I wonder why this hasn't been reported in Australia?? Is it only because he's in the States??

Search continues in US for Canberra soldier Paul John McKay

Forest rangers in the US are reportedly continuing to search for a missing Canberra man, 10 days after the Australian Army member was last seen walking alone in New York State.
Captain Paul John McKay, 31, an Afghanistan veteran, was last seen on New Year's Eve after he left a Best Western inn on foot and headed east towards Lake Placid in the rugged north of the state.

I don't know what to think about this. I live in NY.
Adirondacks are a long haul. Winter sports yes.
Very very cold this week-sub zero.

Why did he choose this destination? Why?

snipped> headed east towards Lake Placid in the rugged north of the state.

He obviously had $$ to get there from round the world, if in fact he was headed to Lake Placid, why not take transport?

So I wanted to look at what was happening in Lake Placid.........

Thanks for the Aussie MSM link!

Interesting to note in the Canberra Times link ...

Police Chief Nason said John McKay tracked the IP address of the email to the Best Western, then contacted village police.

I hadn't noticed that before. So Paul didn't tell his father where he was. Most Aussies would know little or nothing about Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. I can't imagine why Paul ended up there.

It is only 2 hours from Canada. Could there be a remote possibility that Paul wanted to disappear (presumed dead)? A bit of symbolism - end one life on 31st Dec - and start a new one on 1st Jan. I don't know ... just a thought.

A little bit of new information:
A member of the Australian military spent the past two days here assisting village police and state forest rangers in an ongoing search for Paul John McKay.
"What we've learned is his unit is on break, so some of the people he works with are also on break, so getting in contact with people is taking a little longer than we would like," Nason said. "There is one person who relayed to his family that he had made mention something about going to Gettysburg, so we've reached out to law-enforcement agencies in that area and the National Parks police."

I'm really hoping that Paul just wanted to quit his life in Australia, not quit life all together, f that makes sense. Maybe he decided to go off the grid and travel around the US & Canada by foot/hitch hiking. I hope he's out there somewhere, staying warm.

Let someone know you're okay, handsome Paul!

FWIW, he doesn't look dressed warm enough to me.

I'm a hiker, upstate, not that far upstate.

I went to Adirondacks in spring to shoot the rapids. IN THE SPRING!!!
we wore underalls + wetsuits. In the deep winter, we would dress much heavier than that. Down, wool hats, gloves, polar garments etc..... :twocents:

You don't dress that way in sub zero weather.

ETA: You just don't dress that way in sub zero Adirondacks in winter. Nope.

You need wool hats, polar clothing, down jackets etc.........
This photo scares me.

We've had sub zero weather here downstate. This is how I dress UNDER my outer garments. I wear wool hat and gloves, NOT a baseball cap. :twocents: I also carry another wool hat and sheepskin gloves in my car in case I break down. I wear polar shirt + 2 polar shirts + down jacket. Silk long johns + very heavy wool socks. :twocents:

ETA2: My car is crappy, so I prepare in case I break down. You never know. last thing I want is to break down in the dark in my rural setting.

I hike, I prepare. Never hike alone, a sprained/broken ankle can happen. My brother is an avid hiker/fisherman. Catskills not Adirondacks.

He got stuck once with hurt ankle. A rude awakening.
Be safe.

This is a great photo of Paul. He looks the same as in a university yearbook photo. In the photo of him at the terminal, and in his missing person photo, he looks somehow more gaunt and hardened. Perhaps an indication of his experiences and condition.

I don't know about OZ, but do you understand sub zero weather?

You can get frostbite in 10 minutes. Baseball hats and shirts don't cut it.

:twocents:

There's really no such thing as sub-zero temps in Australia. We can get down to about -3C in the Winter at night time, but thats about it. Nothing like the climates the northern hemisphere experiences.

BTW, his pack looks very flimsy to me. No polar supplies.
I don't see a polar sleeping bag or tent. :twocents:

Most Aussies would not understand at all ... when I first was in that kind of weather I thought my Aussie winter coat would suffice! :floorlaugh:

(Immediately joined the long underwear, down jacket, wool hat/gloves/socks crowd when I had to go out. Otherwise, sitting on top of a heat vent was my preferred place!)
