We armchair detectives cannot solve cases, even when we are absolutely right.

Even if we don't help with an investigation, I've yet to see how we actively impede it. We can theorize till the cows come home, and most likely nothing will result from it... BUT, there is always the tiny chance that SOMETHING we come up with will help LE. That's why I stay so attentive - because that tiny hope is there.

Actually, crowdsourcing as a means to solve crimes seems to be the wave of the future... and if we want to go old school, for that matter, remember the Zodiac killer? Experts couldn't break the code his letters were written in, so the newspaper published it. And a couple of schoolteachers deciphered it. Not experts, not law enforcement, just regular folks putting their minds to work. I believe in that, I really do.

Schoolgirl Shamus, I also want to mention that your site is a fabulous resource! So many details and keeping it straight is a job. Good for you :)

Why thank ya! :) I just made the LJ group to provide a place to post long text documents that we were discussing on the FB group. FB is pretty unwieldy for this kind of discussion, alas.

LE goes public with info when they need help...but what about in cases with no movement at all and still no word from LE? It is difficult to assume they don't need any help when nothing is happening for months or even years, and yet LE is still often reluctant to ask for help from the public. On WS, we often have members very local to the cases and not only do they often help search, but they help in other ways, volunteering time, food, hanging flyers, etc...so there is help to be had from the public and these days, the public includes the internet.

Oh I do agree, why are we even here, lol, we always have the facts and often faster.

I'm just saying they usually don't want us, even to the point of ridicule.

And then there are the really messed up cases... the ones that spin off into war.... and never seem to get solved.

<respectfully snipped>

BTW, the TES spokesperson who answered the inquiry to clarify TM's statement apparently regards ANY discussion as a problem. She did not limit the stricture to those making "unflattering" speculations about "loved ones" but to anyone discussing the case in blogs and social media. (I'm sure people discuss it in the real world too; but they are not mentioned.)

To sum up:

-I understand having a problem with obnoxious people who won't shut up on the searches. (Send them home and ask them not to return.)

-I understand if TES wants to distance itself from any appearance of partaking in or supporting any particular kind of public speculation.

-I do not understand why they're speaking for local law enforcement, who have said not one word to the Considering Everything administrator.

-I do not understand why they'd want to alienate interested, motived, caring people, reduce the number of volunteers (when the refrain has been that they don't have enough), and reduce donations.

ITA. He lost a lot of my respect when he sued Casey A - I thought that sent a real bad message - and now this. If I'm not mistaken, he got a lot of donations of food, money, and volunteer searchers from this board.

Boy, you'd never know there was active searching going on in this case, no activity, news, or posts all day long...what a weird case.

Some might have different thoughts about TES' lawsuit for search costs.

If, before TES staff agreed to search (~early? Aug. 2008), Casey had disclosed publicly or to TES, the same story (true or not) ultimately used in her defense, TES would not have spent one dime searching for Caylee, imo.
From day 1, TES was totally unneeded because -----
---- per defense's open.arg., it was an accident & also insinuated George disposed of/buried remains at end of st. (and IIRC, defense did not suggest a 3rd party placed remains there).
---- per common sense, Casey placed remains there.

Either way, George and/or Casey (and possibly Cindy) knew location of Caylee's remains in mid June 2008,
way before anyone from TES set foot in FL.

The A. family (Big-Mouth-Liars Cindy and/or Casey and/or George) requested help from and sent the org. on a wild goose chase in which TES used a Big Wad of donations from private individuals.

Some donors would think, the A. family hornswoggled TES by the family member(s) committing a civil fraud against the org and
if TES does not sue to recover search costs, they w/not donate to TES in the future.
=========================================================
TWO small ASIDES
1. the above is aside from questions about merits of TES case vs. which one(s) to sue, and feasibility of collecting a judgment, if successful.
2. More O/T re Markham, aside from questions about FL & local LE suing for their seach expenses.

ONE BIG ASIDE
If Tim M h/bn truthful in post-trial interviews I've seen,
---- After ~ TES' early-mid Aug 2008 arrival in FL, Casey's legal counsel JB ordered TES not to communicate with Casey.
--- Indeed, Casey did not provide info about locations to search, directly to TES and did not otherwise cooperate w. TES.

Shudda, wudda, cudda....
Maybe before committing, search orgs sh. request & receive certain info
only from the specific person reporting the missing loved one.

Maybe search org's intake protocols should include a contract,
in which the persons requesting the search agrees to re-pay search costs,
if they make material misrep's re the circumstances.
But maybe habitual liars like Casey w/not hesitate to sign. Who knows.

A shame :maddening:for charitable org's to need to protect selves against people like this.

And now, Back on Topic to missing Katelyn.

MHO from reading and seeing first hard the search leader name calling and putting people down have discouraged people from wanting to help. It almost reminds me of the conduct of family members of the HD case.

I still think they need to take SAR HRD dogs to the locals landfill(s) but what do I know.

I've been lurking on this thread for awhile because it moved so fast I could never get caught up... and now it's slowed to a standstill. So sad! I wish there was some new clue to be discussed.

There was some drama on the KMDCE facebook today, but I tend to think it's mostly unsubstantiated rumors :( Hoping Katelyn is found soon!

Interesting how fast a case like this one falls into the background, when the key parties, supposedly helping in the case, start bickering.

I think a few others have mentioned this, but very much like Hailey Dunn... Makes me sick that you would purposely try to distract from the business of finding your "loved" one.

Not really new news, but hadn't seen it posted. Paige Johnson's mom was out helping on Katelyn's search. Another upsetting "it seems really likely that this one guy did it but we can't prove it" kind of case...

:welcome5:

It is sad. I hate the rumor mill. I just wish some of the people who really know something are talking to LE.

I wish LE would do a press conference and release more information on the case. It seems to be dead in the water until the next search. I think a lot of people are frustrated by Equusearch and TM.

I haven't heard anything about the search locals recently did without EQ.

According to one of the FB pages, the search party was a small one yesterday, but they said they cleared several areas.

Like many other cases, I don't think there are people other than the perp who can really be of much help in this case. They can tell LE about Katelyn's relationship with JC and others, but without any evidence pointing to him or anyone else, I don't see how it can help very much, especially since opinions on the relatioships of others is so subjective.

You're right, Clu. I just hope LE has more evidence than they are telling but I wish they would do a press conference. Not someone else. Give out any information that might help in the case. Nothing that would hurt the case.

I wonder if JC's family or TES either one realize how many people they have offended and turned off from searching for Katelyn. Makes me sick. I can assume why JC's family took this route but TES claims to be a professional organization what are they thinking?
