A Lake Erie fishing tournament ended with the event's original winners caught up in a cheating controversy.

On Friday, the Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) fishing tournament in Ohio crowned Chase Cominsky and Jake Runyan winners after weigh-in. But in a video posted to the tournament's Facebook page, one of the contestants appears to question the results on stage before the video cuts off.

The man who cut open the fish can be heard screaming "we got weights in the fish!" and yelling at one of the two alleged cheaters "get outta here!"

The dramatic footage showed an increasingly outraged crowd gathering around the contestants, accusing them of cheating in previous tournaments as well and threatening to call the cops, saying that the two men had essentially stolen thousands of dollars from other competitors.

Just had to point out that the guy running the tournament is named Jason FISHER. That is all.

Yes, call the Fish Police immediately :p. Seriously though why would you cheat like that

Two competitors accused of cheating their way to victory in an Ohio fishing tournament were hit with multiple charges for allegedly stuffing fish with lead weights and fillets last month.

Authorities reeled in anglers Jacob Runyan, 42 and Chase Cominsky, 35, after the pair were suspected of fishy behavior at the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament where they could’ve taken off with almost $30,000 in prize money.

Runyan, of Ohio, and Cominsky, of Pennsylvania, were indicted on charges of cheating, attempted grand theft and possessing criminal tools, all felonies.

Cheating allegations connected to the two began when tournament director Jason Fischer thought their fish were much heavier than what is typical for a walleye that size. A crowd watched as Fischer cut open the walleye and declared there were weights and walleye fillets stuffed inside.

saw this when it first happened. Far be it from me to criticize people for having high stakes in weird hobbies, but it was hilarious watching the crowd just barely not go into mob justice mode.

Runyan and Cominsky were indicted earlier this month on felony charges of cheating, attempted grand theft, possessing criminal tools and misdemeanor charges of unlawfully owning wild animals.

Both were released Wednesday on personal bonds of $2,500.

The first place prize in the tournament totaled around $28,000.

That’s a very large sum of money, and that’s pretty clever! Can’t lie that I didn’t laugh out loud when I read the title…
On the flip side of that coin though they look like, and are, a couple of tool bags that ruined a really grand event for a lot of serious fishers. Shame on them for their selfishness, and I hope they’re never allowed to compete again..

“There had been suspicions about the two in the past, but police didn’t find enough evidence to criminally charge them. This time was different after the Lake Erie Walleye tournament director found weights and fish fillets stuffed inside their catch.”

Fox 8 story

Apparently they were suspected of pulling this off in prior tournaments.

I hope they get what’s coming to them, and I’m glad no one killed them on the spot , but gosh this story gave me a laugh!

I realize they haven't been tried yet, but do they have day jobs?

ETA: this is also a waste of food, because, lead.

43-year-old Jacob Runyan and 36-year-old Chase Cominsky have both been indicted on the following charges:
  • One count of cheating
  • One count of attempted grand theft
  • One count of possessing criminal tools
  • One count of unlawful ownership of wild animals (this pertains to their possession of fish filets on their boat, according to the prosecutor's office)

each pleaded guilty to a felony count of cheating and a misdemeanor animal ownership violation. The boat and trailer they used when they cheated was forfeited. The remaining charges were dismissed.

The pair is due for sentencing on May 11.

Seems a little harsh and over-the -top.
It was only a fishing competition.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Steven Gall suspended a 30-day jail sentence on the misdemeanor charge, in favor of a 10-day jail sentence. That will be followed by 1 1/2 years of probation for the felony cheating charge. If they violate probation, they could face a year in prison.

The judge also ordered each to pay a $2,500 fine, half of which can be suspended if they make a donation to an charitable organization focused on fishing and children.

The boat they used in the tournament, valued at $130,000, was forfeited to the Ohio Division of Wildlife.

Their fishing licenses were also suspended for three years — the longest suspension possible.

any news on if their "unlicensed ownership of wild animals" charges stuck? Because if it did, I owe an apology for having up to several cows in my spaghetti bolognese tonight.
