Two men were arrested Tuesday after police said they yelled racial slurs at two black men before bashing their car.
The victims, two black men in their early 30s, told police Jarrod Wade Denton, a white man, and Richard Mendoza, a Latino man, started calling them racial profanities in passing about 2:30 a.m. at a 7-Eleven store, 1628 N Rockwell Ave.
Unsure why they were being targeted, the victims decided to leave the store, but Denton and Mendoza followed them to a stoplight at NW 16 and Rockwell Avenue, according to a police report.
While the two vehicles were stopped at the light, Denton threw a pocket knife at the victims' car, shattering the right rear passenger window, according to the report.
The victims drove back to 7-Eleven to check the damage to their car, and Denton and Mendoza approached them again, according to the report. Mendoza punched one of the men in the face, according to the report.
. . .
The damage was so extensive that the car appeared to have been in an accident, according to the report.
Mendoza told officers he and Denton were at the Well Club, 1502 N Rockwell Ave., when Denton, who is "a little racist," insulted a couple of black men.
. . .
Denton admitted to throwing his pocket knife at the victims' car, and said he makes fun of black people who wear saggy pants, according to the report.
