SATURDAY SHARE - JEAN TIGHE

Jean Tighe was 38 years old when she went missing on 13 July 2020 from Parede on the Cascais line in Lisbon, Portugal. She was last seen leaving the Help Yourself Hostel and it is understood she planned to meet someone.

Described as 5ft 5in (165 cm) in height and of slim build, with blue eye and mousey brown hair. The Munterconnaught native lived in Glasnevin, Dublin prior to going to Portugal to visit a friend in Carcavelos. When the Covid pandemic forced lockdown restrictions worldwide, Jean stayed in various hostels in the area.

There is great concern for Jean’s welfare exasperated by the length of time that has passed without any communication. Family are pleading for collaboration between Portuguese Police, Interpol and An Garda Síochána to investigate the circumstances into her disappearance.

FIND JEAN TIGHE - Irishwoman missing in Portugal

Jean Tighe vanished in July 2020

The heartbroken family of an Irish woman missing in Portugal have urged the Irish Government to intervene and help them find her.

Jean Tighe, 38, from Co Cavan, vanished in July 2020. She was last seen leaving a hostel in Lisbon.

She had been living in the Portuguese capital for several months and was reported missing by her boyfriend, who has since died.

She told a worker at her hostel she was on the way to meet a male Brazilian friend when she disappeared. She left the hostel carrying her handbag.

A major charity has taken on the case of missing Cavan woman Jean Tighe, with a series of searches now planned in the Portuguese holiday resort she disappeared from in 2020.

Jean was 38 when she vanished without a trace from Parede on July 13, 2020.

Her elder sister Leona, who lives in New York, said the Portuguese police never “thoroughly” investigated her sister’s case, and that gardaí have also been trying to help the family find answers about the circumstances of her mysterious disappearance.

“We have never gotten a thorough investigation into my sister’s disappearance. Jean’s case has now been referred to the judicial police, from the Public Security Police (PSP) in Cascais, the local police who initially investigated,” Leona told the Sunday Independent.

“The judicial police investigate serious crime. I travelled to meet them in March, but got very little information.”

Jean has yet to be added to the Portuguese missing persons list, and the family believe the Portuguese authorities are not taking her disappearance seriously. Cavan TD Brendan Smith has highlighted the issue to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

“We need the Portuguese police to pull out all the stops. We were told they wouldn’t put her on the missing persons list because they were investigating her disappearance and didn’t want to alarm any potential suspects.

''Irish woman Jean Tighe was reported missing in Portugal in 2020
A loved one who has gone missing while abroad can further complicate an already torturous experience for families.
County Cavan woman Leona Tighe's sister Jean was reported missing from a hostel in Parede in Portugal in July 2020.
She had been in Parede between February and May before returning to Ireland. She then went back to Portugal on 7 July and was reported missing six days later.
Her sister Leona said Jean, 38, had booked a flight to Dublin for 15 July but never got on it. There have been no known sightings of her since.
Friends became alarmed on 14 July but it was not until 18 July that a formal report was made to police
"A hostel worker said she saw Jean leave the hostel area on Monday 13 July 2020 with a man," Leona said.
"The hostel worker said the man Jean left the hostel with was Brazilian. How did he know he was Brazilian? Who is this hostel worker? How can he be so sure?
"There's just so many questions that are unanswered."
Lorena said police in Portugal did not contact the family during the early stages of the investigation.''

''She added: "Nobody ever contacted us to tell us they were concerned for the welfare of Jean, that she hadn't returned to the hostel.
"We became very worried about Jean when she didn't write home or didn't start to make her way home."
She said Jean's social media remained active with a logged action as recently as January 2023 but no-one has actually spoken to or seen her since she went missing.
She said her life is "absolutely, completely on hold".
"You have to get up obviously and go to work and work is a great thing, it's a great distraction and you have to keep going," she said.
"But you're always thinking: is there any other way to look at this? Are we looking at it in all the right ways?'"
Leona said there were theories that Jean could have started a new life or become involved in a cult but she also feared the worst could have happened.
"Show me the proof, give me the evidence," she said.''

