I think it depends on where you live-
but I have told mine to go right ahead and enjoy the state as your parent, and foster care or a group home as your residence. Not one has made that call.

Right. You have to be prepared to tell your child that the consequence to you be damned. If they truly feel like they'll be better off in the hands of the State, then you're willing to accept their choice. I have done that and, to LE's credit, have been completely supported by them. They inform the children of the actually very limited legal obligations of their parents wrt food and shelter, and also wrt legal physical discipline v. illegal. In my experience, though, not many parents are willing to take that stand when the outcome is very uncertain for themselves, personally. Not to mention the strong PC bias against it. jmo

his social media is gone and he snitched. Most likely a lawyer involved.

He's the one who broke down in tears in the courtroom. I think he might be the only one showing remorse and talking to police. I also think his parents were probably quick to get him a lawyer. Just my gut feelings. JMO, OMO, and MOO.

:sigh: I have never heard the term "woods" before. :waitasec:

One of three teens charged in the 'thrill kill' of an Australian college student in Oklahoma last week has previously posted racist tweets on his Twitter account, according to a report.

The Daily Caller reported that the tweets belonged to James Francis Edwards, 15. One tweet from his account reads, "90% of white ppl are nasty. #HATE THEM." Another post read, "Ayeee I knocced out 5 woods since Zimmerman court!:)"

The Daily Caller's report noted that 'woods' is used as a derogatory term for white people.

I haven't heard a lot of terms this 15 year old used on social media. He obviously uses a slang.

Ok we all know I gotta put my input in this case.

First, I've read and caught up and lot of the comments have been a but alarming and some funny. I think most people know about gangs from what they hear in the media and on TV. Which is Hollywood bogus carp. So I'm here to shed some light. I'm a former gang member and have family and friends in and around gangs.

So here we go: I've looked at their SM and from much that I have seen is typical wannabe or never was behavior. Please people don't take the ranting and ravings of 15 and 16 years old serious when it comes to gang affiliation. Practically anyone and I mean anyone can get some buddies together flash a gang sign, wear a blue flag(flag is a bandana) and claim I'm a crip! Real gangs have a hierarchy, older leaders, a block that's theirs. These are wannabes. Has anyone watched the tv show scared straight??? If not I recommend it. You will see a lot of teens claiming this set and that set but its just a bunch of their friends trying to be hard. When faced with real gang members they mostly cry.

Third, there are many kinds of gangs and even with in each set, i.e. crips, there a differences based on region. However crips are not about hatin on white people for the most part. There are crip sets that are all white or Hispanic in some areas. You don't have to be a certain color unlike a lot of Latino or Asian gangs. My ex was a white crip that is in prison. His midnight dreamers gang was a set of crips here in dallas with black, white and Hispanic members that also ran a car club.

Fourth, most real gangstas about dat life don't randomly shoot people cause they bored or white. Real thugs are out making money, running trap houses(trap house is a dope house), pimpin, or on the corner slaggin(selling drugs). Mostly black on black crime over set beefs(someone trying to take over your territory) or someone owing someone money. Most real ones keep a low profile.

Gangs are nothing new. Since the roman days or even before people have roamed in groups doing crimes. Criminal gangs in the old west. Mobsters and bank robbers in the 20s and 30s, biker gangs that started in the 50s and 60s. We aren't the only country that has gangs. Shoot in Japan the yakuza are legendary.

What I wanna know is where were the parents? How did they get the gun? When are we gonna start holdin parents responsible for minors who are out of control? And how in the world can this be a racial hate crime when one of the little psychos was white or biracial??

And finally, yes most of the gang culture is funded by big business. Most suburban white kids love the gangster stuff, but rap music is long left that behind. Most rappers don't make records about killin or selling drugs. Most of it is about what girl I got or how much money I make. Lil Wayne is my favorite or Kendrick Lamar and its mostly about getting high, drunk, chicks and how rich they are. Check the lyrics.

