Missing Since: June 12, 1984 from Lynbrook, New York
Classification: Non-Family Abduction
Date Of Birth: August 22, 1968
Age: 15 years old
Height and Weight: 5'4, 130 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Dark blonde hair, blue eyes. Morrissey has a scar on her forehead. Her ears are pierced. Some agencies give her eye color as brown.
Clothing/Jewelry Description: A pink sleeveless sweatshirt, jeans, white sneakers and a gold chain with a charm.

Details of Disappearance

Morrissey left a female friend's residence at approximately 9:30 to 10:00 p.m. on June 12, 1984 in her hometown of Lynbrook, New York. She was last seen walking west on Earl Avenue and Merrick Road shortly thereafter. She is believed to have been destined for Captain Video, a video parlor half a mile west of Merrick Road, but she never arrived there. Morrissey has never been heard from again. She had a part-time job at a shade and venetian blinds packaging factory at the time she disappeared. She lived with her mother, stepfather, siblings and stepsiblings, and rarely saw her biological father.

Authorities do not believe Morrissey left of her own accord. She had laid out the clothes she was planning to wear for the next day. She never picked up her last paycheck, which was issued the day after she vanished, and she left all of her money and personal belongings behind. She disappeared the day before she was supposed to take an important final exam at summer school. Morrissey had been experimenting with alcohol prior to her disappearance, was associating with older men, and sometimes broke her curfew, but her loved ones say she was no more rebellious than most teenagers.

One of Morrissey's friends, Theresa Fusco, disappeared on November 10, 1984, almost five months after Morrissey. A photograph of Fusco is posted below this case summary. Her body was found three weeks later, on December 5, about five blocks from her home. She had been raped and strangled. On March 26, 1985, several months after Fusco was found, another area teenager, Jacqueline Martarella, 19, disappeared after she left a friend's Oceanside home to go to her workplace at Burger King. Martarella's body was found on April 22 on a golf course.

Police are looking into the possibility that Martarella's, Fusco's, and Morrissey's cases are all related. All three women were Caucasian teenagers who were last seen walking alone in the evening hours. Both Martarella and Fusco were strangled and were found naked, their bodies dumped in open fields. Their clothing was never found.

Three men were convicted of murdering Fusco and served seventeen years in prison for the crime before they released after DNA testing cast doubt on their guilt. One of them was retried and acquitted of all charges; the other two are waiting for either a retrial or a dismissal of the charges. Prior to her disappearance, Morrissey had bragged that she knew one of the defendants in the Fusco case and even had the key to his apartment. Fusco's and Martarella's murders are unsolved, as is Morrissey's disappearance.

Foul play is suspected in Morrisey's case; she is presumed dead by law enforcement and her family. Her case remains unsolved. Authorities are not sure if it has anything to do with the two murdered women.

Nassau County homicide detective John Azzata said Thursday there have been recent postings on a Facebook page dedicated to a Lynbrook roller skating rink. Some posts have recalled the disappearance of Kelly Morrissey.

"We were looking into this case and we learned of some entries on Facebook, the actual page was Hot Skates Facebook page," he said.

Case History
The victim was located on the cliff / beach area below Bluff Road and Site Drive in Dana Point, California.

At 4 in the morning on September 20, 1987, she called a cab from the Hampton Inn in Mission Viejo. She asked the cabby to drive her as far as $18 would take her. He let her out at the intersection of Cove Road and Scenic Drive, where she handed him a $10 bill and eight ones, and walked to the nearest cliff.

No one saw the woman climb the fence near the edge of the cliff and no one saw her jump, but investigators found marks on the side of the cliff where her body hit on the way down to the beach.

She had stacked her belongings neatly at the top of the cliff before she jumped. Among these items were a pack of cigarettes, a soda can and phone numbers that were traced to a nearby hotel. Near the fence, sheriff's deputies found a purse with a name embossed in gold. What looked like an easy case turned to mystery, however, when a trace of the name turned up the owner of the purse, very much alive in San Diego County. The woman was surprised she was contacted, and reported that the purse had been stolen about 10 years earlier by a person unknown.

