CLEVELAND – Justin A. Christian, the Lorain man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a girl in Cleveland and attempting to take a girl from her Furnace Street home in February, pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Deena Calabrese set his bond at $3 million. Christian’s attorney Thomas Shaughnessy entered the not guilty plea on his behalf during the arraignment. The case was then referred to Judge Nancy Margaret Russo.

A pretrial date has not been set.

Christian was taken into custody Friday in Elyria and transferred to police in Cleveland, where the more serious allegations against him were said to have occurred.

Christian, 29, was indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury Monday on three counts of rape, eight counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated burglary and a single count of tampering with evidence. The charges against Christian include sexual motivation and sexually violent predator specifications that could add years to any prison sentence he receives if he’s convicted.

....

Police and FBI investigators were able to link the two incidents using DNA taken from a stepladder in Elyria with DNA recovered from the Cleveland crime.

The DNA wasn’t a match for anything in the state database, and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine authorized the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct the first familial DNA search in the agency’s history.

That testing led to a link to a relative who was in the system and from there additional testing led police and FBI agents to Christian. Authorities say Christian’s DNA was matched to the ladder and DNA found on the girl.

I watched the Crime Watch Daily episode and was hopeful that the publicity would lead to arrest. It didn't turn out that way but it seems to have caught the eye of family and neighbors enough to give them pause and make them go "hmmmm"
LOCAL NEWS Family, friends express shock at man's arrest

The case appeared on a segment in October of the syndicated television show “Crime Watch Daily.”

Authorities put out surveillance photos of the suspect and the Chevrolet Malibu he was driving at the time of the Cleveland kidnapping as well as a sketch in the hopes of identifying the man.

Jimmy Christian Sr. said when he saw the surveillance footage, he noticed a passing resemblance to his son and the car and even made a comment to Justin Christian that it could be him. He said he didn’t actually think it was his son and never mentioned it again.

LL was too young to use SM and some of the other children were pretty young. But, Christian may have befriended their parents on SM and he viewed pics they had posted of the children? I wonder if he has a family member who is a SM connection to the parents in all of the cases.

Perfectly possible. Or maybe older children in the family innocently post family pics on on SM and peadophiles pick them? I have heard/read that photos of young children on SM are used and abused by others this way.
It's a sick world for some out there and everyone has to be so cautious now about what they post. At least this guy is off the streets.

Lorain police Capt. Roger Watkins said that Christian is a "person of interest" in three attempted abductions near Lorain schools and is a suspect in two other similar incidents on the city's east side.

Christian is being held at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center on $3 million bond. Because he is accused of rape, he was ordered to take an HIV test.

Christian is scheduled for a pretrial before Common Pleas Judge Nancy Margaret Russo at noon Dec. 13, according to court documents

CLEVELAND >> A Cleveland-area man was sentenced Thursday to 35 years in prison for breaking into two homes last year and kidnapping and raping a young girl and trying to abduct another girl.

Justin Christian, 30, pleaded guilty to charges including rape, kidnapping and burglary. He declined to say anything before a judge issued a sentence that carries no chance of parole.

Prosecutors said Christian carefully planned the abduction attempts and scouted the homes. They said he went into one home and unlocked several doors and windows the day before he tried to grab a 10-year-old.

That girl fought off the attempted abduction in February 2016 when Christian climbed into her bedroom window in Elyria and tried to pull her outside, authorities said.

He kidnapped a 6-year-old Cleveland girl while she was sleeping at home and held her for about 17 hours at another home before dropping her off at an intersection, police said.

He was seen on surveillance video walking near the Cleveland girl's home several times in the days before he broke into the home and kidnapped her, the FBI said.

Investigators found DNA on a ladder used in the second abduction attempt and were able to make a familial match and link Christian to both cases, prosecutors said.

It was the first time the process had been used in Ohio.

Investigators matched DNA from the abduction to the same gene pool of Christian's deceased brother, said Matthew Meyer, an assistant prosecutor in Cuyahoga County.

Christian's attorney didn't return a message seeking comment.

Thanks for the update. I hope this guy stays in jail for a long time. You just get the feeling he was close to escalating his crimes to murder. He's definitely a danger to the public.