This whole situation is a nightmare, it is an embarrassment to our country! These young people are not mentally ill, they are evil! 100% lack of parenting, the buck stops there, the tweets make this a hate crime and should be treated as such!
My children were disciplined and my grandchildren are disciplined, spare the rod spoil the child! Parents owe their children discipline, our goal as parents is to create self sufficient adults that are productive members of society!
While working for adult probation, I can tell you how 9 out 10 probationer's ended up where they were, and all of it came back to lazy parenting!

This goes far deeper than boredom. Standing up against the lifestyle doesn't make you a racist, it doesn't make you "uncool" and shouldn't care what anyone says.

RSBM

I figured I would chime in here as I dealt with this on a (very) small scale with my son a couple years ago, around age 12 or so.

My son started becoming enamored with the gangster life. I think the music got him into it. He was obsessed with Lil Wayne. Now, my son is a middle-class white kid from a VERY small town, so his opportunities to "be" a gangster were around negative zero. But he liked to listen to the music and watch shows about these rappers. (And I like rap and hip hop. I don't shelter my kids and I don't think I do them any good by banning certain music. They'll just find a way to sneak around and listen behind my back. I'd rather know what they're listening to so I can talk to them about it.)

It took a few months of us saying "that's not appropriate, do you realize what that lifestyle really means?" He was just a naive kid who liked the words but he didn't think about them, didn't think "wow, people actually LIVE this way!" We had many sit-down talks with him about being a good person, what it means to live for God and family and it's okay to like the music - but some of the stories within the songs are not the life we want for you, and not the life you want for yourself. And it's not okay to think this stuff is "cool".

He came around. I knew we didn't have to worry about him becoming some , he was just romanticizing the 'look' of it all, talking a big talk, and this only lasted for a few months. He was a kid learning another lesson in life. And I'm glad he went through that.

The scary thing is thinking about the kids who don't have parents or role models to have these talks with them, to guide them, to explain this is just a song and not a lifestyle to aspire to, to make sure they don't turn down that bad path...

(I'm not necessarily speaking about this case, I'm not attacking or judging the parents here as I know they are considered victims as well, I'm just speaking in general)

I would agree that a lot of it is parenting but we are also born with certain genetic predispositions. I think most cases come down to parenting and lifestyle though. If the kids had people to guide them, they most likely wouldn't end up in these situations.

I think it's important to follow your kids on social media. If I saw pictures of my son with a gun on Instagram or smoking some sticky-icky, let me tell ya what, there would be some heads rolling and that ole boy wouldn't know what hit him. But that's just me. :D

thanks for that hopeful one! I fear that in my case it was genetic. didnt grow up with my parents, but my dad was an OG that spent many years in the pen on various offenses. I didnt know my dad until a few years ago. Im 37 now. But I followed the same path as he did. It's so bizarre. What can I say? It's fun to do bad things! As a kid I was shy and very smart. I was picked on. A gang made me feared. I always wanted to be feared. I joined a ganga and dated many, many thugs, but they were all hispanic or white. I hide everything from my grandmother. But I survivied with no criminal record or pregnancy, lmao!

Sticky-icky?!?! ROLFMAO!

People romance crime. To be honest most gang culture is a rip off of mobster movies. Shoot everyone knows that thugs love Godfather movies and the holy bible of thugdom: SCARFACE. OMG!! that movie is worship and seen by every OG back in day.

As much as I love and appreciate your informative post, what I've respectfully bolded is wrong. Yes they are Crips.

Maybe you didn't see this as it hasn't been posted here yet, but here's their hashtag with pics of their lil gang, lots of money pics, lots of crips tags, exact area they control shown, gun/shotgun, etc...

Btw - it's being forwarded to police as I speak... I'm sure they already have it though.

Very informative, thanks!! It cracks me up you using the lingo and then having to give the definition in parentheses for us old people. Ha!!

Lil Wayne is my favorite too. My newest love is Tyler the Creator. My son introduced me to him and we're going to his concert in September.

Sonya, You are right about the male role model, influence.

