Strong Oklahoma Earthquake Felt From Nebraska to Texas

by The Associated Press

PAWNEE, Okla. — One of the largest earthquakes in Oklahoma rattled the Midwest on Saturday from Nebraska to North Texas, and likely will turn new attention to the practice of disposing oil and gas field wastewater deep underground.

The United States Geological Survey said a 5.6 magnitude earthquake happened at 7:02 a.m. CT (8:02 a.m. ET) Saturday in north-central Oklahoma, a key energy-producing region. That matches a November 2011 quake in the same region. No major damage was immediately reported...

Friends in Wichita said house shook like a leaf. (My friends in Edmond [OK] are happy to be on vacation in San Antonio!)

People I know in the Omaha area felt it. I was asleep and felt nothing.

I was setting on my couch at 7:05 am this morning when I and the couch started shaking. I live about 20 miles east of Kansas City, KS. My DH felt it also. It lasted about 1 minute.

Kansas City metro wakes up to an earthquake

I have friends that felt it all the way from north of Waco, TX, Springfield, MO to Bentonville, AR

I was in Miami OK for the 2011 one (unfortunately not in the casino but on the futon at home with my dog). Snippet from the 2016 quake:

The quake was felt in Miami OK.

“I work upstairs at Stables Casino in Miami and my co-workers and I felt it,” Kathy Wyrick said in a Facebook post to the News-Record. “The floor felt like a 300 lb. man was running around in our office. That's the first time I've ever felt one.”

I'm in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and although I personally didn't feel anything, friends and family 50 miles away in all directions did! Weird!!

“A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Oklahoma early Saturday, causing damage and tremors that were felt from Kansas to Texas.

The United States Geological Survey reports that the quake hit just after 7 a.m. in the north-central region around Pawnee, 74 miles from Oklahoma City. The earthquake ties the strongest in Oklahoma’s history. The previous record was set on Nov. 5, 2011, according to the USGS.

Early reports show some damage to buildings, but there were no initial reports of any injuries.”

Record-tying Oklahoma earthquake felt as far away as Arizona

By KEN MILLER, AP

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A record-tying earthquake in the edge of Oklahoma's key energy-producing areas rattled the Midwest from Nebraska to North Texas on Saturday, and likely will bring fresh attention to the practice of disposing oil and gas field wastewater deep underground.

The United States Geological Survey said a 5.6 magnitude earthquake happened at 7:02 a.m. Saturday in north-central Oklahoma, on the fringe of an area where regulators had stepped in to limit wastewater disposal. That temblor matches a November 2011 quake in the same region.

An increase in magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes in Oklahoma has been linked to underground disposal of wastewater from oil and natural gas production...

Yes, this one shook us really hard in Tulsa, OK. We've had a lot of really small ones, but this one has been the largest in magnitude that I've felt. I'm starting to get concerned about my house because of the loud noises it makes every time we have a quake. And before anyone suggests it, yes I can buy an earthquake insurance rider policy but it doesn't cover "man-made" earthquakes, which I guess the insurance companies consider all these quakes to be. And they're probably right.

From the article: “People throughout the state and the region reported feeling the earthquake Saturday morning, with reports to the USGS coming from Dallas, Little Rock, Ark., Kansas City, Mo. and as far north as Lincoln, Neb.”

Or, IMO, as the headline at Huffington Post reads: “What the Frack"

Exactly what DH said this am when he heard the news, "Fracking anyone?" So fracking sad is what is is!

People I know in the Omaha area felt it. I was asleep and felt nothing.

We live there and felt it. We were still in bed and it felt like one of the cats had jumped hard on the bed. I sat up to see what happened then another jolt and right away I got dizzy; had to lie back down a minute until it passed. I was relieved to go on line and find out what happened. I think it was felt as far north as Sioux City.

I got on online too, (twitter) and I was shocked and how many states were feeling it! My son in Dallas had texted me right away, so I knew Texas, but I saw pretty much all the states from there through the midwest had felt it. At that point I started to get mad and just waited to see how long it would take for our Governor Fallon to do something or make a statement. sigh.

Crazy. Kind of sad I slept through it...ha! I've never felt an earthquake before.
