Well aren't her limbs and head cut off? I would think homicide right away..
Boat propellers can do bad things, and if she went over the falls that is bad as well. All four limbs plus head would seem to be stretching it, though.

Probably too young for this uid, but just in case..

The state of the torso....?? meaning saw marks or truncated limbs? as opposed to naturally occurring decomposition, presumably at the joints?

Just speculating, but the torso could have also had a stab wound or bullet wound.

Thank you for posting the link:

Niagara Regional Police have ruled out the "vast majority" of missing persons cases they have been reviewing across Canada in relation to their ongoing investigation into a female torso found in the Niagara River near the Rainbow Bridge last week.

NYSP Capt. Steven Nigrelli confirmed during a press conference at NRP headquarters Tuesday they are first looking into missing persons cases in western New York and, if need be, will expand that to all of New York State and other Great Lake states.

He said it's only natural NYSP would be involved, as the investigation surrounds a river that traverses both countries.

But on Tuesday, McCaffery narrowed the victim's age to between 31 and 55. He said the piercing was "closed off," and that she had two caesarian sections.

He said further testing is being done to narrow down the victim's age range, as well as height and weight parameters.

McCaffery said he is not prepared to get into the cause of death, or the state of the torso when it was found. He confirmed, however, the victim was dismembered.

He asks the public to contact any female family members, friends or co-workers they have not heard from lately.

NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. - The family of a missing Niagara Falls, N.Y., woman believes the torso found in the Niagara River last week may belong to Loretta Gates.

Gates' family have submitted DNA samples to New York State Police, who are investigating whether the two cases are linked.

"We are awaiting DNA confirmation," Capt. Steven Nigrelli said Thursday. "We're hoping to have the the results of the DNA analysis today."

He said Gates — a 30-year-old mother of three last seen Aug. 25 — does fit the profile of the victim found in the river Aug. 29.

So incredibly sad....a mother of three young children.

Rest in peace, Loretta.

Gates, 30, was last seen on Aug. 25. when she left her home to go to a convenience store across the street. She hasn’t been heard from since.

According to social media sites, Gates attended Niagara Falls High School and was employed by a Cheektowaga company. She has three children, ages 11, 5 and 4.

On her Facebook page, she recently wrote, “I am getting my life together for my 3 children I love them soso much.” Her last post on her Facebook page was on Aug. 21 and was a link to her MySpace profile.

A day earlier, her page announced that she was “engaged”, but did not indicate to who.

Canadian authorities have classified the discovery of the headless, limbless torso as a homicide. They have said the body was “dismembered” and the loss of her head and limbs was not linked to having been in the rocky waters of the lower Niagara River.

Investigators have searched the area near where the torso was found in an attempt to locate the head and limbs. So far, those searches have been fruitless.

However, there were unconfirmed reports, late Friday, that Niagara Regional Police had recovered a part of an arm and a leg from the whirlpool rapids after they were spotted by a fisherman.

I checked to see if we have a missing thread for Loretta.. but we do not.

I will change the title to the thread to reflect the change in the case.

rest in peace Loretta

Thirty-year-old Loretta Gates went missing on August 25th at 11 p.m. She had been going across the street to a convenience store, and was never seen again. Police know she made it to the store, and disappeared sometime in the early morning hours of August 26th

Late Friday afternoon, Niagara Regional Police pulled a partial arm and a leg from the whirlpool rapids after a fisherman spotted them and called police. Authorities were out seeking more body parts. Each will be sent for DNA analysis to see if it also belong to Gates.

"We assume, high probability. But until you get that scientific match that those parts belong to Loretta Jo Gates, we're not comfortable to say that," Capt. Nigrelli said.

Gates' family has been candid that she had a drug problem in the past, but authorities can't say if that played a role in her death. Police are not disclosing how Gates was murdered, but do say it appears her limbs and head were intentionally severed.

this article was from the 6th but has a few more details:

The Gates family told News 4 that Loretta is a recovering addict and has been clean and on the right path for the last three and a half years. Loretta had been working to get custody of her three children, ages 11, five and four. Thursday would have been her youngest’s first day of kindergarten.

Loretta’s father Art Gates said, “First school year, she would have wanted to be there so bad.”

Gates, who had recently moved in with her mother in an apartment near Niagara Avenue and Main Street, was last seen in the early morning hours of Aug. 26 at the Bridgeway Mart - a small corner store across the street from where she was staying.

She had told family members she was going there, but never returned, police said.

Authorities said they know she visited the store and did leave it early that morning. She was never seen again.

Gates' mother reported her daughter missing to Niagara Falls police on Tuesday.

Family members said Thursday they filed the missing person's report after seeing media reports about the found torso.

"She had just moved in with her mother. She was an adult. [At first], they didn't think it was a big deal [that she hadn't returned]," said Thomson about the delay in the filing of the missing person's report. "Then, the days added up, and they decided to make a report."

much more at link (including that they do not believe this related to the other two female bodies found in the river this summer)
