MISSING PERSONS

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's assistance in locating two missing individuals. DAVID REDMOND JR. and his daughter LARISSA REDMOND were last seen on Friday January 15th, 2021 in the Ogdensburg area. It is believed that the two were snowmobiling. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office or the Ogdensburg Police Department.

“The last contact made was approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Mr. Redmond and his daughter were on a snowmobile together,” said Sean O’Brien, St. Lawrence County undersheriff.

But it wasn’t until Sunday night that the family filed a missing person’s report. A lot could have happened in that time.

Divers search Black Lake for missing father, daughter

Oh no, the article linked above has updated to say that they found their snowmobiling helmets in Black Lake, but no sign of the snowmobile or the missing persons. They've shifted the search to a recovery effort.

Mr. O’Brien said the helmets were found in the Black Lake area near Stone Church Road.

He also said there’s reason to believe the snowmobile is nearby as snowmobile tracks were found leading from the road to the lake’s icy surface. He confirmed that police believe the two attempted to snowmobile onto the lake’s surface, but fell through as the ice wasn’t thick enough.

‘It’s a recovery effort at this point’: Search on to find Ogdensburg father, daughter missing since Friday

This is sad.

Larissa's body has been found, David is still missing.

UPDATE: Girl’s body recovered from Black Lake, father still missing
From your link: (thanks)
“There’s a reason they call it Black Lake,” Mr. O’Brien said.

The largest lake in St. Lawrence County, Black Lake is matted with weeds and has a maximum depth of 40 feet, but is as shallow as 6 feet in some spots, according to the DEC. The search area, Mr. O’Brien said, is about 6 to 8 feet deep between Stone Church Road and Lost Village Road to the north.

The lake stretches about 20 miles and branches off the Oswegatchie River near Spile Bridge Road, just south of the Ogdensburg city limits. In August 2017, two fisherman were recovered from an area of the lake near this week’s search site and at roughly the same depth.

Search on Black Lake halted due to temperatures
January 20, 2021 at 5:09 PM EST - Updated January 20 at 5:59 PM

Emergency crews say the temperatures are too cold, ice keeps forming on the open water, and they’ll now have to wait until thicker ice forms. That’ll allow crews to then go on the ice, cut holes and use sonar to try to find Redmond. “So at the time right now we’ve made the decision to call off the search until we get more solid ice.

UPDATE: Black Lake search off ‘until conditions improve’

The search for Mr. Redmond will continue, he said, “when it can be done safely.” Black Lake’s usual murk, with several feet of weedy growth from the lake floor, is exacerbated by freezing temperatures and sheets of ice extending from the shoreline. The water’s depth in the search area, Mr. O’Brien said, is about 6 to 8 feet deep.

UPDATE: Search for missing father, snowmobile in Black Lake paused until morning
  • Jan 19, 2021 Updated Jan 20, 2021

No recent news (last was three days ago). I'm guessing the ice isn't thick enough to begin recovery efforts again.

I did find it somewhat alarming that one of the SAR team fell through the ice - clearly it wasn't safe enough even for trained teams to be on that lake.

Search briefly resumes on Black Lake for Ogdensburg man, but again called off

Personnel resumed the search briefly Wednesday, but because of thin ice — about four inches in some spots, according to the sheriff’s office — the team did not feel comfortable continuing.

The search will resume, the sheriff’s office said, when thicker ice forms to allow for safe movement on the surface or when the snow and ice melts.

This is so sad. I cannot imagine the heartbreak. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed Rest In Peace. Amen

County Undersheriff Sean P. O’Brien said Mr. Redmond was recovered roughly 3 miles downstream of the January search area, as ice has thawed and the lake’s current has drawn water north toward the Oswegatchie River. Two off-duty state police officers, according to the sheriff’s office, found Mr. Redmond, who was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where an autopsy is scheduled.

During the initial search, O’Brien said no foul play was indicated.
