''Ms Tighe (38) disappeared from Parede, a Portuguese holiday resort, on July 13, 2020. Despite repeated efforts from Irish authorities, it took three years to add her name to a missing persons database in Portugal.

Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Deputy Smith said the family had sought every possible assistance to locate their beloved daughter and sibling since she went missing.''

“It took an inordinate and totally unacceptable time for the Portuguese police authorities to put Jean's name on the missing persons database. It was clear from early on that modern investigative and search tools were not used in the search. I have called repeatedly for an investigation into Jean's disappearance that is absolutely comprehensive and thorough.”

"The investigation into the disappearance of an Irish woman in Portugal nearly four years ago is at a complete standstill’, according to her family..."

Unfortunately, there is a great deal that is vague and unclear. Despite the frustration of the family, I'm not the least surprised police in Portugal are waiting for more evidence to turn up. IMO, the same would happen in Ireland, if a transitory person staying in hostels wasn't missed by anyone for 6 months, and who was last reported to have gone out with a completely unknown person...potentially Brazillian.

There is mention of a boyfriend who has since died. If he was her boyfriend, why didn't he notice her missing asap?

Also, no mention of how she was earning her living, even living in a hostel in Portugal costs money. Has anyone investigatedd her bank accounts? That info is probably not available to Portuguese police.

The Cavan native who hails from Munterconnaught had reportedly told a worker at the hostel where she was staying that she was going to meet a friend and left with her handbag.

She had booked a flight home from Portugal for July 15, 2020 but never boarded the plane.

“Very understandably, Jean's loving family are distraught and have been at their wits' end over her disappearance. Those concerns are shared by their many friends in the community in Cavan and neighbouring areas,” Deputy Smith said.

“To put it mildly, the investigation into Jean's disappearance has been totally inadequate. It is simply just not good enough.”
