Doesn't exactly sound as if it was "secure."

Yeah, I don't think it was secured. And what about the other weapons?

A small arsenal was found in Jared Padgett's home: two .22-caliber rifles, a Winchester rifle, a shotgun, a .22-caliber revolver, a pellet gun, boxes of ammunition, knives and a sword, the documents show.

Pg 14 of LE pdf file.... am I reading this correctly?

http://koin.com/2014/06/19/search-warrants-unsealed-in-reynolds-high-school-shooting/
Inside the family’s home and at the school, police found some of the following items, according to the warrant:

  • One black and gray backpack
  • One journal inside a bedroom titled “Operation Military kids”
  • One binder
  • Multiple knives under a bunk bed
  • One wallet
  • One revolver
  • One box of ammo
  • One rifle
  • One shotgun
  • A set of earplugs
  • A sword
  • An iPhone
The search warrants do not provide any insight into what may have motivated Padgett. Detectives on Thursday said the case was still open and could not release any additional information.
The other article says the guns and ammo were stored in the closet or under the bed. Why do they keep saying they found no motive?

A search of the home of his father, Michael Padgett, in the 18000 block of Northeast Couch Street in the Rockwood neighborhood on the day of the shooting revealed numerous other firearms — shotguns, rifles, handguns and knives — apparently unsecured, throughout the home.

This revelation is the result of the Thursday morning release of court documents — the "affidavit for search warrant" and the "return of search warrant" — by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.

....In their bedroom, police found “multiple knives” under the bunk bed in the room, and in the closet found several boxes of ammunition, a sword, a Daisy pellet gun and a .22 caliber rifle.

On one of the beds, police found a booklet titled “Operation Military Kids,” a program that helps military families deal with deployment.

In another bedroom, police found in the closet a .22 caliber revolver, a .22 caliber rifle, a .300 Winchester magnum rifle, a shotgun and boxes of ammunition.

Court documents don’t answer key questions: How that rifle had been locked up or how Jared Padgett got to it. Padgett also was found with a semi-automatic handgun, nine magazines capable of carrying hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a knife.

Police didn't seize gun safes or make reference to them in the list of property taken from the home, but Lucas Padgett told investigators that he had several "gun lock boxes" in the house.

Troutdale police didn't immediately return a phone call seeking more detail on how the family secured the guns.

...In addition to the weapons Padgett brought to school, police retrieved five other firearms from closets and under a bed at the family home:

  • A .22-caliber Heritage revolver
  • Two .22-caliber Marlin rifles
  • A Stevens shotgun, model No. 311
  • A Winchester rifle, model No. 700
Police also seized a sword from a closet, a Daisy pellet gun from a closet, an unspecified number of knives from under a bunk bed and an "AR case" from in front of the TV in the living room. Police also found boxes of ammunition on top of a dresser and in the closets of two bedrooms.

It’s unclear whether investigators will make public the contents of a journal found on a bed of the home, drawings seized from under a bed and the contents of an iPhone, hard drives and flash drives also found in the home.

Oh, Lucas had them in the house. Come on, we know all this stuff was not locked up. Are the police trying to cover this up for the family?

Hmmm. Very weird.

Is it possible that the family is trying to cover for the fact he had his brother's weapon? Wouldn't there be regulations regarding military issued weapons? And consequences if those regulations aren't followed? Idk, they clearly had a **** load of guns in the house, which were clearly easily accessible to this kid.

I think they were at least trying to put off any media coverage of it. I have no idea if the gun was military issue.... he is out of the military now I believe and works for either Best Buy or Farmers Insurance per FB (Clackamas) and Linkedin. Per perezhilton :) "three people were killed during a 2012 mall shooting in the Portland area at the Clackamas Town Center. Jared’s family lived close by." A bit weird.

That is odd. Did they catch the shooter? The story rings a bell, but all the shootings are starting to blur into the next.

Wtf these people are nuts with all these guns and weapons. Sorry, you won't convince me otherwise, anyone keeping all this crap is crazy. Just another responsible gun owner!!

And what's with the deputy who helped the family throw away a backpack? Wtf is going on here, and why is so little information being given until now, and no comments from LE??!!

OR - Gunman in hockey mask fires multiple shots at Clackamas Town Center

From wiki

Roberts then ran into a back storage corridor, where he encountered employee Rok Sang Kim, who had returned from recycling boxes and therefore hadn't heard the gunfire. Roberts pointed the rifle at him, but didn't shoot him, instead running down a flight of stairs onto a lower floor. There, he committed suicide

...Jacob Tyler Roberts (March 16, 1990 - December 11, 2012) the perpetrator, lived in the Lents neighborhood in southeast Portland

Maybe it goes along with this logic...

Police revealed this week that Padgett, an active member of a Mormon church, mentioned in a journal that he wanted to kill sinners, but were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

There are hundreds of millions of guns in America, and around 100 million gun owners. 99.99% of guns and gun owners are peaceful.
As a gun owner, I am really insulted when I get blamed for the actions of another person.
The only way to stop these actions is to improve our mental health system.

Sorry, if you are keeping an arsenal in your home, then something is the matter.

Mental health needs to be addressed, but all the mental health help in the world won't stop accidental shootings, kids finding guns and shooting themselves or another child, or someone loosing their temper and using a gun in anger or the heat of passion.

I will maintain that having one gun is an unnecessary risk, but having multiple like this family, the Lanzas, and that kid who was just recently caught planning a columbine event (with father of the year who shows up to the sons court date in an NRA shirt  ), is an indication of serious problems.

He didn't help the family member throw away a back pack. He helped the family member throw something away and, while doing that, the family member saw the backpack in the trash and identified it to the LE who was helping and the detective who wrote the report. Presumably, they left the backpack in the trash b/c they weren't sure whether it was rigged. jmo

Either the reporting, or the off the record remarks from LE are SO strange. They know he wanted to kill "sinners" but yet they don't know a motive? He had all these Facebook likes of hateful, violent things, weapons, talked to many kids about gun use, worshipped the military practically - but he is portrayed as just a normal kid! Wtf? :waitasec:

Ahhhh that makes more sense, thank you! It's worded a little unclearly. But then again I've been up since 4am so could just be me!

I agree with you for the most part, not sure about the statistics, but he wasn't the gun owner either. I think we obviously have some irresponsible gun owners so it is not just a matter of improving mental health. I still say access is a problem, it was in this case and it was with others. Jared had some big old red flags going on! Jared's dad and brother should be held accountable.

I saw somewhere that Oregon does have a law the gun owners could be charged under. The penalties are light (something like a fine and/or 30 days in jail? Going off memory), and it is something like allowing a child access to a firearm.

I would like to start seeing the gun owners in these cases charged for things like this. I also think that the penalties should be far stronger, but at least it would be a start.

I'm tired of hearing about "responsible gun owners" and how they shouldn't be penalized. I'm sure EVERY gun owner considers themself to be responsible, yet still accidents and crimes continue to happen with their guns. I mean, I'm sure Nancy Lanza considered herself a responsible gun owner who kept her firearms locked up and taught her son how to "safely" (oxymoron there) use them. Right up until he used them to kill her and over two dozen little ones with them. :furious:
