Investigation: Major holes in system among the things killers used to get out of prison http://www.timesunion.com/news/article/How-the-system-failed-in-escape-6325929.php?forceWeb=1 … #PrisonBreakNY

From Queenie's link:

Lax checkpoint security, poor supervision of officers, botched investigation into relationship cited by officials

In this case, a longtime DOCCS investigator said, officials should have thoroughly searched the two escapees' cells and belongings during the internal probe into Mitchell's relationship with the inmate. If that was done, he said, they may have discovered correspondence between Mitchell and one of the inmates, or possibly the tools that officials say she provided them more than five weeks ago.

<snip>

Still, the DOCCS investigator said he was told that even after a co-worker filed a complaint several months ago alleging Mitchell was too close to one of the inmates, Mitchell's telephone records were not subpoenaed.

<snip>

There has been no explanation from state officials about why the inmates were not discovered missing until 5:30 a.m. June 6, more than six hours after they were last confirmed to be in their cells. Another DOCCS official said their cells should have been checked at least once an hour to make sure they were there.

"According to the employees manual, you're supposed to see a live, breathing body," the official said. "If you walk by the cell and you don't see the chest or anything moving, there's a problem. This goes back to the leadership, to the lack of supervision."

Sunday's ground search is expanding toward the east side of Trudeau Road. While police haven't reported any sightings so far, officials say there is no reason to believe Richard Matt and David Sweat have left the area.

*queenie editorial............they gone :D

I find it pretty unbelievable that two lifers who painstakingly planned their escape would be hiding out in woods when they know about heat sensing cameras.

For those asking how can she both admit guilt and plead not guilty, that's how it works IMO. The arraignment you plead not guilty so that you get a chance in hell of pleading down the charges. Almost everyone pleads not guilty at arraignment, plenty switch to guilty when trial/court actually comes, AFTER their lawyer meets with the DA and they hopefully (hopefully for the person going to jail I mean) manage to work a deal for lesser charges if one does plead guilty. JMO

Yes, that's how it works. But the issue is the daughter-in-law went to the media proclaiming Tillie "takes responsibility for the actions she is being charged with."

Pleading not guilty and then hoping for a plea bargain is not exactly taking full responsibility IMO.

Family:Joyce Mitchell,accused of helping killers escape from Dannemora,says she takes responsibility for her actions

I have a hard time believing Joyce Mitchell's story and take it with a big lick of salt. I suspect there's some truth to her version of events, but probably a lot of self-serving and face-saving fabrication. And IMO, she looked like she was suppressing smirks at her arraignment. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her. JMO.

Nah, I didn't see supression of smirks. To me she looked mortified and devastated at the realization she was just a little pawn in their game.

I don't believe for one second that she got "a case of the nerves" or had second thoughts because she didn't want to hurt her husband. I think she went to pick them up as planned, and any panic attack she had was when she found she had been duped...that they had been using her for the past month and then took off without her. Knowing you're largely responsible for enabling two murdereres to escape prison and you're not going to be sipping margaritas under the Mexican sun with them like you thought would send anyone to the hospital with a panic attack. JMO

or maybe this was all part of the plan!

I wonder if LE has even used heat sensing equipment. You would think that if they had Matt & Sweat would already have been found if they were still in the area.

I'm beginning to think that LE has put too much faith in what JM told them. If she helped the prisoners escape she would definitely be capable of lying.

If the dynamic duo are in Canada, Mexico, or elsewhere, should we assume they left the prison with significant cash? How about weapons? Did Joyce and/or her husband provide the escapees with guns along with the contraband needed to expedite their departure? If it's known they had cell phones, what else might they have had to make life easier on the outside?

RBBM

After learning from the DA that the plan was for JM to meet them at midnight AND take off with them, I would say her husband is not involved at all. Likely that he even assisted LE with info or poss evidence that solidified his wife's involvement. Hindsight is 20/20.

New ID!

Looks like all "work" would have been completed prior to that evening other than breaking through the manhole cover. Don't know how long that would have taken.

In order to meet JM by midnight, guessing that they left their cells after the 10:30 PM check:

<snip>

Correction officers confirmed the Matt and Sweat were in their cells during the “master count” at 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Foglia said that is a “standing count -- they don’t have to be literally standing, but they must be visibly seen.”

Authorities have said that Matt and Sweat were confirmed to be in their cells around midnight, as well.

Patrols are made every two hours overnight, authorities said.

Prison guards who talked with the Press-Republican said the rule, when checking on inmates, is to confirm seeing “skin or breathing.”

I am praying hard that these killers have not broken into a cabin/home and keeping someone hostage.
They will kill again, no doubt in my mind.
TV news had reported that neither have outdoor survival skills, unless they studied on the computer?
IMOO, they had more help on the outside than just JM.
Did either have girlfriends or family???

Hopefully they're all wearing their poker faces and they really do have leads. They say they're leadless, but they must be investigating tons of other avenues, such as family, friends "prisoner girlfriends," etc. I can't imagine what's going on between the prison, police and government officials. The warden has been silent, AFAIK. Heads must be rolling over this. If they have leads, they wouldn't breathe a word since it would just tip off the escapees. They won't even let the media photograph the command station area. So I hope/think they're just keeping things very close to the vest and investigating multiple angles simultaneously.

My guess is they stood Joyce up, were picked up by someone external and were long gone by 5:30am. I also bet they went their separate ways pretty quickly.

I agree! I bet the FBI is quietly doing a lot of cell phone investigation and tracking as well.

I hope I'm wrong, but it's looking more & more that after the "investigation," Sweat was allowed to return to the Tailor Shop at some point under JM's tutelage.

I don't expect cons to act on the up-and-up (or even others in positions similar to seamstress supervisor), but what I do expect and demand is that administration and higher level employees supervise their employees. IOW, I expect them to actually do what they are being well paid to do.

My thoughts were along those lines of thinking as well. If she had shown up for the manhole pickup , those clowns would have killed her and taken the vehicle I assume for a 7 hour lead. RMatt is a vengeful person and I am sure her family home address would be easy to locate in the phone book/internet which puts them all at risk of his revenge for her bailing out on the plan.

I just heard on CNN<no link> that Tillies been moved 150? miles away.

And why was Tillie allowed to appear in her arraingment and mug shot without prison wear? Special Treatment?:moo:

And the perps are still on the run.

A perfect storm!!!!
I do not agree that they stood her up, I do believe she stood them up and fear got the best of her. I could not understand why if ....she brought in the tools on May 1st it took so long for them to move on the escape. In this article it states that she was separated from her inmate during the investigation....I think that put the brakes on for them, they needed her for that four wheel drive...they were not done using her yet. So, once it was over, he was placed back in her tailor shop and it all went down...that is not to say they were not busy, filing, sawing, hole punching etc while waiting for him to have full access to her once again. Nope they were not done with her.

And I am sickened that they did not put her on Administrative Leave during this IA investigation concerning a relationship with an inmate. She should have been walked out immediately. Investigation, Polygraphs, Cell Searches, Inmate Strip Searches, Shake downs, Mail read of inmates, Phone records, Tapes of interactions viewed...the list goes on...What were they thinking...makes me so mad....IMHO
