she would recite the part of the prayer that says, "Thank you, G-d, for not making me a woman." OMG, that still cracks me up.

If nothing else, this tragedy has been very educational. While I previously realized that both those who practice Judiasm and Seventh-Day Adventists refrain from all forms of work on the Sabbath (such as household chores as well as their jobs), I did not realize that cooking food was considered work. Many people find it a form of relaxation or something enjoyable to do.

Prayers continue for this poor family.

What I don't understand is.......if they are not allowed to use electricity/appliances to cook with on the sabbath, why not just have cold meals that day? Sandwiches, salads, kosher cold cuts, fruit and veggie platters.

That's wonderful news. Thanks for letting us know daisymae.

My thoughts are with Gayle as she embarks on her difficult journey into the future.

I know it is difficult for people to understand what Orthodox Jews observe and why. I can tell you that they observe because these are laws commanded by God. There are books upon books with daily laws that Jews follow. Everything from food preparation to sexual relations. For those who truly observe, God is a part of every second of every day.

...on the Sabbath, observant Jews do not tear toilet paper...they use tissues. They do not carry or push anything, unless it is in a contained area that is allowed (called an eruv). So many more that are fascinating.
