Gambino crime boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali was assassinated in front of his Staten Island home Wednesday night in a stunning gangland hit that recalled some of the most infamous Mafia killings in city history.

Cali, 53, was gunned down in front of his brick mansion in the lavish Todt Hill neighborhood at about 9:20 p.m. His wife and young children were inside, police sources told The Post.

The gunman sped off in a blue pickup truck after the hit, which one source described as “disrespectful” because it took place near his family home in an outer borough.

Cali is the first mob boss to be slain in New York City since a fresh-faced John Gotti ordered the murder of then-Gambino boss Paul Castellano in 1985 at Sparks steakhouse in Midtown. bbm

“Even Gotti had more respect,” one police source told The Post. “He did it out in Manhattan.”

Cali was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he was declared dead.

This more careful approach to La Cosa Nostra — this thing of ours — has the Mafia looking to bounce back.

There’s no clearer sign of the times than the leadership change in the Gambino family, which was once dominated by John Gotti’s outsized exuberance. The late Gotti’s jailed brother Peter remained in charge till 2015, but they have a new boss in Frank Cali, who according to one law-enforcement source is the exact opposite of the Teflon Don because “no one ever sees him.” bbm

Cali, 53, who lives in Staten Island and has deep ties to Sicilian wiseguys, infused the family with “zips” — hoodlums from the old country — and bulked up its heroin and OxyContin business. But he avoids regular sitdowns with his capos, a tradition John Gotti embraced, preferring to communicate less frequently with a select few of his top people.

Even the recently released Gene Gotti, John’s 71-year-old brother, who spent 29 years in jail for heroin dealing after the feds caught him blabbing on tape, may have trouble challenging Cali’s rule. “He is everything over there,” said a gangster in Italy who was recorded raving about Cali’s standing in New York, the feds said.

ETA: Did Gene Gotti want his seat. He just got out after 29 years in the big house.

Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank 'Franky Boy' Cali Shot Dead Outside His Staten Island Home

Infamous mob boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali has died.

On Wednesday, a little after 9 p.m., Cali — who went by Frank rather than Francesco— was shot multiple times in the torso outside of his Staten Island home, New York Police Department confirms to PEOPLE.

Shortly after, emergency responders arrived on the scene and Cali, who was born in New York City, was transported to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 53.

At this time, police have made no arrests and Cali’s death is under investigation.

Cali, who was known throughout his life as “Franky Boy,” is the nephew-in-law of Sicilian mobster John Gambino and had close ties to the Sicilian Mafia family led by Salvatore Inzerillo. Cali was married to Rosaria Inzerillo.

In 2012, Cali was identified as the new underboss of the Gambino crime family.

Gambino Mob Boss Rubbed Out in Front of NYC Home

Gambino crime family boss Francesco Cali was gunned down in front of his Staten Island home on Wednesday night as he walked outside, according to the New York Police Department, and witnesses told police Cali's killers ran him over in a blue pickup truck to finish the job.

Cali, 53, was shot multiple times in the chest shortly before 9:30 p.m. and then mowed down outside his home on Hilltop Terrace in Todt Hill. He was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital. According to at least one person who called 911, Cali was run over by pick up truck after the shooting, a senior NYPD official told The Daily Beast.

Police are searching for the blue pickup truck that fled from the scene, the official said. No arrests had been made as of Thursday night.

Cali, whose parents were born in Sicily while he himself grew up in Brooklyn, was promoted to acting boss in 2015 after pulling off a “swift promotion” in less than ten years. With deep mob ties in Italy, authorities described him as an ambassador of sorts to Sicilian mobsters.

“In Cali's crew, he has many members and associates who were born in Italy, and Cali is seen as a man of influence and power by organized crime members in Italy,” prosecutors said at a 2008 bail hearing.

Cali became a made member of the Gambino family in the late 1990s and quickly climbed the ranks to become a capo before he hit 40. He was part of a crew headed by Jackie “The Nose” D'Amico, who later became acting boss of the family and promoted him to capo.

His wife is the niece of Gambino capo John Gambino, and his brother Joseph and brother-in-law Peter Inzerillo are well-known Gambino soldiers.

I think the truck running over his body deliberately, after shooting him 6 times first, speaks to the level of anger and violence in this case. Looks like Staten Island is going to be on high alert until the G’s get retribution.

Hhhhhmmmmmm....nice link. I think this was intended for European markets. moo
When I read the news this morning about the mob hit on Staten Island, the first thing I thought about was this recent drug bust in NJ. I have no idea how they are connected (not my expertise!) but doesn't look like the timing of the hit was a coincidence.

I don't know if it was anger as much as a sign of disrespect. But, that's based on reading novels in my youth about the mob, lol. I know nuthin'!

Frank Cali, Reputed Gambino Crime Family Boss, Is Killed In N.Y. Attack

Cali lived in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island, on a leafy street near the private Richmond County Country Club golf course — and not far from where Castellano lived in a mansion when he ran the Gambino family. Two miles away, at 110 Longfellow Ave., sits the house that portrayed the Corleone estate in The Godfather.

The Gambino family is one of five Mafia families that have long been seen as running Italian-American organized crime syndicates in New York. The others are the Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese and Lucchese families.

"The assassination of Mr. Cali came on the same day that Joseph Cammarano Jr., the reputed acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, was acquitted at trial," The New York Times reports, "and about a week after Carmine J. Persico, a longtime boss of the Colombo crime family, died in prison at age 85."

Gambino Crime Family: How Control Has Changed Since the 1950s

In the years since, the organization’s power has declined, and apart from a few relatives starring in reality television shows, Gambino bosses have kept a relatively low profile.

But on Wednesday, the family was vaulted into the spotlight after its reputed boss, Francesco Cali, was fatally shot outside in his home on Staten Island.

The killing was striking for how it seemed to connect Mr. Cali, a publicity-shy don, with the ill-fated ends of past Mafia bosses.

To understand how, you’ll need to know the history of the Gambino family.

How did the Gambino family get its name?
Though the crime organization in question had been operating for decades, the Gambino family’s name came from Carlo Gambino, who was the family’s boss from 1957 to his death in 1976.

The five major families who controlled organized crime in New York came to prominent attention because of hearings on Capitol Hill during that time. All five Mafia families were named after their leaders, and those names — the others are Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese and Lucchese — have stuck since.

How are Mafia families structured?
American Mafia families generally have similar structures. At the top is a boss who runs the show. His second-in-command is known as an underboss. He also has a consigliere, a counselor or adviser.

Underneath all of them are capos, or captains, who run crews of soldiers. Soldiers are the lowest formal members of a Mafia family, but they have usually proven themselves and have taken an oath to the organization.

So, what happened to Mr. Gambino?
He died of natural causes at age 74. .....
