Hey Steely.....sad sad day for our community. I ve been watching news coverage here all day. Waiting for 2 pm press conference too. Been reading rumors the house was meth lab?? Hopefully will info from news conference. I just cant get out of my mind police chief and even Count Exec Maggie Brooks emotions at earlier briefing. On Christmas Eve. An Indiegogo site has been set up for the families and is verified. Can link be posted here or is it against rules?

These men went out to save lives-instead they lost theirs. How could anyone do this, on Christmas Eve morn? This sounds like a trap laid for the firefighters...

Not caught up with this thread yet, but yes, they are calling it a trap.

4 volunteer firefighters shot, 2 killed, in apparent 'trap'

Never would it have occured to me to set a fire to lure firemen to shoot and kill them. My prayers go out to their loved ones, family and friends. So much senseless violence this holiday season.

NYS Lt. Governor was Rochester City PD chief before he became Lt. Gov.

William Spengler is the shooter. He died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

There was an exchange of gunfire with the police. He had several different weapons and at least one was probably a shotgun.

Steely, so sorry your community has to deal with this especially now. The last few weeks have altered so many lives in such a tragic way.

Spengler was shooting from a berm near the Lake Road home and this was set up as a trap. Spengler died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

7 homes destroyed by fire. Shooter died from self inflicted gun shot to head. There may be more victims.....the have not been able to search destroyed homes yet. Sister of shooter lived at residence where fire started and she has not been accounted for. Shooter named William Spengler. He was convicted of killing his grandmother in 1980 and spent 17 yrs in prison.

The gunmen took high ground and was shooting behind the berm I've circled.
If you're standing on the road the berm rises about 10-15ft. up. I'm assuming that's where's he was shooting from.

Right now they have no motive. Mental illness is believed to have played a role. Because he's a convicted felon he's not allowed to own guns.

This sucks..... For the families of the victims to know their loved one died by the hands of an already convicted murderer who did less than 20 years. :sigh: :thud:

Now I am curious about the conditions surrounding Spengler's sentencing which was less than life..... anyone find that info yet?

He killed his grandmother in 1980 it sounds like. They said he used a hammer on her. Why he ever got out is beyond me. I think they said he was convicted of second degree manslaughter. His mother died within the last six months.

The chief just said we need to get a handle on guns and mental health.

This is the last press conference for the day.

Wow! My heart goes out to the victims and their families. What a senseless tragedy.

No more information from me now. I had a rough night. :offtobed: I'll let you know more if I hear it.

Spengler served 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother, Rose Spengler, to death with a hammer.

I can't find a link, but another snippet on google (I can't find it within the numerous links) states the beating of his grandmother occured during an argument over something about her basement.

I think in addition to mental illness and guns, we need to know why these mentally ill convicted killers are let out of prison and fall off the radar. I think the public deserves to know the reason he was let out and off the radar.
