Cheerleader Brooke Skylar Richardson's parents say their 'guarded' daughter kept lots of secrets

Sep 29, 2019

"The parents of Brooke Skylar Richardson, the former cheerleader accused of killing a baby she gave birth to in secret and buried in her backyard, have spoken out for the first time since their daughter was acquitted of murder.

'She did what she thought she needed to do. Maybe, outside looking in, that was wrong, but in her mind, she just delivered a stillborn baby,' her father Scott Richardson revealed on a CBS 48 Hours special....

The Richardsons reveal the depths of their 'very guarded' daughter's eating disorders, which helped mask the pregnancy and keep them in the dark for nearly a year as Skylar fell pregnant, gave birth, buried the infant and then didn't say a word for two months following...."

Thank you very much. I have managed to catch it now :)

I wish they had faded away, not gone on talk shows, and let their daughter battle, get treatment and heal without all of us knowing what’s going on. Too bad gag orders could not be in place now.

I totally understand why they did this. They have faced vitriol online and from people in their community. People have been judging their family life and their parenting and they took a chance to defend themselves. Can't really blame them for that.

I wonder how many in the Richardson's town of 5,000 were twisted enough to sit in lawn chairs across from their house, cameras in hand, posting "surveillance" updates on FB? And how many "friends" turned out to be anything but?

I get that the entire Richardson family paid a terrible price for Fornell's political ambitions and for their neighbors' ugly rush to judgement. And, yes, Skylar's parents had a "right" to defend themselves.

But....Kim seemed to be the only one who felt the need to do so. Skylar never spoke. Her brother was invisible (small mercies). And her dad piped up largely about making the mistake of trusting LE.

Kim wanted to declare no, she did NOT know Skylar was pregnant and that she had an innocent reason for insisting Skylar see her OB/GYN to get BC pills. Most of all, Kim seemed most intent upon making everything related to Skylar's ED all about Skylar. And Erin never asked Kim to explain any of her destructive texts to Skylar about laxatives, weight loss, etc.

As for the public candlelight "vigil" orchestrated by Trey's mother. Poor Trey attended, but never said a word. Somehow I bet his have been some of the most fervent prayers going up about being allowed to get on with life.

Did they say that she wasn't allowed to speak for legal reasons? I would have liked to hear from her but I doubt she will be saying anything now. I think she will want to get as far away from this as possible. And yes, I absolutely agree about Trey. There are a lot of adults involved in this situation making this all about themselves...

1st minute of 48 Hours:

Kim: "I don't know when it hit me- that I was a grandmother and I never got any of the benefits of it."

Last minute of the show, Kim standing at the site where Annabelle the stillborn baby was once buried, telling Erin she thinks of her daily, she feels, she feels, she feels.

In between, Kim talking about how difficult it's been for her, for the family, for her, and only when asked directly about how Skylar is doing, a "not well" is offered up, a not well Kim links entirely to Skylar's ED and weight loss and how her clothes no longer fit.

It's true the show said Skylar's attorneys advised her against being interviewed. A lot of criticism about the show before it aired was that Skylar was rushing to cash in. In a non-speaking role? With nary a post-verdict or sentencing comment made by her?

The decision to participate wasn't Skylar's, and it was made a full year before the trial. I think the decision was Kim's, perhaps to set herself up as the actual & long suffering victim should Skylar be found guilty.

Skylar simply played the same role Kim seems to have always demanded of her: a passive scapegoat who Kim loves unconditionally, even though she's caused Kim so much pain.

That's an interesting take and you are probably right. I will watch it again through that lens. I don't think Skylar is cashing in at all. I mean if she wanted to it wouldn't be hard, but I think she just wants to get on with her life. I hope she does that now.

"They also harbor no negative feelings for the Johnsons, whose son Trey was the father of the baby. The families have never met.

“Certainly, if they were to come to us, we would talk to them,” Kim said.

Scott added that he will always keep his promise to the judge that the Johnsons can have access to the gravesite any time."

SMH
Yup -- I'm not impressed. Whether Baby Annabelle stillborn or not, doesn't discount for me that Skylar did not want this child, period.

At age 3, I buried a dead baby bird in the garden inside my little shoe. That's instinct of a 3 year old to desire to protect something tiny, helpless, and precious to you.

Skylar took her infant that grew inside her, stripped of any creature comfort-- of which she had plenty, and shoved her in ground pit suitable for a tulip bulb. Washed her hands and went to the gym to celebrate her "belly is back," and take her boyfriend to a baseball game.

SMH...me too.

“She is adapting to this normal life. If the right man comes along, she will date but she has never talked about marriage,” Kim said.

Fighting the eating disorders are a priority. Recently, they took Skylar to a specialist.

“We have taken her to the hospital and her doctor but it took a long time to get an appointment with a specialist,” Scott said.

I thought she was supposed to be going to inpatient right away.... nope, same old thing.... how many years is this? They will 'guard' her and continue to excuse her actions..... she did NOTHING wrong in her mother's mind. Pitiful. And it still all about them.... UGH.

Wow, I'm sure that's a load off the Johnsons' minds that there's "no negative feelings" towards them for their justifiable grief and anger. Very gracious of Kim to agree to talk to them "if" the Johnsons do the difficult bit and approach them.

Mother will spend life in prison for throwing newborn baby over neighbor’s fence

23-year-old mom admitted she woke up that morning with stomach pains and "the baby just came out."

She threw her suffocated baby over the fence to the neighbors' yard and will spend the rest of her life in prison, no chance of parole. Safe Haven Law available here too.

Since 2000, Colorado has had a Safe Haven Law where a parent can hand over a newborn up to 72 hours old to an employee at a fire station or hospital with no questions asked.

One walks out with no worries in the world, the other is spending life in prison. Amazing what a little money, photos of a tiny blond cheerleader and acting can do. There should NOT be this much of a difference in sentence in these 2 cases. While there are major differences and no proof Annabelle was born alive (I still believe she took a breath) these extremes are just ridiculous.

BBM : we convict people on evidence, not beliefs.

She still buried her in the backyard and told NO ONE. It was because of the decomp that they couldn't prove if she was stillborn. People felt sorry for her on that jury. And the prosecution overcharged. It should have been a different outcome.
