“These are some of the most horrific crimes I’ve seen in my fifteen years as a criminal prosecutor,” said Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell. “Given these depraved actions and the gruesome evidence, I will be strongly recommending the death penalty if a jury finds this defendant guilty.”

In addition to the charges that are death penalty eligible(one for each of the two murders), the maximum prison sentence that could be given for conviction of all these crimes is 166 years. Ashland County has had only two death penalty eligible murders in the last 20 years, according to the release.

That link also notes that "All 23 counts in the Grate indictment are related to the three Ashland County victims."

So that means he has not yet been charged in the 3 other deaths he has been linked to in neighboring counties.

The Ashland County Grand Jury ha issued a 23-felony-count indictment against Shawn Grate.

The indictment includes two charges of aggravated murder which is punishable either by life in prison or the death penalty.

The charges against Grate are related to the deaths of Elizabeth Griffith and Stacey Stanley and the kidnapping of an unknown woman this month.

Authorities are also investigating Grate for the deaths of three other women.

SG confessed to 2 murders voluntarily, and LE was pretty forthcoming with the info within a day or two.

They're not releasing anything at all about Leicy and her death other than the fact that the case is reopened to see if he had anything to do with her death. This is strange I think. Accidental overdose that he witnessed before getting rid of her body maybe? Are they trying to see if they can prove it wasn't accidental?

There wasn't any heroin in her tox report IIRC. In fact, there was buprenorphine aka Suboxone, which is what people take to detox or to taper off opiates, kind of the way methadone is used. It's newer than methadone and supposedly a bit safer. I have heard of people taking it recreationally sometimes or taking it to avoid going into bad withdrawals when they can't find their drug of choice. It just makes me wonder what her reason for taking it was. Was she trying to get clean or having trouble finding H?

Perhaps they are only seeking to charge him with dumping her body? I think another report said they could tell she was dumped where she was found after death. They knew someone else was involved with at least putting her there. IMO they may have also realized they missed something because SG gave them some detail about how he killed her. Maybe he gave her tainted drugs on purpose or something like that. She had a drug history and was a prostitute. Unfortunately those two facts could have led to LE not looking too deeply into her death.

We know a person who is abusing suboxone. Started out with trying to get off opiates and a crooked doctor who has since been indicted for writing too many scripts. The person was taking it so much, tried rehab but quit after 3 weeks and went back to buying it on the street as well as a legit prescription. It's addictive also. Every symptom fits the person we know.

Another oddity. He says he killed a woman in 2005, who was selling subscriptions/magazines in Marion OH. The body was found but it remains an unknown Jane Doe.. You would think people who lived in that area would remember her,
Also, you would think there would be records somewhere of her subscriptions sales.

The indictments had 2 counts of gross abuse of a corpse, which is a 5th degree felony in Ohio. Regular abuse of a corpse is a misdemeanor. One count for Stacey Stanley and the other for Elizabeth Griffith. I haven't seen any details of what he did, but it could range from dismemberment to necrophilia.

I found an article on Elizabeth Griffith's Memorial Service. I posted the main parts about her over on her thread but thought I should quote part here as well:

Judy Thompson of Ashland said she knew Griffith well.

"I live in the Essex Center and we all go to the Kroc Center, St. Edwards, Garber Brethren and Maple Grove (churches) for the free meals and she was always there," Thompson said. "And so was he (Grate)."

Yes, I remember a warning while following another case back in 2011 or so sayinge women should be aware of men they meet at AA meetings and therapy. Some women were being targeted by men who just wanted their money or if they had any drugs or a roof and their children due to sex addictions etc...These guys like SG are the scum of the earth. How do you tell someone who might be addicted etc...? They were charming, supposedly. Gar and gargh! Yell at them loudly!!! NO!

One would think someone would, yes. Also somewhere hopefully she has family, hard to say where she is from. Is there a link anywhere for her that anyone knows of? I got some spare time on my hands for now, would love to help trying to locate her family.
