I see that the press conference with Marion County Sheriff doesn't show up in the article unless you view from an actual computer, at least in my case. I've been reading different stories of what was said about the case that are conflicting each other, and I wasn't able to watch the video til just now. Here is my rough transcript with the actual facts that were mentioned by the sheriff.

March 10, 2007 skeletal remains found

Last week SG told Ashland PD he killed female in Marion County

SG had lived in a residential area called Grandview Estates, which was "probably" just less than a mile from remains

Marion County investigators went down and talked to SG at the Ashland PD

He said a young white female about 26 yo was selling magazines or some type of literature in Marion County

She had sold some of these magazines to his mother and did not deliver them. His mother was upset because she did not get the magazines, so a few months later, Grate saw this same young woman, he got her into his car by telling her he wanted to buy some magazines

He took her to a residence south of the city of Marion where he took her into the house, he stabbed her, then he hid her in the basement for 2 days

Then he took the body out to Victory Rd where he dumped the body

"Sometime maybe a year or so later", he went out there, he was concerned about any DNA that might have been at the scene, so he set the body on fire

At this point in time, we do not know who this young lady is.

I was hoping that we might find some info over the weekend by talking to his mother and friends to find out.....that would lead us to her identity, but that has not happened, so we're asking for help from the public

He thinks her name was Diane or Dana. Started with a D. Does not remember her last name.

And if you've seen the image we put out in 2007, he said that does not look like her.

He believes she is from Ohio, but he can't tell us any more than that.

The info that he's given us, I think is credible. It matches up with what we saw at the scene. We think he was involved in this.

His demeanor was very polite and very nice. Went up and shook hands with the investigator

Told "her" that he wanted to get this off his chest and then just sat down and then started providing details

We found her in 2007. He may have killed her as early as 2003, 2004, or 2005

He's telling us that this is the first woman that he killed.

It's hard to believe that there aren't others out there.

She is not from Marion County. She was not reported missing in Marion County. We've searched all the databases, and we can't find anything in Ohio that would lead us to her identification.

Reporter question: What did he know that the public would not have known about the body?
Answer: He went back and he burnt the body, which scorched the leaves and the trees. It looked like they had been burnt. The mere fact that this is the first body we found without identifying feature, such as clothes or id. This one was nothing, just remains were found.

Reporter question: Did you guys know SG?
Answer: Oh yes. We've come across him, we've arrested him, sent him to CRC. He has a history here in the county.

It's my surmise that if you start killing in 2003 or 2004 and you kill in 2016, it's my experience that there's gotta be something in between there that I would be looking for some more dead bodies

Reporter question: His mother did not know he had killed her in the basement where they lived?
Answer: At that point she did not live there. This house changed ownership in that timeframe. I think he was remodeling the house at that point. She actually lived on Windsor Street in Marion, not at that residence. He lived there alone, yes. I think the ownership transferred from her to him, and he was remodeling the house.

The FBI is going to interview some Marion County investigators and do a profile on him. That would be a starting point in trying to figure out if there are others out there.

I would call him a serial killer.

I think he showed some remorse, yes. Umm, I think he's found God and wants to move forward.

Location of body northeast of Marion on Victory Road, off the road in a wooded area.

People smelled the odor of the body and thought a deer carcass had been dumped.

There was a man actually walking through the woods. He was looking for cans. He found the body and reported it to us.

I had short conversation with prosecutor. Nothing has been promised.

I was trying to ID body and beat you guys to the punch.

He has been cooperating with us. The case is not closed.

No charges have been filed. There is no rush. We want to find id of the victim, notify the family, and go from there.

He saw her on South Prospect in Marion

They were getting ready to lock him up, and they said is there anything else you wanna tell us, and he said yes, I killed a girl in Marion

He pinpointed the location on the map and went right to it.

Our primary concern is finding the ID of this woman.

Mother, sister, and a gf have been interviewed.

He told his gf back then that this happened, and she didn't believe him.

Sorry if this has been posted already.