What a concerning missing-person's case.

- The first post here says she was last seen leaving her hostel and it was believed she was planning to meet someone. Where did this belief come from, and does her family know more about who she was planning to meet or why?

- The 2nd post on this thread quotes an article (Concern for Cavan woman missing from Portugal as family beg Government to help)
that says, "She told a worker at her hostel she was on the way to meet a male Brazilian friend..."
Why would she tell a worker this; what was the context of the conversation?
It also says she was reported missing by her boyfriend.

- The 3rd post quotes an article (‘It’s the not knowing that’s most difficult’ – The mysterious case of Jean Tighe who vanished from a Portuguese resort) that says she was, "reported missing by a male friend..."

- Several articles above say she hasn't been added to the list of people officially missing in Portugal. I find that very tragic. She missed her flight home and left her belongings behind, so it's obvious to me that they should err on the side of caution and add her to the list. It makes no sense to claim that adding her would alarm suspects, IMO.

- The final link above (Missing people: 'Life is put on hold' for Irish families) quotes Jean's sister as saying, "A hostel worker said she saw Jean leave the hostel area on Monday 13 July 2020 with a man...The hostel worker said the man Jean left the hostel with was Brazilian. How did he know he was Brazilian? Who is this hostel worker? How can he be so sure?"

How did this information from an unknown hostel worker came to be known? Why is the worker referred to as "she" and then "he?"
Does this mean more than one hostel employee claimed to see her leave, with differing stories?

So there are a lot of differences in the reporting of the few details that are even "known." But I guess that's not uncommon in missing person's cases.

I still need to listen to the interview with her sisters. Maybe some of my questions will be answered.

My heart goes out to Jean's family. I hope law enforcement will officially add her to the MP list. I hope her case is actually being actively investigated. I hope there will be clear answers soon.

From the article above,

“Concerns were reduced because Jean's Instagram was being updated until February 2021, seven months after her disappearance.”

But no information re: what was being updated on her Instagram. Was she/someone posting something? Did it just look like she was online because someone was using her phone?

bbm - makes no sense, but that's jmo. Is that their usual investigative process... jmo

Jean was last seen leaving Help yourself Hostel, Praca 5 de Outubro 34B, 2775-184 Parede, Lisbon, Portugal on Monday 13th July 2020. It is believed she was planning to meet someone. However, Jean did not return to the hostel that day and has not been seen or heard from since.

We remember Jean Tighe who went missing 3 years ago today on 13 July 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Our thoughts are with Jean's family and friends.

''Jean was last seen leaving Help Yourself Hostels on Monday, July 13, 2020, with her handbag. This fact was established by a private investigator hired by the family, rather than proffered by the police.
She had travelled alone to the area, but had friends locally. With the help of their private investigator, the family believe Jean was planning to meet someone on the day she disappeared.''

''Jean was a seasoned traveller and it was not unusual for her to travel solo all over the world.

Leona said the investigation has been progressing “very, very slowly” since 2020 and that there is a lot more work to be done. She said the family still do not have access to Jean’s personal information.''

“We still don’t know what happened to Jean, we still don’t know where Jean disappeared to, we still don’t have Jean’s bank account records, her social media footprint, her digital footprint.''

“There are a lot of charitable organisations who cover the streets all over the world with their work.

“And when charitiable workers come across someone in distress, the first thing they do is look up these police administrated databases to see is this person genuinely, officially missing and unfortunately, we never had that up until a couple of days ago.”

The hostel worker said the man Jean left the hostel with was Brazilian. How did he know he was Brazilian? Who is this hostel worker? How can he be so sure?"
Probably because he spoke to him when he came to the hostel to meet her.
Brazilian people speak Portuguese too, but would have spoken it with a Brazilian accent, which the Portuguese hostel worker would have recognised.
