I was searching through UIDs and I as well noticed that Fred Miller was almost a perfect match. Unless he had a twin roaming around it has to be him.

It began on the evening of Aug. 26, 1972, when a teen stumbled across a skeleton while he was peeling chittum bark in the woods behind Ray’s Food Store in Bandon

“This person had been dead three to five years already,” Andrews said.

When law enforcement ran metal detectors over the scene, they discovered a car key with the emblem “R.” They collected what remains they could, including what Andrews said is the most important piece of evidence.

The skull had a small piece of metal in it next to a hole. In the autopsy, the metal was determined to be a .22 caliber bullet that didn’t penetrate the bone. The hole next to it was the same size.

The skull also held a full set of dentures, which held the strangest piece to the case.

“Both dentures, where you put the glue, had a number,” Andrews said. “The numbers are like a tattoo. They are on a strip of some sort, but it won’t come off.”

Andrews suggested the obvious: “That is a clue that we could easily track down, right? They couldn’t do that back then.”

Then the unidentified white male, estimated to be between 60 and 70 years old and stood at 5-foot, 7-inches, became a cold case.

Howard Frederick Kley

Kley, circa 1966

  • Missing Since: 01/26/1966
  • Missing From: Coos Bay, Oregon
  • Classification: Endangered Missing
  • Age: 53 years old
  • Height and Weight: 5'6 - 5'8, 170 - 180 pounds
  • Clothing/Jewelry Description: A gray suit, a blue and white striped shirt, and a gold watch with an ivory face on his left wrist. The watch is a 25th anniversary watch given to Kley by the Shell Oil Corporation and is engraved with Kley's name, the words "Shell Oil" and the year 1958.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Graying brown hair, blue eyes. Kley has previously broken his left index finger; as a result, that finger is crooked and has a divot in the knuckle. He has a large scar on his left thumb running onto the hand and a black spot on his lower lip. He had skin lesions on his temple and the bridge of his nose, which were burned off prior to his disappearance. Kley smoked cigarettes at the time of his disappearance; he preferred short Chesterfields but sometimes smoked L&M ones.
Details of Disappearance
Kley, a senior engineer for Shell Oil, was on a business trip when he went missing on January 26, 1966. He and two business associates had stopped in Coos Bay, Oregon en route to Seattle, Washington.

Kley and three of his business associates checked into the Dunes Motel on Bayshore Drive, had dinner at the Skyroom Restaurant. When his coworkers were ready to go back to the motel, Kley told them he would be along later. He was last seen talking to several women.

He was supposed to meet his coworkers in the morning so they could drive to Seattle, but he never showed up. His luggage was left behind in his hotel room and the bed hadn't been slept in. His coworkers paid for his hotel room for another day and went to Seattle without him, figuring he would make his way there alone. He has never been heard from again.

At the time of his disappearance, Kley had two grown daughters and lived with his wife in the 1100 block of Upper Happy Valley Road in Lafayette, California. His family stated he had no history of mental illness. His case remains unsolved.

---------------------------

The height, location, age, and postmortem interval are nearly perfect. He went missing from around a half hour from where the UID was located. Also, I have no idea why the UID is wearing glasses in several of his reconstructions, seeing as glasses are never mentioned on NamUS or Doe Network, but for what it's worth, Howard occasionally wore reading glasses.

A problem, though, is that Howard did not have dentures, and the dentures worn by the UID appear to have been made in Seattle in 1966. Howard disappeared in very early 1966, suggesting they were probably made after his disappearance.

Circumstances of Discovery: A citizen discovered the victim's skeletal remains in a wooded area north Bandon off Highway 101.
Two .22 caliber bullets were found in the skull. Additionally, two unspent .22 caliber shells and three coins were found in the area, however, no weapon was found. A possible clue to his identity is the victim's dentures. It is speculated that they were made for a patient in Seattle (S) by the US Public Health Service Hospital (USPHSH) in 1966 (/66). The USPHSH is now closed. The hospital was established to care for service men and families, leading to further speculation that he may have been in the military or Merchant Marines at some point, probably between 1920 and 1930, and possibly serving during WWII.

His wife stated she returned home and discovered Stanton was gone. He left a note saying he would be gone for awhile because he had found "a new job" inspecting "fire damage." There were grass fires in the area of Pompey's Pillar at the time of Stanton's disappearance, and he used to own a ranch in that area, so it's possible he was heading there. He was last seen walking north on Monroe Street, and has never been heard from again. Stanton left all his clothes behind, save the ones he was wearing. His wife reported him missing two days after he was last seen. His case remains unsolved.

The eyeglasses look more like these...

I was just reading the Wikipedia entry for USPHSH and it seems like by 1922 they rolled under the auspice of Veterans Affairs and served all armed forces. Am I reading that wrong? Should we consider that this Doe could have been a member of any of the Armed forces branches?

Also was it confirmed that the S in the serial number was in relation to the hospital? The other USPHSH location still operating on the West Coast in 1966 was also an S - San Francisco. There was also Savannah and Stapleton (Staten Island) on the East Coast.

One of my friends is a prosthodontist and I asked him about the serial code on Doe’s dentures - here’s what he told me:
  • The numbers and S likely have no meaning, the code would’ve been just for identification purposes
  • He wasn’t sure about the 66, he said it could possibly the the year but it’s probably not