Near the purse was a California road map, with a marker detailing freeways through San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, down into Orange County. Officials were unsure but thought the woman had been hitchhiking into the county.

She was carrying no identification on her person at the time of her death.

:bump: for Kelly, missing 29 years tomorrow. :(

:bump:

Next week marks 30 years that Kelly has been missing. Snipped from past article:

Morrissey, a freshman at Lynbrook High School, said goodbye to her mother for the last time on the night of Tuesday, June 12, 1984. She walked from her home at 98 Fenimore St. in Lynbrook to a gas station at the corner of Merrick Road and Earle Avenue. She met friends there but soon left, telling them she might visit a video arcade at Merrick and Nieman Avenue, about half a mile away. It should have been a 10-minute walk. She never arrived.

Does anyone know if Robert Turley, convicted killer of a 12-year-old girl from Smithtown (December 11, 1984), was ever considered as a suspect in the disappearance of Theresa Fusco (November 1984) and Kelly Morrissey (June 1984)?

Fusco's case seems to have much elaborate evil tomfoolery about it.

According to the December 7, 1984, NY Daily News, Theresa Fusco's body was "left on the north side of the tracks" and was found "by a group of youngsters walking beside the railway tracks in Lynbrook, between Rocklyn Ave and Park Place". I'm thinking that's quite near the location of the approach signal S176 which the motorman of eastbound train No. 192 ignored, arguably the main cause of the February 17, 1950, Rockville Centre crash (32 dead). My best guesstimate given accounts available on internet is that the signal was just east of the overpass over Denton Ave.

From the door to Hot Skates, I believe one can see the obelisk in Rockville Cemetery dedicated to the dead of the Mexico and Bristol, horrific maritime tragedies many of whose dead are buried around it. Fusco was last seen alive on the ninth anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald breaking apart in the Canadian waters of Lake Superior (immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot). Not long before the sinking of the Fitzgerald, F. Scott Fitzgerald's body, along with that of his wife Zelda, was removed from Rockville Cemetery (in Rockville, Maryland) to his (Catholic) family plot at Old St. Mary's Cemetery, also in Rockville, Maryland. The public reburial service was in fact on November 7, 1975, just three days before the Fitzgerald sank. In 1935, 400 feet from where Fitzgerald came to be buried in Old St. Mary's cemetery, there was a horrific train/school bus collision that killed 14. The crash motivated FDR to push for a federal grade-crossing-removal program that saved many lives. However the Rockville Centre wreck occurred on overlapping gantlet tracks in place as a result of a grade-crossing removal project. From old aerial photographs taken in 1951, it is clear there was some sort of bus depot across the tracks from the location of the Rockville Centre wreck--don't know whether the depot held school buses.

The initial "F" in F. Scott Fitzgerald stands from "Francis", so you've got the middle names of the assassinated Kennedys for an additional weirdness. Conceivably there also might be a reference to the November 10, 1580, beheading of 600 after the Siege of Smerwick, given James FitzMaurice FitzGerald's role in the Second Desmond Rebellion.

Kelly Morrissey's disappearance was just three days before the murder of Reesa Trexler in Salisbury, NC, another case with seeming mummery about it, and so I do think Morrisey's case connected with that of Fusco (and Trexler). Almost as likely is a connection with the March 20, 1983, Christopher Gruhn case in Rockville Centre. The 1988 Christine Diefenbach murder, occurring in Richmond Hill (an even deadlier 1950 LIRR train wreck), I mostly don't think is much related but I don't feel sure.

How did Morrissey brag about knowing one of the defendants in the Fusco case when Fusco disappeared after Morrissey?

How did Morrissey brag about knowing one of the defendants in the Fusco case when Fusco disappeared after Morrissey?
They meant that Kelly was acquainted with the defendant before she disappeared. The defendant in question is Kogut who she dated on and off prior to her presumed abduction.

This case, and the other 84-85 LI murders need so much more attention. I did not know Kelly, but I lived a block away from Kelly in Lynbrook and was the same age.
You are absolutely right they do need attentions. It’s sad it has gone so many years and still Kelly not found. Could have this been the beginning of the LISK murders?