Slightly OT but when I moved to a rural redneck area I really noticed how the young males dressed and acted the same as the grown men. You just don't see teens wearing baggy pants or going "goth". The teens are all younger versions of the older men, they dress the same and act the same.

I believe the reason for that is the culture and lifestyle, hunting, fishing, outdoor activities are a major thing here for just about everyone. The young kids start to participate in those activities and clubs with the adults and as such socializing and being mentored by much older males is natural, they stay in those mixed social groups and when they are grown and have their own kids the cycle goes on.

Their relationship with the older males whether it be a dad, grandpa, uncles, etc....is more complex as they are also buddy's that go out regularly and have fun together. The young kids feel compelled to prove themselves and their skills so they are seen as competent and respected by the older males that they socialize with.

It is interesting to see how that effects the youth. Like I said while I am sure the teenagers do engage in teenage type antics amongst themselves but they have strong ideas about how men look and act and they pattern themselves after that even during the "rebellious" years.

Anyone and everyone can throw a gang sign in a pic, put up all the hash tags they want, and take pics of money and guns, but it don't make them an actual gangsta lol.

Seriously! I have so many cousins whose social media pics have all these things (minus the guns, so far as I know) and I can assure you that exactly zero of them are actual gangstas. And I do come from an area that has been heavily gang populated since at least the 70s.

These kids are in Oklahoma - the chances they are part of some larger, actual gang is slim, no matter how many signs and hash tags they use!

Yes! Scarface gets some serious worship especially among the hard young boricua set in my fam lol.

I wanted to pull this quote from burbqueen's post, because it bears repeating:

<modsnip> while gangsta stuff can seem threatening and scary, I hope everyone takes this 'graph to heart, because it is true. Gangs are not out to "kill whitey". Your random is not committing crime based on race. Most gang related crime is due to drug/territory disputes. They certainly aren't going to go around looking to make a splash in the news by killing some random white person.

This is why I often say that I am MUCH more fearful of creepy, white males like RAT (in the Alexis Murphy case) than I am of random gangstas or inner city criminals. Because your random gang is just not out looking to commit crimes against random dudes/women -of any color- who aren't in their crime world.

It doesn't work that way.

Good lord thank you! I have a half brother...wont say his name, tee hee, but he works for fedex. He has pictures of money, shoes, guns(registered, dont tell instagram that!) and his buddies at a parties throwing up blood signs. He works and has 2 kids! He is younger than me,but 28 is too old to be acting like that but anyhoo.

Gangs have a pecking order. A normal 15 or 16 year old in a real crip gang would be working his way up. He would be a look out or a mule. He sure in the heck wouldnt bring heat on his set by posting stuff like that on instagram or FB. He would be talked to. Ive dated guys like this. I would like to see if any of them have a record and whats on it. What part of their city they live in? It seems to me when I looked at their SM it was a bunch of kids. Teens only getting together and telling all their hood rat friends they in a gang then probably going out driving around blasting music and doing petty stuff before they committed murder.

Yes, its sad but most real gangsters are out killing other black people. First 48 is a great show. Good lord, we are killing each other everyday over nothing really nothing. Happens everyday in the hood. There was an elderly man killed in South Dallas a few months back. There were kids 10-13 that beat him to death while he was walking home from the store.
http://dallas.culturemap.com/news/l...beating-death-murder-sam-morris-south-dallas/

No reason for it. Just a senseless crime.

These parents have to know, when you kid walks out the door dressed like a gangster and flying colors, you have to know! I know I did not have to deal with social media when my children were growing up, but we do with grandchildren (2 are 16 years old)!
My kids are racially mixed, and never refer to themselves as one race or the other only as American's!
I would surprise each one of my kids at school on lunch, with a large pizza and a six pack of soda! It was not only to be nice and enjoy my child's company, but it was to meet the kids they did not bring home! My kids always say expect the unexpected from both parents and that is how the raise their children! We were always in the shadow's because the devil is in the details!
To become a pack of dogs, you have to hang out with a pack of dogs! If any of these parents have other children they should be picked up and put in foster care, after all they have proven that they raise murderer's, how could anyone do worse?
