Two children are recovering in a Connecticut Intensive Care Unit after police officers stopped their father from allegedly trying to drown them at a West Haven beach early Saturday morning, according to investigators.

A West Haven Police Department patrol officer spotted an SUV parked at Dawson Avenue Beach around 2:30 a.m. and heard screaming from the water as the officer inspected the car, according to investigators.

The officer encountered Romney Desronvil, 41, with two children in the water, the police said.

West Haven Police Department

This morning, at approximately 0231 hours, an Officer on patrol in the area of Ocean Ave and Dawson Ave observed a Nissan SUV parked on the beach.

As the Officer approached he heard significant screaming taking place from the water. As he continued towards this commotion it was apparent an adult male and two small children were in the water. As the Officer entered the water the adult male continued to drift further away with the children all while screaming at the responding officers to “stay back.”

It was obvious at this point that the male, later identified as Romney Desronvil (7-31-82) was deliberately drowning his children. Officers immediately entered the water and were nearly 100 yards away from shore at this time. Other Officers on scene joined members of the West Shore Fire Department and entered the water utilizing the West Shore Fire boat.

The initial arriving Officer was able to gain possession of both children and back up officers assisted him in bringing the children to shore. Life saving measures were provided to both children and they were immediately transported in an ambulance to a local hospital.

Members of the New Haven Police Department met the ambulance and W.H.P.D. at the town line to assist in an escort to the hospital allowing for an immediate transport for further medical assistance. Both children remain in the ICU at the hospital.

At this time Romney Desronvil of Queens, New York is in West Haven Police Custody and charges for this heinous act are pending.

It is without a doubt the swift response by our patrol officers saved the lives of these children. The communication and collaborative efforts made by the West Shore Fire Department and eventually the New Haven Police Department allowed for immediate medical aid and also the apprehension of Desronvil.

Our Detective Division have now assumed the investigation and more information will be provided as the investigation proceeds.

Officers and members of the West Shore Fire Department rushed to the scene, and waded nearly 100 yards into the water as Desronvil pulled the children further out, according to police.

At the disturbed dad’s Flushing apartment building on Sunday, shocked residents described Desronvil as a kind and helpful neighbor.

“He’s a family guy,” said a 49-year-old neighbor who declined to be identified. “He’s always taking care of his family.,” describing Desronvil as a “fantastic” father to his small children.

“Everything’s always been peaceful,” the man said. “This is completely out of the blue. Out of character.”

“He’s a nice person,” said Miguel Ruiz, 19. “He just seems very sweet and very kind. He doesn’t seem like the type to do that.”

“[I’m] very surprised,” said Ruiz. “It’s confusing to me because I just can’t believe someone one do that, especially someone like him,” adding: “He doesn’t seem like the type to do that.”

Another neighbor said the dad was “the most quiet and helpful ever,” even doing the neighbor’s laundry after she had a baby.

“I don’t understand,” said the woman. “Whenever he see me, he helped me … He helped me a lot.”
Cop saves two kids after Queens dad tried to drown them at Connecticut beach

The children, who are under 3 years old, are at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in critical condition in the intensive care unit but are improving, the New Haven Register reported.

West Haven Police Chief Joseph Perno told reporters at a press conference that the children’s mother was in New York on Friday night but arrived in New Haven by Saturday afternoon.

Prayers for these littles :(

Glad to see they are improving, but apparently they are not out of the woods yet.
Wondering how their poor mother is dealing with this...
Was the dad on required meds that he failed to take?
This is so sad, but hoping the children will continue to improve.
Children of their ages usually are not able to remember things -- good or bad -- at 3 years old or less. Hoping that will be the way it is for them.
I had a next door neighbor with whom I was close -- our birthdays were within 7 days of each other, and his family was great. He developed manic depression and his personality changed -- he wasn't dangerous, but he did change quite a bit. Back then there were not good meds for him until he became a young adult. Now, with good meds, he is essentially back to the friend I knew. Just a thought...
Just SMH and saying a prayer for all of them.
