Police: SUNY Potsdam cellist shot to death by non-student

“POTSDAM — A Massena man has been charged with second-degree murder after a SUNY Potsdam cellist was found shot just behind the college's music school Friday afternoon.
State Police charged a 31-year-old Massena man with the killing of Elizabeth Howell, 21, of Patterson, Putnam County. Howell, a member of the Class of 2022, was set to graduate in a few months.

SUNY Potsdam said the man, Michael J. Snow, "has no affiliation with the college, either as a student, employee or graduate."

I’m gonna show this to my buddies see what they think we will take a look at it. Seems interesting

Wonder what the motive might be? The victim is a lovely music education student who doesn't seem like she would seek out the company of a guy like this. Ugh.
Appears random. From Elizabeth Howell killing: Upstate man indicted in Patterson resident's death:
"Authorities suspect Snow fired from his car, which was caught on surveillance video nearby and helped police quickly identify him as the suspect. Howell was believed to be walking back to her apartment from campus. She managed to run off a short distance after being shot before collapsing.

...

The district attorney did reiterate what authorities had said in the days after the killing: that Snow and Howell did not know each other."

According to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Gary Pasqua, the murder trial was expected to start January 23rd, but is now pushed back at the request of both the prosecution and defense, as the pretrial process hasn’t been completed.

There’s no new date set for when the trial could begin.

The judge who was set to preside over the Michael Snow murder trial has recused himself.

St. Lawrence County Court Judge Greg Storie didn’t explain why he withdrew from the case.

Franklin County Court Judge Craig Carriero will take his place.

The trial, which was originally set to begin on January 23, is now expected to get underway in March.

From July 28, 2023: Snow sentenced to 22 years to life, at which time his true motive was also revealed
The sentence for 32-year-old Michael Snow of Massena was handed down in St. Lawrence County Court Friday morning.

“The defendant’s maximum possible sentence will be life and although it will ultimately be the decision of a parole board in approximately two decades from now, I believe the record of this proceeding clearly demonstrates that the defendant should never be granted parole,” said Judge Craig Carriero.

District Attorney Gary Pasqua tells 7 News that Howell was not Snow’s original target. He planned to target former coworkers and a family member, but the plan didn’t work out. He decided to target SUNY Potsdam instead because that’s where one of his original targets works.

“He had set in motion a plan to do that dating back two years prior to this attack. When that plan was thwarted, and he didn’t believe that would be successful, he then changed that to an attack concentrated out of a location and that was SUNY Potsdam,” said Pasqua.
