Young boy found home alone in the Bronx, living in despicable conditions

http://abc7ny.com/boy-found-home-alone-in-despicable-conditions-parents-arrested/2994389/

The apartment was full of human feces on the wall, and was infested with rats and roaches. Prosecutors say they also found maggots, and dead and live rodents. One of the children was taken to the hospital with insects crawling on his body. A doctor indicated that one of the children had scabies from lice crawling under the skin

Also from your second link:

[....]

Prosecutors said the parents were not living in poverty but were raising their children in abject squalor.

[....]

The mother told police that they were in school and that she allowed the 5-year-old to stay home because he was sick.

She said she believed he was old enough to care for himself.

So many disgusting parents these days treating children as if they were objects. It is heartbreaking because he is 5 -old enough to retain things like this in his memory- and this experience could cause him long-term mental health and trust issues.

Some people should not be allowed to procreate :gaah:

Ridiculous. I who actually faced poverty when I had my son at 17 even knew better. Sick. No excuses.

I'm interested in the three teens. Wondering if it has always been this way.

The charges seem mighty puny to me.

Another RN/BSN who refuses to give her own children the care she most likely provides others in the hospital. I just do not get it.

And I wonder how clean she was when she provided that care, given where she lived.

I just read the articles again and saw that the mother of this child is a nurse?!? Someone who cares for others as a profession and she had her own child living like this. Sorry for the words but this is just a sick joke :(

I wonder what could have happened to this little boy if the Fed-Ex driver had not alerted the authorities. He could have caught a serious infection and died. And his mother as a nurse would know that.

The New York Post reported the family has had previous contacts with the Administration for Children's Services (ACS), and the father claimed the 5-year-old was “self-sufficient.”

Why am I not surprised ? Our child welfare system is so broken, it is in dire need of reform. It is too overwhelmed, I know this first hand in NYC. But the reform has to occur on a federal and state level all over the country. So many things needs to change. Yesterday.

SO upsetting.

Our ACS (Administration of Children Services, known as DCF in other states) commissioner , Gladys Carrion, stepped down last year in the wake of multiple child fatalities and/or horrific abuse cases where the families had prior ACS contact.

She retired in a tearful resignation. I am not solely blaming her . The broken Child Welfare System is broken on many many levels, stemming from Federal Legislation ASFA
https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-105publ89/pdf/PLAW-105publ89.pdf which passed in 1997 and focuses more on family reunification than prior legislation. Also, front line workers are not as qualified as they used to be and they have horrific case loads, leading to burn out and leading to all sorts of oversights. It used to be that child welfare workers had to be Masters level social workers. Now, child welfare workers can have a bachelors degree in anything. They have unrealistic caseloads and are exposed to horrific things with very little support by ACS and their Foster Care contract agencies.

Its a mess on so many levels and children are failed as a result.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the qualifications vary from state to state. For example, in Oregon, the requirement is a bachelor level or higher in social work, human services or a closely related field.

While in neighboring Idaho, you must be a licensed social worker.

I hope I didn't mess up those links. Anyway, your point stands solid still :)

The children in the photo on Mom’s FB don’t look all that bad to me? But I guess you wouldn’t know until bloodwork, etc is run...

(Quote below is from the link at the bottom of my
Post.)

“The four children were taken to Montefiore Medical Center for evaluation. Three of the children, ages 12, 13 and 15, were at school at the time the 5-year-old was found unattended. According to police, they appeared to be malnourished.”

I'm aware. In NY, where I am from, LMSW and LCSW's are required to be in supervisory positions. Front line workers need a Bachelor's degree and it does not need to be in social work.

I have worked in Foster Care in NYC and I worked as a child advocate (the flip side) watchdogging foster care agencies and ACS on behalf of children removed from homes and placed in their care. I saw ridiculousness occur on a daily basis in both positions. I wrote my professional seminar paper in grad school on the dire need for child welfare reform. Its a very complex and layered subject for sure. There are workers who are GEMS and there are workers who should be nowhere near these families.
