'SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Saturday marks a painful anniversary in the City of Shaker Heights.
It will be 29 years since 16-year-old Lisa Pruett was murdered behind a mansion. A bright girl bound for the Ivy League, she had been stabbed 21 times on Sept. 14, 1990, and left to die.
A weapon was never found, and the killer was never caught. Still, crime writer James Renner believes it may be the most solvable cold case in Northeast Ohio.'

''The night she died, Pruett had sneaked out and was found within a hundred feet of the home of her boyfriend. Renner said the boyfriend had just been released form a mental hospital and friends named a classmate, Kevin Young, as the suspect.''

'The story went national, Young’s trial was broadcast on Court TV, and he was eventually found not guilty. It would haunt him until his death two years ago.
Renner is convinced the real killer is still alive and that teens from the time may have known it wasn't Young.
“I think it was just a bunch of scared kids that pointed the finger—and then the police followed suit,” he said.'

Another teenager, Kevin Young, the son of a local attorney, was ultimately charged and tried for the crime but found not guilty of all charges.

James Renner, a local crime writer, compiled a mountain of documents, including police and court records.

During the pandemic, with little else to do, Renner says he decided to take a fresh look at the documents to see where they would take him

While there are those in Shaker Heights who, to this day, believe Kevin Young was actually Pruett’s killer, Renner is convinced he is not.

While researching the documents, Renner said he was also drawn to another crime that happened just five years earlier, just doors away from where Pruett was found.

Renner believes Soke never actually killed anyone despite his confessions, but he says his research led him to another person who appeared in police files and actually has a connection to all three murders.

“This one young man is connected to all three murders and he has a very violent history,” said Renner.
