We wrote about the case this week in our newsletter: Beth Doe.
Just a snippet from lengthy article..
''In February 2021, the Othram team returned the genealogical profile to NCMEC and DNA Labs International. They identified a top match in a genealogical database with over 1700cM of shared DNA to Beth Doe. Investigative work by the Pennsylvania State Police revealed the very close match to be that of Luis Colon Jr., a nephew to Beth Doe. Luis confirmed that his father’s sister, Evelyn Colon, had not been heard from since the mid-1970s. Incredibly, Luis had uploaded his DNA profile to many genealogical sites hoping to reconnect to Evelyn. This is where a parallel story begins.''

An Arrest Was Made When Evelyn Colon Was Identified After 45 Years
In 1976, 15-year-old Evelyn Colon disappeared after becoming pregnant by her 19-year-old boyfriend, Luis Sierra. The two had left town without warning, and Sierra later wrote to Colon's family, telling them she wanted nothing to do with them.

On December 10, 1976, the remains of an unidentified woman were found in three suitcases under a Pennsylvania bridge. One of the suitcases also contained an unborn fetus. Referred to as "Beth Doe" for decades, the woman's identity was finally confirmed to be Colon's, and Luis Sierra was arrested for homicide on March 31, 2021.

Solomon says the Pennsylvania supreme court decision further clarified the Commonwealth’s “burden of proof”.

“What they said in Talley was, there needs to be a test that they need to look and evaluate–it needs to be substantially more likely than not that they can show or establish the charge. So it’s not about ‘Is Mr. Sierra a danger to the community?’, it’s ‘Can the commonwealth demonstrate that it’s substantially more likely than not that Mr. Sierra committed this crime?’. Now, that’s going to be the standard for all cases.”

Is he still out???

Yes, AFAIK he is still out on bail. And reading through the entire docket, it's a litany of continuances.

On Aug 11, 2022 he/his lawyer filed a "Motion for Continuance and Waiver Of PA.R. Crim.P. 600/1013, i.e. gave up his right to a "speedy trial".

Next action is on Dec 1, 2022 (this coming Thursday) - unless it's continued again.

Anyone know when this is going to come to trial? The wait has been quite lengthy, even factoring in COVID.

In reading through the court docket, it would appear that the defense lawyer, Mr Madden, who's been on the case since May 2001, was granted permission from the Judge to withdraw from the case on May 25, 2023.

Defense lawyer, Mr Fish, came on in March 2023. I'm thinking the two intervening months were used for Mr Madden to bring Mr Fish up to speed on the case. With Madden withdrawing - Fish will now be Sierra's defense attorney.

A motion for continuance was granted on May 30, 2023.

Did you mean May 2021? Or has he been a suspect for that long?

Bumping this thread up.

T hanks Richards....
I knew nothing about this case and story. I"ve now spent hours reading up on this fascinating but ever so sad situation.
It just reminds me of the importance of open minds never giving up..... giving life back to the missing and forgotten.
