Details of Disappearance

Tracy's mother's live-in boyfriend, Paul W. Greenwald, dropped her off at Bensalem High School in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania on the morning of March 7, 1983. She was a ninth-grader at the time. She was suspended from school and wasn't allowed to attend classes again until her mother met with the principal, but she had kept this a secret from her family.

After she was dropped off, Tracy tried to get her friends to skip school with her but they would not. She disappeared afterwards and has never been heard from again. She was initially considered to be a runaway. There were several possible sightings of her in the local area after she vanished, but none of them were substantiated and police believe they may have been of a girl who only resembled her.

Tracy had run away from home on one previous occasion, after an argument with her mother. She was only gone for one night, however. Prior to her disappearance, Tracy told a friend she might be pregnant. Authorities don't know if she was in fact pregnant or who the father of the baby could be, although Tracy's friend stated she had dated two boys.

Tracy's mother, Jean Louise Byrd, disappeared seven months after Tracy was last seen. Jean's body was located on October 18, 1983 in Blackbird State Forest in New Castle County, Delaware. She had been strangled. Jean had last been seen 11 days prior in her son's apartment complex in Bensalem Township.

She had stopped seeing Greenwald before her disappearance. They had had a troubled relationship and once, in 1980, Greenwald kidnapped her at knifepoint. In November 1984, Greenwald was charged with first-degree murder in Jean's death. He admitted to the killing and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Greenwald took his own life in his prison cell before he was sentenced in March 1986. He overdosed on some medication. He was never connected with Tracy's disappearance, and it is not known if he was involved.

The runaway theory is now considered an unlikely explanation for Tracy's disappearance; she was close to her mother and her loved ones believe she would have returned home for Jean's funeral if she had been able to.

Greenwald was long considered a suspect in Tracy's disappearance, but investigators no longer believe he was involved. Police have another suspect, a Bucks County, Pennsylvania man, but he has not been publicly named. Tracy's case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected.

38 Years and No Answers: Where is Tracy Byrd?

03-11-2021

March 7, 1983 was the last day anyone saw Tracy Byrd.

Early in the investigation cops believed Tracy, who was only 13 years old at the time, may have been pregnant and left voluntarily, but as days have turned into decades, the mystery around Tracy has only deepened and taken some tragic turns.

Detective McMullin with the Bensalem Police Department in Bucks County, Pennsylvania oversees Tracy’s case and has focused his career on getting justice for victims. During the 1980’s, several young women vanished from Bucks County, which sits right on the border of Philadelphia. McMullin has been able to find answers and justice decades later.

Jeanette Tambe was 22 years old when she disappeared in October of 1984 from a bus stop in Philadelphia. Her remains were identified in 2012 after more than 28 years. Most recently, the identification of Publicker Jane Doe was announced after going unidentified for 36 years as Lisa Todd who went missing from Philadelphia in 1985.

“I’m very happy that we have identified Lisa Todd, I am very happy that we found Jeanette Tambe – their families have some closure,” said Detective McMullin. “But we need to still find Tracy Byrd. She was 13 years old when she went missing…and she’s still missing. She needs to be found.”

According to the missing person’s report filed by Tracy’s mom, Jean Byrd, Tracy was dropped off at Bensalem High School on the morning of March 7, 1983 by her mom’s boyfriend, Paul Greenwald. But Tracy never attended school that day and this was the last reported account of Tracy’s location.

Jean did several interviews with the local news pleading for Tracy to return, but that all came to an abrupt end seven months later. In October of 1983, Jean Byrd also vanished.

Two weeks later, Jean’s remains were discovered in a shallow grave in Delaware’s Blackbird State Forest.

Greenwald, Jean’s boyfriend and the last person to allegedly see Tracy, was arrested and charged with Jean’s murder. He would later commit suicide in March 1986, three years to the month after Tracy went missing.

The search for Tracy has never stopped. Over the years, investigators have reviewed every lead they have received, and they plan to continue to do that until they are able to bring Tracy home.

Detective McMullin isn’t giving up hope. For a family that has endured so much tragedy, he wants to give them answers. “Tracy’s not forgotten,” said McMullin. “If anyone knows anything or has heard anything, as little as it may be or unimportant as they think it may be, we still want to know that information. We want them to call us.”

Source Information

It is possible that Tracy may have initially intended to absent herself from home and school - as evidenced by her not informing her mother of her school suspension, and her attempt to get friends to skip out of school with her.

However, the long absence of a 9th grade girl with no further contact indicates foul play.

Two potential suspects emerged.

One "Greenwald" had been living with Tracy's mother Jean, whom he murdered 7 months after Tracy went missing. He transported her body to Delaware and disposed of it in Blackbird state Forest. On a previous occasion in 1980 he had kidnapped Jean.

Police later announced a different suspect in Tracy's disappearance but declined to identify him.

Generally, when the police refuse to give the identity of a suspect, it is because they are not sure that he is the man they are looking for and in order not to be fools with the public and the family, they remain silent. Because of the girl, perhaps her home was poorly made up of lack of values and education that's why he acted like this trying to get attention...
anyway rest in peace
