"JOHNSTOWN – A trial has been scheduled for an Oppenheim man accused of killing 21-year-old St. Johnsville woman Michaela MacVilla.

Daniel A. Nellis Sr., 45, of 758 County Highway 108, appeared in Fulton County Court today, where a trial was scheduled for June 3 at the court....

Nellis was indicted by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office in November on four felony charges, second-degree murder, first-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Fulton County Court and remanded to the county jail without bail in November...."

At the time, it certainly did seem that LE had zeroed in on this creep pretty early on. Now we know why. Michaela's family and friends have done a great job of keeping her memory and case in the public domain, as best they can. I admire their strength and look forward to Nellis's trial.

Investigators: Michaela MacVilla murder suspect had scratches on arms

"JOHNSTOWN - The man charged in the September disappearance and murder of Michaela MacVilla had scratches on his arms three days after she was last seen, according to allegations in recently filed court documents.

State investigators Samuel Lizzio and Craig Eggleston met with Nellis at his residence on the morning of Sept. 28 and spotted scratches, according to allegations in a court ruling. The ruling did not describe the alleged scratches further....

Nellis, 45, was indicted in November on one count of second-degree murder, accused of shooting MacVilla, 21, in the head with a handgun. She was last seen alive early on Sept. 25.

Nellis has pleaded not guilty. His trial is set to begin June 3 in Johnstown. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison, if convicted...."

During the search (9/30/18) investigators arrested Nellis on felony weapons counts & possession of marijuana. While State police have said the charges are unrelated to the MacVilla investigation, the investigation into her disappearance resulted in the Nellis charges. Troopers arrested him Sept. 30, two days before her body was found. If convicted of the murder charge, Nellis would face up to 25 years to life in state prison; if convicted of the first-degree weapons possession count, he would face up to 25 years in state prison.
Trial set to start 6/3/19.

"JOHNSTOWN — On day two of the murder trial of Daniel Nellis for the death of a St. Johnsville woman, Michaela MacVilla, the prosecution worked to rule out any other possible suspects who could have been involved.

There were 10 witnesses called to the stand including St. Johnsville Police Officer Kevin Collins, who was on duty when Samantha and Kevin Jump reported MacVilla missing; Chief of Police Diane Callen; Police Officer Stephen Ferraro; Montgomery County sheriff’s dispatcher Donna Dunston; Devin Sargeant, MacVilla’s boyfriend; Leland Mosher, a friend of Devin Sargeant; Angel Maynard, Devin Sargeant’s step-mom; Luke Sargeant, Devin Sargeant’s father; August Shaut, a friend of Devin Sargeant; and state police Investigator Darryl Bazan, who analyzed MacVilla’s cell phone...."
