    • Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Curly brown hair; blue eyes.






Circumstances of Disappearance
On May 23, 1992, Melissa disappeared from her Queens home. The courts had awarded custody to Melissa’s father. Melissa was 16-months old when she disappeared. She is believed to be with her noncustodial mother, Beth Shari Reiter, aka "Beth Shoken". Investigators believe that Melissa may still be in the New York area.

She would now be 32... do they really still think she's in hiding?
No, but her mother probably brainwashed/manipulated her into believing something happened with her father so she has no reason to seek him out

But she cant use her SSN, she can't use her identity. I have a hard time believing that a grown adult woman would continue to stay hidden, furthermore I can't see the possibility of an adult woman living a good life while on the lam.

I know it is possible, it is just hard to wrap my head around...
 
Maybe Melissa's mother Beth managed somehow to create or find new identities for both of them? And they live under the new identities?

However -- did Beth really manage to start a new life without staying in contact with any relatives, friends, etc.? No one ever heard from her again?
