As long as they had TV the whole time I expect they'll ultimately be able to join society. I just hope there's a funded program available to them for the years it's going to take.
Even if the parents had television, I very much doubt the children were permitted to watch it. They are described as “lacking basic knowledge“ here: 7 kids found living in "deplorable" conditions, padlock on fridge in Bucks County

My gosh, most of them didn't even know their own birthdays!

This isn't even a homeschooling issue. These children were never enrolled or reported to their school district - it's like they didn't exist. In PA to homeschool you have to turn in a bunch of info to your district twice a year and get a evaluation done by a teacher. These kids weren't even homeschooled on a basic level, and certainly not on a legal level. And it doesn't sound like they ever had medical care, which if they did would have raised a red flag to doctors that they were illiterate and unschooled. It makes me wonder if she had any of the children in a hospital, or gave birth solely at home. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up not having birth certificates or SSNs.

Authorities discovered in the investigation that none of the seven children had attended school and lacked basic knowledge. They also exhibited social anxiety, police say.

Authorities said medical evaluations concluded the children were “clinically underweight and malnourished.”

“Personal hygiene of the children was also found to be concerning, resulting in two of the children having to shave their hair due to severe matting,” according to a news release from the Pennridge Regional Police Department.

Many PA families who are even good homeschoolings families report not sending in any paperwork or reporting anything, and nothing ever happened as a consequence. Even in states where some tiny bit o attempt at regulation exists, there is very little - if any - actual enforcement. That is the issue. Abusers using legal loopholes in the laws to "homeschool" when no actual schooling is even occuring/.

update from October 2023
The judge dismissed the newest charges brought on last week, but previous and new charges brought by the Bucks County Deputy D.A. Monday held up, as the couple is accused of abusing and neglecting their seven children.
[snip]
As for those dismissed assault charges, the D.A.'s Office tells 69 News the Deputy D.A. is in the process of refiling assault-related charges, adding that she will continue to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law to hold those defendants responsible and seek justice for the victims.
Some charges dismissed and others added, as parents accused of abusing 7 children appear in court

The mother and father of seven children, ranging in age from 4 to 16 years old, were sentenced to prison in Pennsylvania on Tuesday and ordered not to contact their kids until they turn 18 and “only with approval of a court-appointed therapist” months after pleading guilty in a trailer house of horrors case, where caged animals were treated better and one creature, an exotic Tegu lizard, was fed salmon on its own TikTok account as all but one of the kids were malnourished, prosecutors say.

Agreed. There definitely needs to be more oversight on "homeschooling". Almost every single child here, killed by parents or abused were "homeschooled". Let that sink in..

The list could go on...so many. And so easy to have saved them by simple intervention, oversight of homeschool.

As a homeschooling parent myself, I couldn't agree more. There is so little oversight. Very easy for children to have no visibility in the community. I've met some other families who absolutely do not educate their children at all, although they are "homeschoolers." It's scary. These kids deserved better but they were failed. MOO
