SALEM Detectives from the New York Police Department were in Salem on Wednesday as they investigate a 28-year-old missing persons case.
- Police, including two officers from New York City, searched this piece of property on Route 22 in Salem on Wednesday as part of a missing persons case from nearly 30 years ago involving a Queens man.

The officers focused on a piece of property on Route 22 that was owned by an associate of the missing man, Joseph Zarky of Queens. Two officers from the NYPD missing persons squad met with local police and conducted interviews as part of the inquiry.
Zarky, who police said was in his 30s, disappeared in 1987, and no trace of him has been found since.
The New York City officers were looking at a piece of property at 4283 Route 22, next to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office substation.
That property, which is home to an apartment building, has been the site of a number of businesses over the years, including a factory and a gym, Washington County sheriff’s Deputy Bobby Sullivan said.
At one point, it was owned by an “associate” of the missing man, said NYPD Sgt. John Gleason. That associate does not live in the Salem area, and is not considered a suspect or person of interest in the disappearance, Gleason said.
“We just want to get the lay of the land,” Gleason said. “We’re starting from scratch here.”
Detectives expected to conduct interviews in the Salem area, Sullivan said. But as of early Wednesday afternoon, they had not found anything of note related to the Zarky case, Gleason said.
The 1.48-acre property is no longer owned by the person who knew Zarky, Gleason noted. It is owned by nearby Woody Hill Farm, and used for housing farm workers.
Washington County Sheriff Jeff Murphy said his office offered resources, including deputies, police dog Nass and handler Scott Stark, to assist the NYPD.
Washington County sheriff’s officers said a search with dogs was an option, with State Police contacted for possible assistance, but Gleason said a search would not be pursued Tuesday.
Gleason and NYPD Detective Richard Doherty said they expected to return to New York City later Wednesday.
