I lived in this neighborhood until last year. It’s a quiet, suburban community on the edge of the city, surrounded by schools and farms nearby.
There is plenty of rumour but not sharing that. So far police have stated they do not believe it is “intimate partner” related, but have not ruled out another type of domestic incident.

6 killed on scene, and 1 is under arrest. I also believe there is a 7th injured, but that could be the suspect as well.

The family has been identified as being members of the local Sri Lankan community and articles so far seem to indicate the father survived(but may have been the one injured). I don’t want people assuming he is the suspect as so far there seems to be indications of 2 people remaining after. One who was the suspect and one who was injured.

Press conference in approximately 90 minutes.

The poor babies were 7, 3, 2, and 2.5 months.

Mom, children, and a family friend living with them killed, all with an edged weapon. Father injured but survived. Killer was a 19 year old. No word on motive.

All victims and suspect are from Sri Lanka.

''Police have identified five of the victims as a family of newcomers to Canada from Sri Lanka. They are:
  • 35-year-old Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake.
  • Seven-year-old Inuka Wickramasinghe.
  • Four-year-old daughter Ashwini Wickramasinghe.
  • Two-year-old daughter Rinyana Wickramasinghe.
  • Two-month-old daughter Kelly Wickramasinghe.
Police said Ekanyake's husband was injured and is currently in hospital in stable condition. He's since been identified as Dhanushka Wickramasinghe.

Another man, 40-year-old Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, was also killed.

Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, is charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Police said he is a Sri Lankan national who is believed to be in Canada as a student.

Police said De-Zoysa is also an acquaintance of the family and was living in the home at the time of the killings. He was arrested at the scene about 15 kilometres south of Ottawa's downtown core.''

''OTTAWA - A family slain in a stabbing spree at an Ottawa home late Wednesday threw a birthday party for their alleged killer just days ago, says a religious leader who knew them.''

“They (even) helped him to celebrate,” he told The Canadian Press in an interview. “They organized a celebration of his nineteenth birthday last week, a few days ago.”
''The father told Suneetha that there had been no issues between the family and De-Zoysa before the attack.
De-Zoysa had recently moved into their basement as he pursued his studies in Ottawa. The father had even met the suspect's parents in Sri Lanka.
But De-Zoysa was having problems at school and had become suicidal, Suneetha learned from the father.
Instead of killing himself, he “killed someone else,” Suneetha said.''

Is he related to the family somehow?

He’s from Sri Lanka as well. Wondering if he’s a nephew or something.

“They’ve been nothing but lovely, super quiet, hardworking, really kind people,” Anna Ryt told Global News. “Neighbours help each other out here,”

Ryt said she had never met the accused. “I didn’t know about his existence” until police arrived, she added.

Police said on Thursday De-Soyza has recently come to Canada to study. Algonquin College – a post-secondary institution in Ottawa- confirmed he had been a student there.

According to the college De-Zoysa last attended the school during the 2023 winter semester, which ran from January to April. He was charged by police on Thursday after what the city’s mayor has called it one of the “most shocking” cases of violence in Ottawa’s history.''

From what I’ve read and understood they are not family, simply community based on being Sri Lankan. The father in the family had met the students father in Sri Lanka so he may have been friends with the father or simply met to facilitate.