This article includes a video of the press conference this morning with Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey.

http://www.marionstar.com/story/new...onfessed-2005-marion-county-killing/90686756/

"We're surprised that if this girl is missing, why we didn't get a hit," he said, though he raised the possibility that the victim may have been a foreign national from Central or South America.
The publicity did lead to "hundreds" of tips, but none had panned out. The Sheriff's Office had been using an image of the victim provided by a forensic specialist, but Grate said it didn't look like her without giving many further details, according to Bailey.

So where would we look to find missing people from other countries that may have been just traveling or working in the USA?

Thanks for this, AF555. I've copied it over to the UID thread which has been going for years.

Found Monday? I thought the 2015 case was Leicey?

I think the news just worded it poorly. They are talking about Rebekah Leicy, IMO--she was found in March 2015.

About what the Sheriff said today in the press conference. The house where he killed the magazine sales woman...SG was remodeling it after it changed ownership from his mom to him...

Well, I did searches on his known addresses in Marion. There was this on Zillow.com when I pulled up one of those addresses. Those are the only dates listed under sale history of the house. So this could be the timeframe of the murder. 4/22/02-8/08/03 Would make sense with $17,500 profit after a remodel.

Couldn't find his mom's Marion addresses to compare.

It's something imo. If only I knew how to find owner names of the property, that would confirm.

You can look up property in Marion by name or address here: http://propertysearch.co.marion.oh.us/
But I did not have any luck searching for him nor his mother. Maybe she had a different last name back in 2005?
She doesn't currently own any property in Marion, at least not under the name she gave to the press.

Well that busted that theory. Names don't match.

How sad that Candice was never reported missing. RIP Candice.

rsbm. That was upsetting to me as well, especially seeing how her "family" wasted no time in setting up a account for expenses. I pray Candice is in a much kinder place now.

Grate provides Mansfield police with tips in Leicy case

Carroll said at the scene Monday that Grate was "very cooperative in our follow-up investigation."
"He was leading us, he was talking, he was doing a lot of talking," Carroll added.
When asked what authorities are searching for, Carroll said, "A needle in a haystack."
Carroll said Grate formerly worked out of the building, which currently is vacant, and the police official added he thought it used to be some type of recreation center.

Interesting. It looks like it might have apartments or office space above the downstairs storefront. I can't figure out what he means by SG "worked" out of this building when Leicy was killed. Does he mean this was a vacant building SG squatted in or did he have a business of his own there? SG did try to start a business making wooden signs while living on 2nd Street. (pics on his fb and earlier in this thread). His landlord said in an interview he didn't like SG working on his signs in the apt but he was trying to help him with his sign-making business.

How do you plead not guilty after you've led the police to someone's body?
It just makes the prosecutor prove, beyond all reasonable doubt, that he is in fact guilty of murdering those women. I don't think he's admitted to murdering them has he? I'm a bit behind.

Suspect In Ashland Killings Confesses To Another In Marion, Sheriff Says

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that the crime scene where a woman’s skull and bones that were discovered in a ditch along Victory Road in rural Marion County on March 10, 2007 wasn’t far from where the Grate family lived.

The sheriff said that Grate doesn’t remember exactly when the victim was killed, and speculated that it could have been anywhere from 2003 to 2006.

Grate’s mother previously had brought magazines from a door-to-door saleswoman. And when the magazines that his mother had brought were never delivered, Grate became infuriated.

The sheriff said that Grate later saw a girl selling magazines in the neighborhood. Grate lured the girl into his car and took her back to his house. And when Grate tried to get the girl into his bedroom, the girl fought him, and Grate stabbed her to death.

Grate told investigators that he kept the victim’s identification for awhile. Grate recalled that the victim had an Ohio ID card, that her first name started with a “D”, and maybe was Diane or Dana.

In an effort to determine the victim’s identity, Marion County Sheriff detectives searched the city’s door-to door sales license records, but found that records prior to 2007 were purged.

Sheriff detectives also searched the bank records of Grate’s mother when she brought the magazines a decade or so ago from the door-to-door saleswoman, but those bank records are no longer available.

The sheriff also revealed that investigators have DNA and dental impressions to help confirm the victim’s identity when they get a name.
